Tenebria: Remnant of Rome
A survival and resource management RPG after the fall of Rome
Tenebria: Remnant of Rome
A survival and resource management RPG after the fall of Rome
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, September 22 2019 1:00 AM UTC +00:00.
Rome, the famous Eternal City, has fallen and the last imperator exiled in obscurity. There are no more supply trains to support the legions. There is no more trade with the coasts. As far as you know, you are the last Romans, stranded a thousand stadia from anywhere. All you have left is your training, your eagle standard and your will to preserve civilization as you know it. Here in Tenebria, at the base of a crumbling aqueduct, you will make your final stand.
Created by writer and artist Steven Wu, the newest from Wet Ink Games is ready to challenge you with a desperate fight for survival at the edge of a fallen empire. Create a survivor at the end of an age, choose what you can contribute to rebuilding, meet your fellow refugees in Tenebria, and take up the fight against the many others who want what you have preserved. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new age...
Disaster. Flavius, my seneschal, led our remaining servants and my eldest son on a hunt to find us some food. They took with them our remaining arms, two bows and an old spear from my grandfather’s time. They didn’t return at nightfall. In the morning, I set out to look for them with my youngest, the two of us gripping dinner knives as if we were wielding swords.
To my relief and shame, we found no trace of them, not even a bloody scrap of cloth. Perhaps Flavius found some better man to call master, one who could at a minimum provide food? But would my son abandon me as well? And if they were set upon by bandits, would there not at least have been some sign of struggle? My mind wandered to dark places, to rumors of pagan hexes and fell sorceries that could shatter the soul.
We returned to my wife and daughter empty-handed and empty-bellied.

Tenebria is powered by a simple and easy-to-learn rules set called +One developed for Wet Ink Games’ previous game. Players roll D6 equal to skill proficiency and may manipulate dice results based on Attributes in an effort to meet or exceed the Target Number of successes required. A success is a 5 or 6 on a die. Each roll can be manipulated a number of times equal to the associated Attribute. Each manipulation, known as a +One, may involve raising or rerolling a die, but can also take the form of adding dice to a roll, or even rolling a skill you may not have. The higher an Attribute is, the more a character can manipulate a roll. But this sword cuts both ways: each Attribute is a marker of your health and can be reduced, meaning your options and proficiency are also reduced as your character takes damage.
Characters can use their Spirit to help their fellow survivors with inspiring morale actions. They will also face hexes from enemies or learn to wield some of their own. Players are able to add a number of augments to these magic abilities, but each addition raises the difficulty. Characters can create illusions or grant true seeing, enrage their enemies or heal wounds. Balancing spiritual exhaustion with the rewards of magical power becomes another aspect of survival.
Players also hold their resources in the form of playing cards. These cards must be sacrificed in order to get the group through missions and may be sacrificed to power rituals or avoid injury. These cards also serve as the experience system of the game, being traded for new skills, additional dice, more inspiration abilities, or even to improve the town of Tenebria itself. Players must balance the goal of personal survival with the goal of group success.
Our goal is to fund a softcover edition, a limited number of Limited Edition hardcover editions, and the custom "Eagle" dice. We’ve planned several stretch goals which will increase page count, add the Fate Deck of custom playing cards, add more art to the book, and add more world information and alternate setting material.

We are very proud of the product Tenebria already is, so the additional material unlocked through these Stretch Goals just gives players more options that aren't required to enjoy the game. Each of the goals unlock more content for the core book or adds physical content to the DELUXE and Gold Eagle Limited Edition pledge levels and allows us to offer more Add-Ons to all pledge levels.
Regarding Deluxe Stretch Goals, these will automatically be included both the DELUXE and Gold Eagle Tier pledge, so the more we unlock, the better value the pledge becomes!

Wet Ink Games believes pen and paper role-playing games should be a collective storytelling experience for the enjoyment of all involved. We are dedicated to creating unique systems and dynamic settings to foster and grow your storytelling potential. The company was created in 2015 by Brandon K. Aten and Matthew Orr who have over a decade of experience in the gaming industry working on projects together and separately for prominent companies including Palladium Books (Rifts and Splicers), Third Eye Games (Part Time Gods, Ninja Crusade 2nd Ed. and Amp: Year One), and NerdBurgerGames (CAPERS).
Our first game, Wild Skies, was released in 2017 and offers diesel-punk adventure in an anthropomorphic version of the 1930s. The first sourcebook, featuring America, was released in 2018. Our second game, Never Going Home, adds horror to the already horrible trenches of the First World War. It was released, along with three sourcebooks, in 2019. Wet Ink Games strives to bring fresh ideas to your tabletop before the ink dries.
As a small, indie game company, we do our own fulfillment, which allows us a certain amount of flexibility. This does lead to high international costs at times, due to customs and the generally high price of shipping. While we do offer international shipping, we can't offer refunds on your pledge because shipping was higher than anticipated. However, we will be fulfilling most international and individual book orders, and all of our digital orders through our partners at DriveThruRPG.
Risks and challenges
Q: Can Wet Ink Games handle this project?
A: This is our fourth campaign, after three previous successful projects. With each one we have learned more about the industry and best practices. The majority of our fulfillment work for our previous project has been completed, so Tenebria will be our focus for the remainder of 2019. We aren’t trying to learn anything new this time, just deliver another great product up to the standards we have set. We feel confident we are in a great position to repeat our success.
Q: How much of the book is already finished?
A: The manuscript and art have already been completed and we will move right to production as soon as we get funding. The text potentially added by stretch goals is not written yet, but turn around on this additional material will not take long and has been built into our schedule.
Q: Will all the art be by just one artist?
A: Steven Wu has already completed over a dozen paintings for the project as well as many line drawings. We may need a few more to represent any additional content, and we expect Steven will be able to complete these additional pieces. If not, we have other artists we can call upon to assist in the work load.
Q: Have you produced all these items before?
A: Our previous project was a deliberate stretch for us to learn more about making dice, cards, and other peripherals for the RPG table. Everything we intend to produce for Tenebria is something we have done before.
Q: What if shipping costs increase?
A: Shipping costs are well beyond our control. We’ve made our best projections and those shipping fees will be collected through Backer Kit. Once that money is in hand, we’ll send the items, even it we end up eating a cost increase.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
