Update #8

We Are In Full Production

We solved most of our problems early last week and we are now in production. So far we have machined out about 1000 pairs of Switchblades. The Galaxy Line Switchblades need to take a trip to the vibration polishing machines before they are ready for assembly and testing. The hardwood Switchblades need final sanding and the oil & wax finish.

We are still on schedule to ship starting on and throughout March. If we start to slip, we will hire on extra help to finish the orders.

The Oil & Wax Finish

We have also finished developing a method of applying the finish quickly in batch format:

  • 20 pairs of hardwood Switchblades are placed in a wire mesh cage
  • The cage is submerged in a heated vat of oil and wax for 30 minutes
  • The cage is removed from the vat and cleaned off with high pressure air
  • The cage is put in an oven for 30 minutes to dry off remaining oil & wax

After the Switchblades cool down, the hardened wax gives the wood a dull shine. The batch processing means we don't have to interact with every single Switchblade individually which was slow, messy, and generated a lot of paper towel waste.

Thanks for the updated. What kind of oil and was are you using?

While I find it amusing to see the janky set up with the oven and what not, it also puts me at ease. It's the kind of thing I would do, and have done. It shows that you are truly just people trying to do something cool. Not a small business in appearance who, thru legal loop holes, are actually part of a large conglomerate.

As others have said your constant updates on production are much appreciated. Not only the detailed descriptions but the photos and the clear statements around what needs to be done really help to boost confidence in the project.

Like everyone else here, I really appreciate these updates. I'm glad to see production is going well. Looking forward to receiving my pair. Funny enough my cousin's birthday is in March, so may get him a pair as well for his Switch.

You guys deserve all of the praise you're getting! Glad I was able to back this project :D

These updates are amazing. This is my favorite KS when it comes to updates. I'm considering buying another set just in support.

I appreciate each and every update in the process and I believe that my investment in the project was worthwhile and the end product will a beautiful addition to my Switch and the collection of accessories and games I have built over the past two years. Thank you for all your hard work.

Can I just say, I’m loving the jerryrigged fryer and toaster oven 😂
