Imagine if you could mentally make your iPhone’s Siri or Android do things like playing your music, getting directions on a map, searching the web, or even playing a game with only the power of your mind. Well, then you are about to participate in an amazing journey to make this type of project a reality.

Introducing MindGear

The MindGear project has the goal of creating an advanced product that will change the way you interact with your mobile device.

With the successful funding of this project, you will be able to have a way to use your mind to access and control many of the greatest features of the iPhone or Android smartphone. The goal of this project is to produce not only the software but also find the means to enhance the hardware so that it is even smaller and easy to use.

The overall goal is to create software offers a wide range of features that are powered by real-time brainwave patterns from an EEG device controlled by your thoughts. Here are some features that the project would like to include:

How Can MindGear Help You?

MindGear will allow you to use your smartphone virtual assistant in a variety of places.

Use it in the city while walking down the noisy city street.

Play music, make calls, and do other things on your smartphone without making it visible to others in public areas.


The military can use it on special operations in situations where voice cannot be used. This provides a great tactical advantage in sensitive situations.

Also, people with vocal and physical disabilities can use it to communicate with loved ones. MindGear can bridge the gap between the mind and voice.


What Does MindGear Do?

The MindGear software allows users to control features on their iOS or Android device by using the power of your brain. The software will also allow you to even receive feedback from your iPhone or Android intelligent virtual assistant while using your favorite features of their smartphone. With the help of NeuroSky’s MindWave Mobile EEG headset, brainwave activity is fed into the MindGear software and your mental abilities are unleashed on the device to make amazing things happen.

How MindGear Works

The MindGear software suite is a comprehensive application for iPhone or Android written in native Objective-C/Java that takes full advantage of the major native functions of the smartPhone.  Having experience with the iOS platform since 2009, many different areas will be covered by the software. I also have experience creating Android applications. MindGear will make the most use of the native capabilities offered to iPhone developers currently through the iOS SDK as well as native feature available in the Android SDK. On the iPhone, MindGear is powered by Siri voice recognition and speech synthesis without having to rely on the Siri server for its responses. All of the processing is done in the phone - offline. In this way, MindGear is capable of providing a custom language processing environment for the recognition to offer quick responses without a lot of delay. All this is great for a normal speech recognition software, but this is where MindGear takes it a step further - moving it from "speech" recognition into "thought recognition."

Using the Neurosky MindWave Mobile headset and integrating its ability to interpret EEG brainwave patterns, we will implement this technology into the MindGear application to replace the speech recognition portion.

How MindGear Talks to the Headset

The user will wear the light-weight EEG headset while running the MindGear application. The dry sensor on the forehead reads the changes in the brain's electrical activity and sends out the EEG data to the iPhone or Android device. The communication between the headset and the software is supported through a wireless Bluetooth-paired connection that filters out the ambient waves and measures the neural activity. The MindWave headset monitors attention, meditation, eye blinking, and other EEG brainwave patterns such as delta, theta, low alpha, high alpha, low beta, high beta, low gamma and high gamma.  As the user thinks of playing music, for example, the headset sends the EEG data to the MindGear iPhone software.

From here, the EEG data is identified and verified by the application and the data is formatted in to human-readable words.  These interpreted words are then processed through an natural-language understanding unit within the software to trigger the intended command. In the case of playing music, the MindGear application will provide a speech synthesized response through Siri or Android speech synthesis and then start playing the music selected.

Since a different set of EEG brainwave values are detected for other user thoughts, such as opening emails, watching videos, and dialing phone numbers, these actions have their own EEG signatures to be processed by the MindGear software.

Using the MindGear software along with the Neurosky MindWave Mobile EEG headset is easy. Just start the application, put on the headset and flip the power switch. The connection takes place and you are ready to think of what you want to do on the iPhone.

The MindGear application is also designed to run in the background so that you can place your iPhone into your pocket or purse and control your iPhone or Android device without touching the phone. This capability make MindGear go a step beyond everyday speech recognition software and allows you to control Siri or your Android device in a variety of new ways.


In Greater Technical Detail:

In greater technical detail, MindGear uses the Neurosky ThinkGear iOS/Android SDK to access the raw EEG values. Native Objective-C and Java is used in Xcode or Eclipse for the project file. The iPhone or Android device is paired and connected to the headset through a wireless Bluetooth connection.

In MindGear's code for iOS, the TGAccessoryManager and TGAccessoryDelegates are imported in the ViewController Class and the application uses the attention, meditation, and EEG power band values as seen below:

As these values are monitored, the MindGear application assigns values the the myRecognizedSpeech NSString value to be processed by the processRecognition methods in the application as shown below for the option of playing music:

And then we process the recognized brain command in a processRecognition method (as shown below for the playing music):

The speech synthesis takes place in a custom Siri class, which accesses the iPhone's speech recognition and speech synthesis center. After Siri responds, the music is played. In this prototype, we are playing an mp3 file called "muisicLoop" as shown below:

After activating the brain command, the headset will wait a few seconds before the dataReceived delegate method is used again to detect more brainwave patterns.

The custom Siri class has a startSpeakingString method which provides the Siri text to speech. In MindGear, a new class has been created that works with the speech recognition and text-to-speech using methods that are called from the Siri Class files.

Since the class is an ultimately an NSObject, MindGear has access to all of the objects available to the iPhone. Knowing this, one can access all of the iPhone great functionality without jail-breaking or using Ruby-based proxies or using private frameworks. In fact, since the prototype was initially set up to recognize speech, the MindGear application can also recognize speech directly from methods that are already present in the UIKit Framework which are used for text entry and controlling the input views.

I have found that Apple tends to hide the coolest things in plain sight. It's the same thing that happens when looking for lost keys or other items. One will look in all the hidden areas of the house, only to find that the item is directly in front of their eyes and only could have been found if one had tried to think different.

MindGear will later use the same techniques to access the 3D iOS maps without exiting out of the application or needing to access Apple's Maps application.

This is just an example from one of the initial prototypes to show how an action is established from the EEG headset and processed into an action on the iPhone or Android Device.

Over 30,000 people have a watched over the past weeks an initial prototype showing how one can control a custom Siri API on the iPhone or the functions of your Android device to obey mental commands. The vimeo and youtube videos demonstrated the opening of a map and menu using mental thoughts.

Beyond the Successful MindGear Project:

After completion, this project will be able to investigate and determine the best way to reduce the size of the EEG headset to a much smaller form factor. With the right partnerships, we might even be able to eliminate the need for a bulky EEG headset and move toward a small, non-intrusive EEG wearable-patch that can be applied easily to the skin.

Integrated with the MindGear software, such a device will change the way we communicate with our mobile devices and with everyone else around us. We will no longer have to pull out our phones to make a call or get those directions from Siri on the maps, we could just think at our devices to produce the necessary sub-vocalizations to issue the mental commands. 

Of course, the first step is to great the MindGear software suite with the successful funding of this project. Later, we can tackle some very interesting features.

The Mind’s the Limit

A project of this magnitude depends upon the backing of many great kickstarters like you and the ability to think in a totally different way. There will be challenges ahead as techniques for communicating thoughts to the devices are enhanced and refined. 

Many difficult tasks have already been overcome in this project such as getting Siri on the iPhone to do anything without having to press the Home button as well as coupling the EEG headset with the mobile device to control some basic functions with the mind.

A Quick Bio for Duane Cash (the MindGear Creator)


I currently live in Mountain View, California, and I work as an iOS Developer researching innovative technologies and applications.

Back in 2003, I invented the Rubik's Triamese, Rubik's Fusion/Fusion+, Rubik's 5x3, Rubik's 4x3 and Rubik's SpeedFusion Cubes that were sold on the Rubik's website from 2003 to 2006.

I am also the current U.S. NSD Powerball Champion (since 2007) for spinning the NSD Powerball to 15,654 rpm.

I have at least 3 patents pending and I continue to work on finding new ideas for a variety of industries.

Risks and challenges

With every large project, there are inherent risk and challenges. Some of these challenges may vary some of the delivery dates of the rewards. To overcome these challenges if they do arise, we will do our best to keep you informed as best as we can every step of the way.

Upon successful funding , regular updates will be made on this page and on the website when it goes live. This is an exciting endeavor. The success of MindGear can change the way we interact with our mobile devices.
