Mars Shall Thunder is adapted from a novel set in the distant future -- but it's not fantasy or traditional science fiction. Characters have ordinary names, and their quest is freedom and justice for 32,000 people in two huge domes that resemble Martian cities. One of them is a great shining capital, called Big Red, an urban paradise with skyscrapers, plazas, parks, and comfortable townhouses, high on a sunlit mesa.

The other colony is M2 -- a mining and farming operation in a dust-blown valley, small, sooty, and dark. Miners and factory workers produce the water, food crops, fine linen, and other luxuries that make Big Red a comfortable citadel.

Mars Shall Thunder is the story of a disaster, a cascade of blunders and coincidences that forced the working poor to rebel against rich overlords, a war that cut Mars in half and destroyed most of it.

WHY AN AUDIO DRAMA?

I've always liked the storyline, characters and themes of Mars Shall Thunder. A radio drama version gives me another chance to tell the story, condensed and amplified as a "movie of the mind" with voice actors, music, and sound effects. A film version of Mars would have to be a blockbuster studio project. I probably won't live long enough to see it happen and have zero chance of directing 70mm Hollywood blockbusters.

A dramatic radio mini-series/CD/audiobook production is relatively easy and cheap. It's very important to me personally and artistically. There are some talented friends already attached to the project in Canada and France. I'll be recording the villains in Branson.

THE CAST

David Pauwels ("Harry Faraday") is a daring choice for the lead in Mars Shall Thunder. A creative writer and script editor, Dave started out writing sketch comedy for NakedNews and developed projects for Filmblanc.com, one of which was directed by Deepa Mehta. His script editing, doctoring, and rewrite services are in steady demand for writers and producers, and Dave completed over a dozen shorts, feature screenplays, a sitcom pilot script, and a novel. An experienced educator and musician, Dave taught English at one of Canada's largest colleges and braved the stage doing standup comedy.

Brent Barkley ("Lt. Col. Terrance W. Beane, U.S.M.C.") brings a wealth of experience and skyrocketing success as a leading man in film, television, and theatre. Brent has starred in AVANT, YIELD TO SELF, PRETENSE, CHRISTMAS VIGIL, WATCHING MR. BODY, and CineNova's JECKYLL AND HYDE. The Toronto actor has performed character roles in THE SORCERESS, MUSE, LAST RESORT, CBC's LET THE GAMES BEGIN, and ZERO HERO.

Joey Neniu ("Chairman of M Corp") lives in rural France, and her soft Dutch-English accent brings a chilling sense of tenderness to the role of a massively parallel mainframe that rules Mars and enforces the Martian Oath of loyalty and self-sacrifice. Joey is a talented actress, dramatist, author and screenwriter, best known for PURGATORIUM.

Emma O'Neill ("Lt. Laura Oak") is a graduate of York University in Acting and alumna of Second City's Improv Program. Emma has performed in Richard III, Grease, Hair, and Les Misérables, and on the Second City Main Stage. Her commercial voiceover clients include Honda, Maple Leaf Foods, YMCA, and HGTV Canada.

Clarke Wilson ("Col. Steel") is a Hollywood pro who appeared in Perfect and has had a long career in film distribution, and radio and television.

Tom Ruppenthal aka Tim Rupright ("Baron von Hipper") is a legendary producer, writer, actor, and musician who pioneered the combination of avant garde rock and live theater skits in the 60s. We've worked together over 40 years in film, television, and radio production.

The first draft of the Mars Shall Thunder audio script is available to download as Adobe Reader pdf (via Scribd, see below). If you enjoy reading radio scripts, I think you'll like it. You shouldn't back anything you feel ho-hum about.

Thanks for reading the script for my sci-fi "movie of the mind." (Wolf DeVoon is a pen name)

Risks and challenges

I have the background and experience to do a good job, but ultimately it's a question of blending voice actors working in remote locations (Toronto and Los Angeles) as well as Branson studio actors, 300+ sound effect cues, and original music score for a 4-hr action-adventure thriller. Not the easiest job in the world.
