MiiPC Shipping Schedule Update & More

We want to alert you to a slight delay - 1.5 to 2 weeks - to the previously announced MiiPC shipment schedule.

Our component supplier had been scheduled to deliver the full quantity of the WiFi/Bluetooth Module component to our manufacturing facility early this week. However, they have just informed us of a delay in fulfilling our order and we wanted you guys to know as soon as we heard.

We have received the first 100 WiFi/Bluetooth modules. We expect to receive the remaining 1900 modules by September 27th.

We will start our production cycle early next week using the 100 modules we already have in our factory.

Although we are disappointed by this latest update, the good news is that we have obtained the necessary FCC/CE approval for shipping MiiPC.

We know everyone is very excited to get their MiiPC device and we cannot apologize enough for this unforeseen delay. We will do whatever we can to expedite the delivery to you all, and get you your devices as quickly as we can!

Revised shipping schedule

With that in mind, here is our revised shipping schedule target dates (shipped from our factory).
  • Developer Kit Backers: MiiPC API reference documentation to be provided by September 30th.
  • Early Bird Backers & Developer Kit Backers: shipments are scheduled to begin the week of September 30th.
  • All remaining Backers: shipments are scheduled to begin the week of October 14th.

All MiiPC devices will be shipped in bulk from our manufacturing facility in Korea to our global fulfillment center in Los Angeles. Then, our LA fulfillment center will be sending each MiiPC device to the shipping address you all have given us. We will provide tracking numbers to everyone just as soon as they are available.

So with that out of the way… now for some good news!

Free additional USB Port Upgrade for everyone!

Many of you have requested an additional USB port. The original design included just two USB ports. Well…we have listened! We are very excited to let you know that we were able to squeeze in this request in our last round of hardware updates. We have upgraded EVERY MiiPC to come with three USB ports. The 3rd USB port is the second port to the right in the photo shown below:

MiiPC Hot-key stickers

In designing the MiiPC interface we created hot-key functions (F1 through F12) to provide you with quick access to popular actions & utilities.

Every member of our team participated in the extensive testing of MiiPC. As we usually connected standard Windows style keyboards, many of us kept forgetting which function keys performed the different actions. We figured some of you would experience the same issue… so we designed a set of hot-key stickers that you can add to your keyboard, which saves you from having to purchase a new Android-specific keyboard.

Each of you will receive a complimentary set of MiiPC hot-key stickers as a token of our appreciation!

What’s in the MiiPC Packaging Box?

We are putting together the final touches for the MiiPC packaging box (sneak peek below). Once you receive your MiiPC box, you will find alongside the MiiPC device, a power adaptor, MiiPC Quick Start Guide and MiiPC hot-key stickers.

Lifetime MiiPC Membership

Every MiiPC unit from Kickstarter comes with a lifetime MiiPC membership. This includes:

  • Free MiiPC Companion Mobile app: Remotely monitor, manage and control MiiPC devices from the MiiPC Companion Mobile App, which will also provide you with MiiPC usage history for each user. The app will be available in both Apple Apps Store and Google Play shortly.
  • MiiPC Parental Web Portal: The same features provided by the MiiPC Companion Mobile App are also available through the MiiPC Parental Web Portal. The Parental Web Portal can be accessed using any major browser from anywhere - including the MiiPC device itself. This provides an easy alternative to the smart phone apps we are providing.
  • MiiPC Web App Center: Complete access to over 500 hand-picked web applications for you and your children. We have curated a kids category with many kid-friendly resources.
  • MiiPC Media Server application: Using the MiiPC device, you can easily stream multimedia content to your local Android tablet or Android smart phone without needing Internet access. This allows you to make MiiPC your media hub!
  • MiiPC Featured Apps application: We have created the ‘MiiPC Featured Apps’ store which contains a list of popular Android apps to get you started. We have tried these apps with MiiPC and think you will enjoy them. We will prebundle this application with your MiiPC, meaning you will be able to access it just as you would any other Android application to select and download any of the featured apps at your discretion.

This is just our first step in the life of MiiPC. We will continue to enhance and improve features based on your feedback and suggestions! We will provide regular updates to MiiPC’s software to make your MiiPC device smarter and even more useful. The fun is just getting started, and we can’t wait to get your devices to you!

MiiPC Forum (Unofficial MiiPC site) for Techies

The fun doesn’t stop there! For the more techie parents or users, we will share tips & tricks to explore ‘hacking’ options to MiiPC and much more. This will be a forum that is open to all users, so they can discuss and share their knowledge as well.

And people wonder why the USPS is constantly losing money. Unit not here yet. Still a couple states away. *SIGH* East Coasters should bear this in mind. The day you get your tracking number is at least a week before it shows up.

Now to go play with it and hit the forums to complain that it's not the right shade of black.

    9. ZeroDesktop, Inc Creator on October 30, 2013

FYI - all MiiPC units have been handed off to USPS for delivery. We are now waiting for our shipping partner to send us the final batch of tracking numbers. There has been a delay in getting the tracking numbers to us due to some issue with our shipping partner's computer system. We have been advised that we should receive the tracking numbers today (Wednesday).

However, as noted, all of the units are in the hands of USPS now. We'll send out the remaining tracking numbers just as soon as we get them from our shipping partner.

Thanks very much for your patience.

@Daren - we were meant to receive the tracking numbers from our shipping partner yesterday. The units have been given to USPS for delivery so we just need to get the tracking numbers so we can provide them to all of you. We're chasing down that information now and will get it out ASAP.

@Zerodesktop, picked up my MiiPC today, but it's the wrong color. I got silver but changed to black. I don't actually like the silver so would like my actual colour choice, but don't want to get hit with UK VAT again. Have you any idea how we can resolve this?

    17. ZeroDesktop, Inc Creator on October 24, 2013

@Kizzy - thanks so much for your wonderful support. You truly epitomize the spirit of what a Kickstarter backer is all about!

    18. Kizzy Gourlay on October 24, 2013

Guys, you will simply ADORE your MiiPCs when they arrive. Do not be despondent. The good thing is that those of us Early Birds who are finding glitches are working around them and providing great support for each other. We now have a working Netflix app and have found that Naked Browser works really well with flash based sites. Please head on over to the forum at where you can find out what to expect when your package arrives. There are links to some working apps and I have even done a blog on my first 2 days with MiiPC.

Any techie people waiting for their MiiPC or who already have it, please come and give us all a boost. The best thing about this project is how us backers have been able to help shape the final product. Thanks guys.

    19. Chout Rodriguez on October 23, 2013

Couple of weeks delayed... All good.
Nov is better than December I suppose lol

    20. ZeroDesktop, Inc Creator on October 23, 2013

@Chout - your MiiPC, along with all the remaining unshipped units, are currently being processed by our LA fulfillment center. We expect to receive tracking numbers by the end of the week or Monday at the latest. We'll get those to you ASAP.

    21. ZeroDesktop, Inc Creator on October 23, 2013

@Kizzy - thanks for the detailed feedback.

Very much agree with your suggestion that everyone start using the MiiPC Forum - including us! We will review the Forum posts and provide feedback ASAP.

Also - we expect to provide a firmware update in the next 2-3 weeks that will provide improvements in many areas especially related to video playback. There is a known issue with the external microphone - we are working with our chipset vendor on this problem but this probably will not be fixed in the upcoming firmware update. But, once it is fixed we will provide another but likely towards the middle to end of December.

      Thanks very much!

    22. Chout Rodriguez on October 23, 2013

Sorry to see the problems you are getting.
Hope they are resolved quickly with our input and help.
I am still waiting on a tracking number/shipment email.

    23. Kizzy Gourlay on October 23, 2013

@ZeroDesktop and backers, now the forum is open I think we should all try to use it. I am posting queries and tips on there but no one visits.

The issues I have found so far with my MiiPC:
      1. I don't know how to get the internal mic to work. No apps can initialise it and there is no option for it in settings. Does this mic even exist or will I have to plug one in after all?
      2. Netflix doesn't work because of some issue with HDCP handshake. It is NOT your HDMI cable, as I have tried a few and same problem with all. According to Netflix green banding etc is caused by a failure for the HDCP (or HD Digital Content Protection) system is not passing through from the app to the machine to the TV. Again, there are no settings available for us to try and adjust this. I think we may get problems with any streaming service that relies on HDCP handshakes.
      3. No Google app support. I downloaded the google play services apk from my tablet and I still have trouble with it. I think the device is unsupported for now.
      4. MX player is the only video player that seems to play video content properly.
      5. Paid for apps on Google play will not install if sideloaded, but the free versions will.
      6. My MiiPC has locked up 3 times when encountering an incompatible app or trying to stream from Netflix with issues and required a hard reset.
      7. You cannot change your time Zone when setting date and time. It stays permanently on -8.00GMT
      8. There is no option for UK Keyboard, so there is no pound key. It will type # and 2 is @ and the @ is " and the # key is \. Can't install the external keyboard helper pro app because it needs Google authentication, which MiiPC lacks.

Just be aware of these potential issues and please can we all share our own experiences and how we have worked around issues so we can help ZeroDesktop improve it for us. Either use the forum at or here on the comments page. That way we can identify if we have a faulty unit or if there is a universal issue that needs fixing by a firmware update.

If anyone manages to fix this HDCP issue with a workaround please post it so we can all benefit and if you can work out how to activate the internal mic I would be grateful, as would every other person with a similar issue.

I don't think it is helpful to receive personal messages from ZeroDesktop if an issue may affect several people. Better to answer the queries openly and honestly on this page so that everyone can benefit from the information. But I still think the forum is the most appropriate place to do this. Cheers guys and I hope we can get these bugs ironed out soon.
For UK people a double down with early bird discount produced Customs bills between #23 and #30 on average. I paid #25.62 because it is being shipped as Merchandise at the cost you paid to back them. Be aware that depnding on wht you have bought, you could face a hefty import fee. The item is NOT being shipped as "gift".

Joe Bowman on October 23, 2013

@Kizzy, thanks for that. Yet another randomly made up fee from HMRC. Gonna take them to task over this, with any luck.

    25. Kizzy Gourlay on October 22, 2013

"Joe and "Dr Dave I paid 25.62 for mine. Again merchandise for $104. I really thought they were sending as gift since we technically paid to help with development and this was a gift for backing them. Does this mean that the MiiPC now falls under UK sales laws? Anyway love the product. A few bugs so heading to the new forum so I acn discuss them. Using MiiPC now to type this and it is really very nice.

@Ashish and @Chris and @anyone else waiting for their delivery. Sorry about the delays in getting MiiPC delivered to you. Not sure why USPS is being so slow about delivering the domestic shipments. If there is any consolation at least there is tracking so you can monitor the progress - as slow as it seems to be - of your MiiPC as it heads cross-country.

A little update: MiiPC was so awesome at making it RIGHT!, I got a brand new replacement in NO time. This new unit is definitely purring like a iron-pumping kitty!
Here is the best part: Flash = AWESOME!, Power consumption = zip/nada, 6-7 Watts @ full throttle, that in my book is "gold-plated-awesomeness"!.
One small thing, how do I get the google play store in there? any links? anyone?

    35. Missing avatar

Joe Bowman on October 21, 2013

@anyone who may get hit with a fee in the UK from HMRC, don't throw away any thing from the packaging that states fees, like the custom declaration paperwork as you'll need that to query any charges.

    36. Missing avatar

Joe Bowman on October 21, 2013

@Dr Dave, many thanks for checking. Zerodesktop sent me a PM that confirms exactly what you said.
@Kizzy, I have had to pay the charge as it gets returned to sender after 20 days and I had no faith in HMRC getting it reviewed in that time scale. I am going to query it and ask for a refund as I have no understanding on how they came to this figure and am not going to let them get away with it without a fight, but it looks like incorrect fees are only dealt with by filling in a non-online form, which is probably designed to frustrate people who then give up.

    37. Missing avatar

Dr. Dave on October 21, 2013

@Kizzy and @Joe I've just checked what is on the outside of the box and my MiiPC was shipped as merchandise with a value of $104. The import tax was £15.65 on that amount. A quick calculation says that the customs folk valued it at £78 which is currently $125 so not the stated value (or what I actually paid either?). Hope that helps a little with you trying to sort out what you get charged.

    38. Kizzy Gourlay on October 21, 2013

@ZeroDesktop, please can you respond to me and @Joe about the value placed on the shipping label. This is very important, as there seems to be some discrepancy with the amount of charges we are having. We were told that this would not happen, although it is out of your hands. But we need a response from you about this as a matter of urgency in case we need to challenge the fees. Thank you.

    39. Kizzy Gourlay on October 21, 2013

Oh did the MiiPC get shipped as a gift? What value did they place on the item? It is vat on the value of the gift, so should be 20% of that. I can't see how there can be nearly £7 discrepancy between @Joe and @Dr Dave. Any other UK customers get stung for a different amount?

    40. Kizzy Gourlay on October 21, 2013

@Dr Dave and @Joe, I wish I were living in dreadful Leyton again, just to have already received my MiiPC. Here in deepest Derbyshire things take so much longer. Perhaps it is something to do with location. A posher part of London costs more in VAT or perhaps an extra charge for poorer parts as "danger money"? LOL. The British know how to charge for everything. Remember the poll tax? They even tried to charge us just for being alive and over 18! Oh well, new tech is worth it and I am so excited about getting this little PC.

    41. Kizzy Gourlay on October 21, 2013

Well, my usps tracking email came today to say charges pending as well. No letter so I will let you know what they charge. I agree it is great value for new technology, just pretty awful that they charge vat on a gift. They charge and charge for everything in this country; jealousy for not having the ingenuity to develop and promote things themselves. Oh well, trying to rake back some of the £1.4bn they undersold our National Postal service for. And to pay for the Queen's new central heating system. Lol
