Union Square, Somerville is known for its niche retail, ethnic markets and artistic diversity. With significant redevelopment and much change anticipated, now is the time to put existing businesses in the spotlight to root them further into the economic landscape.
With gumption and an entrepreneurial spirit, Gabriela and Priscila Miculic opened Kawaii-me boutique with the goal of providing women with stylish clothing at affordable prices. What started as an idea to give their store some visibility turned into a vision of creating an event that suggests a fashion and beauty district in Union Square, involving and uniting a network businesses.
Loop around the Square on a Saturday afternoon, get measured for a suit or shop ready-mades, stop by the Salon for a hair cut and end the evening with dinner, drinks and music at one of the many fine restaurants in the Square.
Our installation, designed by Sophia X. Chang, will give participants a backstage experience at a fashion show. There will be hair, make-up and clothing stations along a winding path where event goers can try out new styles, walk the runway and pose for a photo-op.
Our participants so far include Kawaii-me boutique, fashion designer Nillton Rodrigues, Nervous System, Secret Ships, photographer Cila Miculic (who made our kickstarter video) , Kaya Beauty and Spa and Salon 22. We are in the process of recruiting more Union Square Salons.
We've had the good fortune of a partnership with the Somerville Arts Council who has sponsored our event in part. Click here for date, time and location of our event.
We need your help with the cost of materials to build our one-of-a-kind installation that will transform an industrial space (pictured below) into a place of delight.

Risks and challenges
The time schedule on this project is tight and will require organization and efficient management of the many participants involved. I have a significant amount of experience with working quick deadlines and organizing production on building projects. Our team, which includes the Somerville Arts Council, has a great network of people and who can help with physical production. More of Sophia X.
