About

That's "too long, did not read" in Torengur. And Icelandic, for that matter.

Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition) is a mini-setting and adventure for the Dragon Heresy Roleplaying game. Dragon Heresy is a self-contained complete game in one volume, and the Introductory Set covers Level 1-5.

Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition) contains

  • A non-linear adventure for 4-7 characters of Level 1-5
  • A detailed workup of the Viking-inspired town of Isfjall, suitable as either a home port for an extended campaign or a jumping off point for the adventure
  • Rules for overland journeys in the wild north, several adventuring locations, and of course the quest to rediscover the Lost Hall itself
  • A bestiary containing all the key creatures from the adventure, including the Dragon Heresy unique stats pre-calculated (Threat DC, Hit DC, wound and control thresholds, wounds, and vigor)

Lost Hall of Tyr is 112 pages long, in full color. The Kickstarter is to enhance the quality of the original combat/location maps, and fund a high-quality print run.

Foreword. Matt Finch, Frog God Games designer, publisher, and all-around great guy, is providing a foreword for the book. After so many fun ambush-interviews on Uncle Matt's D&D Neighborhood, I returned the favor and poked him for a few words.

Preface. Contains a brief discussion of the original volume and how it came to be.

Isfjall. An overview of the local geography and the situation that characters entering Isfjall will find themselves in upon arrival. Isfjall is described in enough detail to serve as a base for further adventures; Torengar is a place of constant strife and danger. This section has been added since the 1st edition.

The Journey. This section is broken out and expanded from the original volume. Random encounter tables, weather hazards, and other difficulties that arise when nature itself rises against you. Includes a table for generating weather and temperature, so nature can try to kill the PCs as well as the monsters.

Lögheimili Ruins. A dangerous place. Full of evil it is. In you must go. A micro-dungeon! You don't have to go in. But the undead are rising and threatening all of northwest Torengar, and the natural magic of Lake Odin is becoming unstable.

Domstollinn. The core scenario. It is presented as a set of encounters that can be tackled (or not) in any order. Each might be a riddle, combat, or a physical feat. An encounter will include a set of Challenges, telling the GM what must be overcome, Concealed informationthat the players don't know initially, Alternatives that explore about ways to short-circuit, bypass, or otherwise not just Leroy Jenkins one's way through a challenge, and Rewards, where appropriate.

Goblin Warrens. Two additional micro-dungeons for the brave at heart to explore. More maps by Glynn! Fiendish traps in a faerie stronghold. The old kind of faerie, not the ones with puff-balls on their feet.

Bestiary. Each monster that may be encountered in the scenario is given a description, statistics, and combat tactics to make each one unique. Roughly 30 creatures are presented.

ENnie Gold-medal-winning Cartographer Glynn Seal has agreed to do the new maps if the Kickstarter funds at that level. This book is a combination of the work and improvements done on both the first edition as well as the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Gameversion of the adventure, Hall of Judgment.

As I noted, the layout is pretty much done. Here are a few spreads and examples of what you'll find in the book.

The goals and stretch goals for this project are few in number and great in import. Well, to me. And hopefully to you.

The Lost Hall of Tyr (Second Edition) PDF is nearly complete, and consists of the supplemental material and expansions already created, a new layout and cover, and the existing maps Glynn did for Hall of Judgment (see the example below). If the project doesn't fund, print copies will still be available via Print-on-Demand, and those that already have the Lost Hall 1st Edition PDF will still get their digital upgrades.

Basic Funding Goal: $1,300

The project is funded! The seven combat maps will each be upgraded using the style that Glynn used for Hall of Judgment. The printing at this point will be print on demand.

How easy is this goal to reach? It requires 50 print backers or 100 PDF-only backers to reach this level.

This is a sample map done by Glynn, showing one of the Goblin warrens. The new maps will be in this style.

Digital Print Run: $3,500

The printing will shift from POD to a digital print run. This will still be a softcover, perfect-bound book, but the paper and print quality is upgraded to the same 140gsm/93# Arrow Silk paper used in Hall of Judgment.

How easily can this goal be reached? It would take 135 print-only backers to reach this level.

Lost Hall 1e (64 pgs, 70# paper) vs Hall of Judgment (128 pgs, 93# paper)

 Offset Softcover Print Run: $6,000

We shift to a true offset print run, with smyth-sewn, lay-flat binding using 157gsm/105# matte art paper. This is still a soft-cover book, but it's an extremely up-gunned version.

How much of a stretch? 235 print backers would be required to reach this goal.

Offset Hardcover Print Run: $7,500

The interior stays the same, but the cover is replaced with a hardcover, round-back binding. The image below shows the difference between round-back and flat-back within four high-quality, sewn-binding printed books.

Almost there?  290 print-only backers would be required to reach this goal.

Dragon Heresy is on top.
Dragon Heresy is on top.

There are just a few reward levels, and some details are provided below.

The Far-Seer ($1)

Curious about the project, not ready to take the plunge? I certainly hope you upgrade later, but this level will allow you to track progress, read the updates, and generally act as the Watcher. Heimdallr approves.

Berserker Rules ($5)

One of the reward levels for Dragon Heresy were the "Berserker" combat rules. Explore some of the changes to Fifth Edition that make things just a tetch more entertaining, and introduce fairly old-school levels of risk. This PDF of the combat rules is laid out in the Dragon Heresy style. Also available as an add-on.

PDF-only ($13)

This reward level is for those that either don't already have Lost Hall of Tyr (1st Edition), or simply wish to support the project without committing to a print book. It's been said a few times, but if you already have Lost Hall 1st Edition through my website or DriveThruRPG, you'll be getting an upgrade for free.

Print-only ($26)

If you wish to get a new print book but do NOT wish to also get the PDF, this is what you want. (If you backed the Lost Hall of Tyr 1e Kickstarter, you'll be receiving an upgrade to 2e PDF as a 'thanks' for making 1e happen, so if you want the new hardcopy only, this is the level for you).

Print-and-PDF ($33)

Is it too much to ask for both? At this level, you get a print copy of the book, plus a discounted PDF.

Retail and Bulk ($150)

This level is really targeted at everyone's Favorite Local Game stores, but if you want to get four copies of both Dragon Heresy and the new Lost Hall of Tyr and you're not a game store . . . who am I to stand in your way? I suspect this will be about 20 lbs of books, and is only available to folks in the USA.

That being said, if you're a store outside the US and want to order a bunch of stuff, get in contact with me and we can explore it together.

Gaming Ballistic is proud to offer the following add-ons. While the add-ons themselves will be in the Backerkit phase, you can either increase your pledge now, which will give you credit for your reward or add-ons and help the campaign reach its goals, or wait until the backerkit phase.

Dragon Heresy Introductory Set ($38 Print; $15 PDF; $46 HC+PDF)

The core rules supporting Lost Hall of Tyr (2nd Edition), the Dragon Heresy Introductory Set is a substantially modified variant on the Fifth Edition ruleset (SRD5.1 under the OGL). It includes more details on Torengar and Etera, the background world for Lost Hall, as well as a complete, self-contained game for Level 1-5 play. The game introduces rules for wounds vs vigor to distinguish between blood and grit, great mechanics for shields and grappling, rules for flyting, social standing, and more. If you don't have it, this is a great time to pick it up.

Note: this is a 3.1-lb book and they're all in the USA; international shipping of a hardcover is likely to be expensive.

Hall of Judgment for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG ($19 Print; $8 PDF; $23 Print+PDF)

This is the Dungeon Fantasy RPG variation of Lost Hall of Tyr that was used to generate the 2nd Edition. If as I do, you also enjoy the GURPS roleplaying engine, Hall of Judgment is the first licensed third-party product for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG. If you missed the Kickstarter this is a great time to nab it.

Dungeon Grappling ($12 Print; $6 PDF; $15 Print+PDF)

Gaming Ballistic's very first product, and still the best grappling rules on the market (in fairness, it's a low bar). Finally bring grappling rules that don't suck to the table for Fifth Edition, the Pathfinder RPG, and Swords & Wizardry.

Dungeon Grappling makes grappling fun again, especially for the GM and their monsters, by introducing the "control" damage type and working throw how to apply it for both armed and unarmed grapples. And tentacles. And nets. Seamlessly move between armed combat and grappling . . . just like they did in the old days of Fiori, Talhoffer, and other historical fighting manuals.

The Battle Shield of Torengar ($650)

Just for fun, I will hand-build for you a mostly-authentic viking-style center-gripped shield. Made of quarter-sawn poplar wood, with a hand-carved oak handle, mild steel boss, and faced, backed, and edged with goat rawhide, it's put together with hide glue, and tapered at the edges. Who doesn't want their own Viking-style shield, made to historical dimensions? Make an impression at your next staff meeting.

You'll also receive print and PDF copies of all four of my printed books.

If you pledge at this level (or buy one as an add-on), I'll contact you and we can work out the details of size and how you want it painted. The shield will likely weigh about 4.5-7 lbs, depending on our mutually-agreed-upon specs.

This is only available in the USA, because even inside the USA, this is horrifically expensive to ship!

Some prior samples below. The first two (and the plain black one, which is the hide-covered shield painted with authentic milk-based paint with charcoal pigment) are my Asfolk training shields. Each weighs 6 lbs. The rest  were shields for backers of the Dragon Heresy project at the highest level.

This is the intended schedule.

  •  December 2018: Kickstarter campaign
  •  January 2019: Funds settle, Backerkit phase; prelim PDF distribution for error proofing; new maps worked
  •  Feb 2019: PDF finalization and print order submission; final PDF distribution
  •  March-May 2019: Print overseas; transit to warehouse; fulfillment
  •  June 2019: Delivery of hardcopy product to backers

To help manage post-campaign add-ons, as well as the distribution of the final product(s) to backers, Gaming Ballistic will be using Backerkit to conduct the post-Kickstarter surveys and fulfillment.

Backerkit is a company whose purpose is to help creators manage these details, including add-ons and shipping costs. When the campaign ends, you will be invited to fill out a Backerkit survey to confirm shipping details, and choose any add-ons you might like to purchase. If you've pledged more than your reward total, this will show as a credit on your account.

The Backerkit phase will only last between 7-10 days. The survey will probably only have two or three questions in it: shipping address, reward selection, and if you wish to be added to the Gaming Ballistic mailing list.

"Ships to Whole World" is not Free Shipping!

An important point: the project will ship to the entire world.

Shipping in the USA of physical product will use the USPS media mail, and shipping will be added to your pledge total during the Backerkit phase. I expect the Lost Hall product to come in between 1.3 and 2 lbs.

International shipping will use the cheapest method that ensures reliable delivery. Since the point of the Kickstarter is a big offset print run, this means diverting a box from the printer to . . . elsewhere. Not sure where that will be.

I don't control shipping costs, and there's no way around it: International shipping is very expensive, and time-consuming to boot. If you have purchased multiple physical products, such as a physical copy of Dragon Heresy plus your physical copy of Lost Hall of Tyr, Gaming Ballistic will do everything possible to reduce costs. Certain countries (such as Brazil) are ridiculously expensive to ship to, and those costs will need to be passed on during the Backerkit phase. Again: I suspect international shipping will not be cheap.

If there are a significant number of International orders, I will explore the option of a small print run in the UK using the same printer as the digital print run level. These can ship using Royal Mail, will be approximately as thick as the offset run, but cannot be sewn-binding: they will be perfect-bound.

Risks and challenges

The primary risk to backers is the timing of delivery.

The supplement is already complete. The things that tend to bog down a project are non-issues with this one. Art is done. Layout is done. The maps are the incomplete component.

The "risk" is mostly if we did not fund that the project's high-end print goal will not be reached.

All add-ons are already in hand.

There are very few things that would disrupt the project other than mild schedule slips – though of course things can always go pear-shaped. Gaming Ballistic will provide regular updates as to the project’s progress, and do everything possible to deliver the final product on or ahead of schedule.

One last risk: International shipping is unpredictable and expensive. While US shipments will come via media mail, international shipments are a different story. The add-ons in particular may come from many different locations in order to save on shipping cost, and may still add up to a good deal of money. Gaming Ballistic will work with you to do the best we can, but it may still be spendy.
