Homeschooled The Project
By Rachel Papo
As criticism of the U.S. education system grows among parents, so does the appeal of homeschooling. Shortly after moving to Woodstock, New York, in 2010, I began to photograph a small number of families living in the region who follow this path. While much of the discussion about the subject tends to revolve around parents and their beliefs, I chose to focus particularly on the lives and routines of the children, in an attempt to capture their spirit, and the meaning of growing up outside the conventional four classroom walls.
I devoted two years to my photographic research and the result is a quiet meditation on the home education movement, from the children's perspective. As I was photographing them I allowed myself, for a few hours each time, to escape into their mysterious, magical world – one which emphasizes an embrace of nature in environs that nurture the imagination.
"Her dreamlike pictures speak to afternoons lost in her subjects’ worlds; warm wood- paneled rooms, snowy forests and fecund backyards. For some of the kids, their education was as much about exploring the natural world as it was concerned with textbook learning."

The costs of producing high quality, limited print-run photography books are significantly high. With the disappearance of so many independent, local booksellers and the pressure exerted by large chains such as Amazon.com, publishers often work together with the artists to find ways to fund their book. By pre-ordering a copy of the book, making a contribution and spreading the word, you will help me reach this goal. You will only be charged if the funding goal is reached at the end of the campaign. THANK YOU for your support!

About the video:
Many thanks to Yehuda Swed, Moran Wetzig, Gosia Winter, Micah Frank And Kathi Tennstedt-Horn (mother of Helene and Anton), for their talent and involvement in creating this Kickstarter video. The film was all shot and created in Berlin, Germany. The two children filmed in the video were helping to illustrate the story of the film, and are not homeschooled.
