Our Mission Statement

20 Seconds is a print-only magazine for experimental music and art. It’s built by and for designers, writers and photographers who feel they’re not being challenged enough by what they’re reading and seeing.

But more importantly, 20 Seconds is about engaging with what’s relevant to us. As a community, we’re intrinsically wired to discuss, debate and share. Inspired by other publications proving that print is not dead and neither are honesty or independence, 20 Seconds Magazine is about documenting those expressions.

It’s also a dialogue, founded on fluidity. And the conversation is something we feel can last as long as the ink on the pages.

In response to the mundane programming, sponsored-content-dependent, stock-photo-generated presentations to which we all suffer, we propose a solution. Published twice annually, 20 Seconds will be a collection of original photography, longform journalism, poetry, interviews and more.

20 Seconds Magazine is not interested in stories for stories’ sake. Or in the same headshot flooding your devices in involuntarily advertised form. It is interested in bold art, fearless music and the real people behind it.

As a publication, we're independent of major advertising corporations and click-bait titles, but not of our readers. Without the financial support of our community, we cannot produce the type of quality, independent journalism and design that we want to contribute to our cultural landscape.

Adventurous music and art take risk; they can be wonderfully inclusive. That’s why we’re collaborating with our favourite photographers, poets, musicians, DJs and artists of all dispositions to articulate our perspective.

Together, we can succeed in exploring work that continues to intrigue and resist.

As a collection it will last a while, individually a lifetime. But definitely more than 20 Seconds.

What’s in this?

In issue one, we focus on artists who avoid easily digestible ideas. From orchestral oscillations in Krakow to improvisations on the stages of Athens, from body movement archiving in the Netherlands to photos of Shanghai’s futuristic urban underground, these are the people and places that will fill the pages to come this January.

Where does the money go?

This is an independent project. All of the proceeds go toward the service and raw materials involved in offset printing in small batches. It’s costly but proven to last. It will still be sitting on the coffee table in a decade’s time—and worth a read.

Who are we?

Daniel Melfi (Editor-in-Chief)

Daniel is a Canadian journalist, editor and curator living in Berlin. His work has appeared on websites like Vice, Resident Advisor and Electronic Beats and in magazines like Borshch and Mixmag. He passes much of his time gazing up at trees, watching music and listening to art.

Matthew Liegghio (Lead Designer)

Matthew is an entrepreneur but a love of design seduced him into trying his hand at an artist’s life. So far, translating his career in marketing and sales to artist management and creative direction has been a fruitful experience.

Say hello!

Christian Pannenborg (Contributing Editor)

As a DJ, record shop owner and local grillmaster, Berlin’s Christian Pannenborg has been at the forefront of many a musical renaissance at the helm of Berlin’s Record Loft. Whether spending his time cheering on the football club of his heart or documenting crests and falls on the dancefloor, his is a transcendent energy.

Jordi Cervera (Contributing Photographer)

Since relocating to Berlin, Jordi’s emotive, artistic style of photography has been welcomed like an old friend. For over a decade he was the leading photographer in Ibiza, shooting the island’s illustrious fashion magazines, elaborate parties and fascinating crowds.

Maja Chiara Faber (Contributing writer and photographer)

Since swapping Krakow for Amsterdam, the photographer, producer and writer Maja Chiara Faber has dug into astrology and occultism in the Dutch capital. Known for her avant-garde Lava Film Festival in Krakow and wide-ranging DJ sets, she’s been a creative collaborator in demand.

Andrew Hicks (Contributing Writer)

Andrew has been an active DJ, curator and festival coordinator for over a decade in Toronto. Along with his MFA in the artistic renaissance of 1980s New York, he’s curated music and other works for exhibitions in places like Toronto’s AGO, Unity Festival and more.

Jovana Ivanac (Contributing Writer)

Originally from Pancevo, Serbia, Jovana has spent time studying, writing and producing music—as Shaan—mainly in cities like Belgrade and Athens. In Issue One she contributes two poems from her growing archive.

Claire Mouchemore (Contributing Writer)

As a Berlin-based writer, Claire's words have appeared in magazines like Zweikommasieben, Borshch, Crack and I-D. As a selector, Claire's adventurous taste goes by the name of Slavbride69.

Alice Chang (Contributing Photographer)

Alice Chang is an analogue photographer based in Shanghai. She explores China’s fluctuating cultural narrative one shot at a time.

Marie-Therese Helmschmied (Contributing Editor)

Marie brings her sharp eye and enthusiasm to a growing list of projects, which includes work for German television station Sat.1, where she indulges in her interest for people and their stories—and a lot of talking.

André Varty (Contributing Photographer)

Based in Toronto, André has been documenting Canada's independent music scene for over half a decade. Having forged a signature style on smokey concert stages and in dark dive bars, his photos adorn band pages and album covers across Canada's largest city.

Gabriella Achadinha (Contributing Photographer)

Gabriella is a photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. With a cinematic style imparted on her through years of work in the film industry, she can't help but see shots through a tailored lens.

Risks and challenges

Printing magazines is a costly process. Our team is working on a volunteer basis, or far below industry standards, financially speaking.

If we hit our goal we'll be able to not only print the magazine, but also to pay our team fairly. If we exceed that, we'll be able to host the panel discussions, live concerts and clubnights that we've already been planning.
