As fans of space and sci-fi, our team has played a variety of games -- from classical RTS games to 4X games, as well as traditional wargames.
All of these experiences are great, but the problem is that they usually tend to lean heavily toward one side or the other. One game might have an expansive universe and complex empire management, but primitive combat. Another might have a deep combat system, but there's nothing else besides fighting.
In Starfall Tactics, we want to marry the tactical combat seen in wargames with great visuals and an expansive universe populated by thousands of players -- a universe that you can explore and get lost in.
Combat in Starfall Tactics is designed to provide a tactical experience, down to its most basic elements.
We strive to achieve RTS style combat and controls, while preserving the depth of a wargame.
Things like real-time projectile impact, line of fire, and ship collision have been implemented precisely for this reason: to help you create interesting scenarios on the battlefield.
Every time a spaceship takes damage to its structure, there’s a chance that one of its components may fail or be destroyed. The closer a component is to the point of impact, the higher the chance it will fail.
In Starfall Tactics, every vessel can be equipped with a module that grants a certain skill or utility. This can completely change the way you interact with a ship and its abilities.
Take, for example, two modules: Cloak System that grants invisibility, and the self-explanatory Self-Destruction. Load them up into a couple of smaller, low-cost ships -- and voilà! You now have a team of invisible kamikaze bombers.
Everything in Starfall Tactics, from the hull of your ship down to the individual engines, is created using blueprints. Players can easily customize and outfit vessels, adapting their tactics for a variety of situations.
Depending on the loadout, a single spaceship can perform a variety of tasks. Build whatever fits your strategy best: quick, agile scout ships, heavy defensive cruisers, support ships, assault carriers and many other vessel types.
Customization also extends to fleets, which can level up and take on a variety of roles -- depending on the situation at hand.
Every choice matters: the diverse range of tools directly influences your strategy against opponents and allows you to create truly unique fleets.
In Starfall Tactics, your fleet embodies you: the player. It is a symbol of status and power that is easy to grasp and appreciate.
It seems only logical to give you the option to change the visual style of your spaceships.
Most of us at Snowforged are fans of tabletop wargames, so we wanted to preserve the feeling of ‘physicality’. Instead of applying some mysterious filter, players use different colors of paint for their spaceships. Paint can also have other properties, such as a flat or matte finish and varying surface roughness.
We also plan to provide epic skins for certain spaceship models. These skins will not be just a simple paint job -- but rather, they will change the model’s shape, as well as add custom parts and detail.
The core experience in Starfall Tactics is split into two main modes. The Quick Game and Ranked Game options provide for short, intense matches that last 10-20 minutes, similar to a quick game in a competitive RTS.
Then there is the Galaxy Conquest mode.
Imagine a persistent galactic map inhabited by warring factions, pirates, mercenaries and various NPCs. Just like in most 4X games, players have a single starship representing their fleet on the map - an avatar via which they interact with the world.
In Starfall Tactics, you are able to experience the galactic map with its assortment of content as a solo or co-op experience.
The map is divided into several sections that consist of safe zones, faction locked territories and neutral regions. There is a variety of activities to undertake here: from trading, discovering new planets and mining asteroids to carrying out assignments given out by your faction's officers.
Sadly, no amount of content is enough to capture the feeling of a universe that is real and alive. This is also true for most traditional 4X games, which tend to get repetitive over time.
In Starfall Tactics, we plan to prevent this by allowing thousands of players, each with their own agenda, to interact on the galactic map.
Those brave enough to venture outside of civilized space will earn bigger profits and gain access to most rewarding missions and raids.
In these lesser explored areas, players run clans that can take ownership of different sectors and conquer outposts. Every object in the Outer Regions provides certain benefits to its owner, so clans will have to fight each other for precious territory, forge alliances and do anything to ensure their survival.
Regardless of clan size, the outcome of any battle is decided via an instance-based, team vs. team match. This will help prevent a typical problem in MMOs, where a large alliance dominates the map through sheer numbers.
Win by using sheer power, cunning strategy, diplomacy or back-stabbing. This is YOUR chance to become a local authority and control your own corner of the galaxy.
Starfall Tactics will not be a game that you have to buy in order to play. Instead of charging a premium price for a niche game, we want to drop the price barrier completely and welcome new players to the genre.
As soon as our Kickstarter went live, we had players messaging us and saying that they love the idea behind the game, but that free to play makes them uncomfortable.
We couldn't agree more.
The free to play model, as most of us have come to know it, has traditionally been associated with a less than stellar experience, uninspired game mechanics and an overpowering influence of a cash-shop.
But that was over 10 years ago and things change over time.
Today, we get to enjoy a variety of awesome experiences that don’t require an upfront payment. Games like Hearthstone, Warframe, Heroes of the Storm and many others have shown that free to play games can be fun and rewarding, without compromising on quality.
We plan to take a page from trading card games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone.
These games rely on booster packs - a package of cards or figurines, designed to add to a player's collection.
At the start of your game in Starfall Tactics, you will be offered a selection of regular blueprints that can be used to build spaceships and craft the necessary equipment.
You can get more blueprints by winning matches, doing PvE missions, participating in in-game events, as well as spending in-game currency or real money on booster packs.
At Snowforged, we believe that being generous to players is essential for the long-term success of Starfall Tactics.
Rather than holding back on booster packs, we plan to give them out to players on a regular basis, over the course of the game. It is our hope that this will encourage players to use and purchase booster packs more frequently and enjoying doing so, rather than treating them as some sort of commodity.
We also believe that if you, our players, enjoy the game, then you are much more likely to tell your friends about it. In this case, trying to immediately force monetization would be detrimental to our long-term goals.
And that's the philosophy that we plan to follow. We will be providing options like a premium subscription, as well as vanity items. But the goal will always be the same: providing more choices for players, rather than selling power directly.
Why wait when you can play the game early? You will have an opportunity to explore the game, learn some of its nuances and get better before the general public will get its hand on it.

Tactical team packs are specialized groups of 2-5 spaceships that have a certain synergy among them. Be it complementary modules, loadouts that work well together or shared history, these teams have a distinct purpose on the battlefield.

It’s dangerous to go into space alone, so how about some companions?
In Starfall Tactics, players will be able to hire captains and assign them to one of their space fleets. These fleets can then be sent on various missions across the galaxy, netting you various resources and rewards.
To interact with captains on a more personal level, our team will help you create one using your photo as reference. After the Kickstarter campaign, we'll send you a survey via which you can submit a photo, come up with a name for the captain, as well as write a short back-story. The captain will then be added to the pool of candidates available for hire to you and other players.
Captain name and back-story are subject to creative review. Maintaining consistency with the feel and tone of the game world is important to us.
Have a cool idea for a module that can really mess with your opponents? How about a neat trick you always wanted to see implemented in a space game?
Well, this is the reward for you!
After the Kickstarter campaign, we'll send out a survey via which you will be able to submit up to three ideas for modules, along with references. Our team will review and enhance these ideas, with the aim of successfully integrating them into the game.

Our team has been working on the game full time for about eight months. Just two months in, we held our first playtest with external testers.
The feedback we received just blew our minds. Despite the game being so early in development, most testers felt really positive about Starfall Tactics. They also provided a lot of feedback that we used to the further improve the game.
As we've been preparing for our first alpha test, we realized that Starfall Tactics could be bigger than a regular session-based game.
Our ideal vision of a game has all of the depth of a tactical multiplayer title and combines that with a living, breathing galaxy. This vision is ambitious and scary at the same time. It needs a world that players get to shape and conquer, all wrapped around tactical combat and solid gameplay.
To realize this vision, Starfall Tactics needs a lot of good content: more ships, more modules, voiceovers for different units, PvE missions, even a brand new alien faction.
We have secured enough funds that would allow us to release Starfall Tactics as a multiplayer, session-based game -- regardless of whether or not our Kickstarter campaign is successful.
But that would be just a tiny slice of what the game can really offer.
Hiring additional help will help us get the game done faster and provide more content and a deeper experience overall.
With your help, Starfall Tactics can become be the best game it can be -- without compromising on content or features.
Risks and challenges
As you know, game development can be tough. Grueling, in fact.
There's a lot to consider, especially in an online game - mechanics, game balance, in-game economy, servers, code optimization, etc. Making sure that all of these parts work efficiently and cohesively is challenging.
However, most members of our team have an extensive background in professional software development. In fact, two of our programmers have worked on complex projects and wrote server management software that has been used by over 3.5 million people.
This is a first entertainment software project for this studio, but we are confident that our professional approach and expertise in the field of software development will greatly aid our work on Starfall Tactics.
