A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
In 2015, we have reinvented the classic Holga camera. Updated for the digital age yet retaining the simplicity and fun of the Holga camera, Holga Digital has became a hit and was loved by photographers from first-timers to professionals. Without requiring precise settings, Holga adds inspiration and creativity with its subtle randomness on every shot.
Before back when digital photography has not become the common pastime as it is now, the solid photographs are considered to be ceremonious and are often used on commemorative occasions. With the increasing ease of taking photos, done simply with a smartphone, we feel like the essence of this once memorable experience has been gradually slipping away. Perhaps to really capture that beautiful moment, a digital photograph is simply not enough.
Holga has been producing cameras for 30-odd years. Mr. T.M. Lee started Holga as a company manufacturing quality external flash. As external flash was made increasingly obsolete by cameras with integrated flash, Holga came up with the idea to build an affordable camera for the emerging Chinese Mainland market, where 120mm film was then still the norm. In 1982, the legendary Holga 120 was born. To Mr Lee’s amazement, the camera was met with more interest worldwide, as people appreciated its simple yet reliable construction and ease of use.
Yet, Holga did not stop at the 120. Starting from the basic 120, Holga worked around and made multiple upgrades to the 120, remarkably the popular 120N with a hotshoe and the 120CFN with a built-in flash and color filters.
Moving towards the mid-80s, Lee made another camera for 135 films and logically named it Holga 135. The 135 platform proved to be extremely reliable and versatile. It has been modified into 135 panoramic, 135 TLR and even the famous 135TIM, of which the buttons are arranged in a smiley face and takes half-frame photos on a single film.
Additionally, Holga has made dozens of other cameras ranging from the Micro 110 to the 120-3D Stereo Camera, all preserving the unique distortion, lens flares and vignettes of the original Holga.
In the past few decades, Holga camera was being used for its surrealistic, impressionistic scenes for landscape, still life, portrait, and more notably street photography. A Holga photograph, which was taken by photojournalist David Burnett of former vice-president Al Gore, during a 2000 campaign appearance earned the top prize in a 2001 White House News Photographers' Association Eyes of History award ceremony. Famous photojournalist Teru Kuwayama was rarely seen without his Holga, as it is the most versatile and reliable camera in the wilds of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Instant camera has been bulky, uncontrollable and uninspiring. This is changed with Holga Printer.
Holga is always open to new ideas. In the 2010s, the function of camera is gradually overtaken by smartphones. While adding some smart functions into the camera to compete with the phone seems to be the trend, we would rather strive to incorporate the phone itself.
With the same philosophy, we proudly present you the Holga Printer. We designed the printer as the Holga 120 of 2018. All the while utilizing the most common electronic device today – smartphone. Together with our exclusive app, users can now produce Holga-styled photos and have them developed on the Holga printer through the use of Fuji Instax mini film. The whole printing process is completely manual so batteries are not required at all.
Another Holga product coming out with the printer will be its mobile counterpart, the HolgaCam app. Coupled with the Holga Printer, you will be able to start working on that scrapbook of precious memories.
See the Holga Printer in action!
Instant photography has made a strong comeback recently. In an age where a flawless photo can be taken on many devices with a single click, a physical photograph is more cherished than ever. While millions of digital photos are stored and easily forgotten, a few chosen printed photographs are framed and displayed.
The classic instant camera makers have released new models, but they remain largely the same as their ancestors. As the printer is linked directly to the camera, every shot is printed out directly in the same fixed style and effect.
This is changed with Holga printer. With the app, you'll be able to use the camera of your phone to capture memories and apply classic and beloved Holga filters and effects before printing it out. Forgot to take the printer with you? No worries, just capture those moments now and print them out later. As you crank the dial, watch as your personally bring that treasured memory to life through the Holga printer.
At first glance, our Printer looks like a Holga 120 without the lens. It also comes in the iconic bright, vibrant colors featured on many Holga cameras, along with our logo presented proudly on the cover. The design is equally nostalgic. Parts are made of molded polymer with cleverly designed joints, so little need for bolts and fasteners. Just like other Holga products, the appearance of the Holga printer is as iconic. It adds character to any space no matter it is sitting on your shelf or placed on the table of your favorite cafe.
While little has changed regarding instant cameras since the 80s, the Holga Printer takes the full advantage of modern technology and will print photos in the effect of your choice.
A tailored mobile app, available to both iOS and Android, will be released along with the printer. With our app, you will be able to print an unprocessed photo with the recommended settings or blend in classic Holga filter effects to create different vibes for your chosen shots. Extensive research has been done to recreate the Holga experience digitally. Through the Holga filter design, the Holga printer app will be able to convert your phone-snaps into authentic and realistic Holga shots. With our app, you will also be able to add text and icons to your photos, opening up unlimited design possibilities.
We have carefully selected Fuji Instax mini film for its affordability and world-wide availability. Each cartridge contains 10 shots and can swap in seconds. The instant film prints crisp photo and our printer takes full advantage of it. The film fully develops within minutes after being released from printer.
There is more to the Holga printer. We have incorporated many new technologies to make the Holga Printer the first choice for creating unique, artistic and stylish instant photos. All aimed to bring you the perfect option for your throwback vibes and nostalgic vintage needs.
Modern Construction: Modern anti-slip materials and magnets has been incorporated into the printer's design for a better user experience. As a result, the Holga Printer is less heavy as well as easier to operate than the average photo-printer. With its quick and easy assemble nature, manifesting those valuable moments into physical photographs comes both smoothly and nicely. Operation is really simple – many people are able to unfold the camera and replace film cartridge on their first try - without any instruction! Just like our cameras.
Folding Sun Blind: For the optimized photo quality, a dark space and a certain distance is required between your phone and the printer shutter. Taking inspiration from early folding cameras, we have revived the foldable design to facilitate the required environment.. The printer itself may be relatively large in size, however once it is folded, it is no bigger than the Holga 120.With its simple folding design, the Holga Printer can be easily carried around. Whether it be a picnic out with friends, a family road trip, or a self-exploration journey, you will be able to take the Holga Printer and create those precious memories.
No Battery Needed: In our increasingly gadget-filled lives, the Holga printer is purposely designed to be a purely manual device. That’s one less charging cable in life, but one more soothing connection to your photography experience.
Exclusive Precision Frame: To help users better align their photos, the Holga Printer has a detachable precision frame that is made from modern magnets and a special adhesive rubber. This allows better precision when positioning the phone above the printer shutter. The adhesive rubber will stick to the phone surface while leaving it scratch-free, while the magnet will allow the frame to snap neatly back into the required position for printing.
No WiFi/Bluetooth Required: Inspirations and emotions come at spontaneous moments. To not hinder this wonder process, the Holga Printer allows user to print photos without the use of any wireless connections. Photo-printing can be done simply by placing the phone on top of the printer. No more connection issues or buffering time, just instant and beautiful moments.
The Classic Holga Mechanism: With its classic shutter and spherical lens, the Holga Printer retains the magic of the Holga cameras. However, with the Holga Printer, we are bringing back the beloved feature of the Holga 120: the power to create double-exposure photos. With the printer, you will be able to interpose photos on top of another easily on a single film. Yet, why stop at two? The Holga Printer allows multiple photos to be overlayed together at once, hence creating a unique piece that no other instant printer can do.
Back in 2015, when we were working on the Holga Digital project, we digitalised the iconic Holga camera and users were able to enjoy the fun of taking pictures again. Yet, there was more to the iconic Holga 120N, which was Holga a classic camera back in the 2000s, that couldn’t be achieved with Holga Digital back then: The Holga 120 Instant back, which was an added extension to the Holga 120N to allow it to print photos and hence, transforming the Holga 120N into the Holga Instant Camera Since the success of the Holga Digital project, we have been working to revive that feature and we are happy to announce that we did it.
By utilizing the same optical technology on the Holga Printer, users are now able to print out Holga-styled photos just like many did with the Holga Instant Camera before. We strive to make the experience more accessible, smoother and most of all, more authentic and true to the classic Holga experience that many has grown to love and enjoy. The Holga 120N may be gradually fading out of the spotlight, but through the Holga Printer, its essence lives on.

T.M. Lee - created the Holga. His vision was to inspire millions of Chinese to create lasting memories with this simple and affordable camera, at a time when photography was an expensive luxury in China that few could indulge in. Today, more than two decades later, the Holga has inspired millions throughout the world with the unique imagery it creates in the hands of the inspired artist. The Holga has become a classic.
Risks and challenges
At Holga, although we encourage people to embrace the imperfectness of things, we are also one to constantly improve ourselves with our mistakes. During our first campaign with the Holga Digital, we had faced many unforeseen challenges that were overwhelming at times. But thanks to the support from fans, we have managed to brave through and taught ourselves many important lessons along the way, mainly matters regarding manufacturing and logistics.
As we open up this new chapter, we are not claiming that we’ve become perfect, but we are definitely not as lost and disorganized as we once were. This time we can say with absolute confidence that from answering inquiries to managing delivery, everything will be smoother and more pleasant. We welcome you to this new chapter of Holga and thank you for putting your faith in us.
