About this project
All the stories in Built On Strange Ground are real, from the experiences of an immigrant couple who found their new house was inhabited by the dead, to the memories of a reclusive neighbor who hides a secret among her pet dogs, to a startling investigation into the hiding place of one of America's most infamous serial killers. There are more than 200 pages of stories to be found here, and they cover a great range of experiences, walks of life, and private, quiet explorations into how we as human beings deal with the inexplicable.
We've hit our funding goal, so it's time to announce stretch goals. Ours are simple, for the most part--pay for more printing, and pay the artists.
- $23,000 - Pay for a new printing of Then It Was Dark
The Kickstarter will likely consume all the copies of TIWD leftover from the last printing. This will pay for another round. (Note: Everyone who orders a copy of Then It Was Dark through this Kickstarter will receive one whether or not this goal is hit.)
- $25,000 - A variant cover, and the first round of artist bonuses
We've already got a backer-only vote out for the cover, if we hit $25,000 we'll also have the second favorite cover made into finished art and printed on a limited run of books. You'll be able to pick the cover you want in your Reward Survey.
Additionally, if we hit $25,000, each contributor/team will get a $20 bonus on top of their original pay. From there on, all additional money will go to artist bonuses, plus the cost of printing/shipping additional books.
- At $26,000, each contributor/team will get a $30 bonus on top of their original pay.
- At $27,000, each contributor/team will get a $40 bonus on top of their original pay.
- At $28,000, each contributor/team will get a $50 bonus on top of their original pay.

Built On Strange Ground is a spiritual sequel to our first comic anthology, Then It Was Dark: A collection of personal paranormal experiences, true ghost stories, friend-of-a-friend tales and brushes with the unknown, which is currently in its second printing.
It did so well, we decided to go deeper, expanding our exploration into these types of stories with a sequel focusing on location-based experiences.
If you missed Then It Was Dark the first time around, we're offering it in a special bundle with Built On Strange Ground during this kickstarter, at a special reduced price. Get them both for twice as many stories, twice as much gorgeous art and twice as many peeks beyond the veil of reality humankind was never meant to pierce.
Peppermint Monster Press believes in paying their contributors a fair rate for their hard work, and most of the budget will be covering that. The cost of shipping and printing come next. Finally there's the Kickstarter fees, the budget set aside for producing backer rewards, and a small miscellaneous safety net to cover unexpected costs that may come up during production.
Built On Strange Ground is available in PDF form at every level, and in both PDF and softcover form at every level worth $25 or more! Most reward levels include all the goodies of the previous level.
Backers at this level will have their portraits drawn into the book and "hung" on our wall of fame.
Backers at this level will receive a customized "passport" with stamps from impossible places.
Passports are covered with your choice of red or black vinyl.
This reward level will include a "weird world traveler" box containing over a dozen photos, sketches, and miscellaneous souvenirs from various strange grounds, infamous, haunted and paranormal places across the Midwestern United States. Each box will be different, built around the backer's tastes.
At this reward level, the backer will receive a 4-8 page comic commission from Sarah Benkin, based around a subject of their choice. It can be a personal experience, a strange thing that happened to them, or just a subject they're interested in.
Risks and challenges
I've told all contributors to hold off work on the anthology until the project is funded. (Any preview art you see here was paid for out of pocket by me.) This is because it is my policy not to ask my contributors to start work until the money that I will pay them with is in my hand.
However, because of that, there is always the possibility that one or two of the contributors will, for whatever reason, fail to deliver. Although my contributors are all working professionals who've shown they can put out sequential work in the past, there is always (heaven forbid) the possibility that some accident, illness or family emergency will arise and stop one of the contributors from contributing.
If this happens, and it significantly affects the planned length of the book, I may have to revisit other artists who originally applied, or turn to other creators I know to fill in. I will inform my backers of the situation and of any delays it may cause. If any other unforeseen circumstance should cause a delay, I will inform my backers of that as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
