Gon KiRin is a giant steel fire-breathing dragon art car created by Teddy Lo and Ryan C. Doyle, and we are trying to get it to Michigan's grandest art event of the year, Artprize.
Sixty feet long, 23-feet high, and eighteen feet wide, Gon Kirin is a spectacular, fire-breathing dragon sculpture on wheels. Built on a '63 Dodge dump truck chassis and covered in materials scavenged from the jungles of Detroit and Oakland, this car is equipped with a massive propane cannon powered by two accumulators and covered with more than 750 meters of color-changing LEDs. Originally designed and built in the Motor City and destined for the 2010 Burning Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, Gon Kirin has performed around the United States and is the most awarded project in the history of Maker Faire. Our next destination is ArtPrize, and we're excited to bring this one-of-a-kind art car to Grand Rapids, MI for nightly performances in front of tens of thousands of people from September 18- October 6. We provide a highly interactive experience for participants and focus especially on kids, helping them discover the ways art and science intersect and the boundless possibilities of their imagination. Our artists and engineers will be on site to answer questions and let you take over the controls. Control the 24-foot long kinetic tail, fire features in the mouth and body, perform a light show, and even be the DJ for our sound system. We're trying to add in some special features for our beloved dragon, and we need extra support to make this happen. Our goal is to provide inspiration and up the WOW factor for the attendees of this innovative annual event. Please support this ever-evolving creative dream of ours. Thanks a million. (No puns intended!)
Thank you! --Teddy, Doyle and the whole Gon KiRin crew.
Risks and challenges
We have secured and reserved the trucks, the forklift rental and art handlers to accomplish our trip, still working on the fire permit and Public Liability Insurance policy. We are also looking for volunteers to help us manage the crowd and verify that the participants have signed our release waiver.
Please visit our Facebook page if you would like to volunteer during Artprize...
