About this project

Formed in 1997 and currently one of the most distinctive voices in British dance theatre, Protein uses a blend of original choreography, humour and music to entertain and provoke audiences. Artistic Director Luca Silvestrini's desire to connect theatrical experience with real life stories results in witty shows, both on- and off-stage, that reflect the absurdity in everyday situations and experiences.

"Bouncy, extremely clever and constantly entertaining" The Times

We will be dancing in Hull city centre for two weeks from 19 June 2017 as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Luca and our company dancers will join a cast of 6 Hull-based dance apprentices and 5 musicians to create a new version of our celebrated (In)visible Dancing. On the last day, the cast will be joined by over 100 performers from local groups ranging from kick boxing, to salsa, and from parkour to skateboarders.

This project not only reveals dance in everyday settings but also showcases the talents of tomorrow. It is very important to Protein that all the flavours of dance come together in this outdoor celebration of creativity and passion. The performances will be funny, moving, jaw dropping, acrobatic and simply amazing.

Growing out of everyday street life the street performance will gradually become more visible and culminate in a huge outdoor dance theatre finale on 1 July 2017 in Hull city centre.

"We are really excited to contribute to the UK City of Culture 2017 celebrations in Hull, and to renew ties with the region. We are looking forward to working with Hull's practising artists and with the next generation of creatives in the city." says Luca.

As part of this new commission for Hull UK City of Culture 2017, we are seeking to raise the final £2,000 necessary to create a lasting legacy for the new generation of artists in Hull and the North East.

Let's make it happen!

Our entire budget for the project is £21,500. We still need to raise £2,000 to get great documentation of the project and provide all the artists involved professional images that they will be able to use for their portfolio.

So that the project extends beyond our last performance on Saturday 1st July, help us raise the necessary money to provide all our artists, including Sarah, with fantastic professional images that will help them get more work as performers thereby showing the world that great art and artists live in Hull!

The money raised here will be spent on hiring a professional photographer who will cover the performances and take individual portraits of the Apprentices. All participants will receive photos of the performances.

Every donation matters and none are too small. It takes a village…!

Risks and challenges

If we don't raise these funds we will not manage to offer our team of dancers some of the tools that will truly help them get on with career and fully benefit from their experience with us.
