Forward Base is more than a random collection of scenery products: We set out with a goal of creating a thematic scenery system that would allow the gamer to produce a gaming table that was visually stunning, looked like a believable sci-fi outpost and where the buildings were pre-painted and the resin pre-coloured, to save you time on getting your table up and running and looking great!
So we approached this set with the ideal of having detail scenery at every level, from the microscopes on a laboratory table, through to a collection of buildings which had their own functionalities, but that you could choose how to mix, match and tweak, to suit your needs.
The entire set is compatible with Infinity gaming and 3rd Edition – so certain objects and features are a set size, to give cover to 1 silhouette type but not another, to provide a building structure to hide behind and with scatter to make crossing open spaces as easy or difficult as you chose to make it.
On top of that we wanted to give you, the gamer, the opportunity to make your own add-ons to our scenery: so we are making available all of the scenery-elements that we used ourselves to make Forward Base – lights, doors, windows, hatches, intercoms; all the small components that allow you to change basic structures from boxes into believable buildings…and to thus allow you to alter your own buildings, or to make new ones, to suit yourself.
So Forward Base is far more than a collection of MDF Buildings: it an entire scenery system that allows you to make your own outposts and Forward Operating Bases, to suit your own game scenarios and stories, and one where every piece of scenery and terrain has been created to work with every other piece and all of that to work with Infinity 3rd Edition.
Forward Base is our opportunity to bring everything to market in one go and to give the backer the opportunity to invest in a system that you can assemble and game on without any need to paint, or chose to paint the resin components later, but game with them on the building right away.
Delivery in WAVES?
We have existing obligations to partner companies to produce new products each month - we also have our existing web customers, scratch-builders and non-sci-fi folks... all of whom we can't simply drop to put all of our production capability into a Kickstarter.
As such we have calculated an initial "Wave" of pledges that can be produced within a certain period, without adversely affecting our existing customer base.
WAVE 1 pledges get priority for delivery for March 2015, once those Wave 1 pledges are dispatched it moves to "Wave 2" which has delivery for June 2015.
Will different bundles/pledges be made available?
With so many buildings, interior panels, interior scatters, exterior scatters, scenery and vehicles the potential number of different pledges we could have created was vast.
So to avoid too much confusion we have started with a series of bundles that we think make sense - throughout the KS though we will respond to feedback and wherever possible create new bundles to suit demands.
This is over and above the fact that you will be able to add any individual item as an add-on (and a full add-on list will be following during the KS).
About our MDF:
We use the same laser-grade MDF as many other manufacturers but we pre-process it before we paint both sides of it. This produces a much more even surface and results in a more even and smooth paint coverage, thereby reducing the problems associated with MDF where the surfaces are uneven and the fibrous nature of the MDF itself “pokes through” the MDF resulting in a surface that looks like it is made out of wood pulp.. rather than a smooth, slick sci-fi surface material.
Creating a game environment:
The very best gaming table are not necessarily the best painted; to make a believable
and great looking table all of its parts need to look as though they fit
together, they need to look as though they have come from within the same game universe and that they all "belong together".
This does not mean that everything needs to follow the same design or come from the same manufacturer and can be achieved by simple detailing; a shared logo, a shared style of door, or window can often be enough to tie-together different building designs, making them look as though they are in the same 'verse... the more components that tie-together, the more the table will start to look as though it belongs together.
Gamers often need or want a specific building for a certain game or scenario they have in mind: and that can often mean making it themselves.
To help you achieve this we started out by designing a whole set of building components; doors, windows, lights, power panels, intercoms – a veritable smorgasbord of external detailing parts, from which we then made our buildings.
All of those components will be made available to you as individual scenery detailing packs during the KS, allowing you to build your own structures, to either tie in with our own designs, or for you to scratch-build your own, or adapt other manufactures building to tie in with ours.
Our “In-game company persona” “Phoenix Industries” is
comprised of a number of subsidiary companies, and we use their logos to help
tie our buildings together without everything becoming too similar, so our containers
can have many different logos and the Habitats themselves can be tailored to
suit different purposes under the control of different company titles.
In the higher pledges you get full control over what logos and names you want on each building and even down to names and logos on cargo containers.
Some colours work for MDF laser-etching, some don’t. Some colours suit the appearance of “high-tech” materials, such as advanced plastics, and others don’t. We simply couldn't make every colour available but what we have done is allow you to choose between numbers of different colours for the “Primary colour” on each and every habitat.
During the course of the Kickstarter we will show you building and containers in each of these colours and you can decide what colour you want on your buildings – this colour choice is done after the kickstarter ends, so there is no need to rush or make a choice right now – you have until the post KS survey to see and choose the colours you want.
Can we see the finished buildings?
We have videos of all of the current buildings on our
YouTube channel here:
And here is a short video of a typical 4x4 table using the “Power
Strain +” pledge.
What about Interiors?
We designed the interiors of the buildings to be as modular as possible and we break down the interiors into two areas:
1) Interior Panels:
Interior Panels sit inside the edges of the buildings and consist of resin-panels on MDF supports.
Interior Panels come in 4 types: Large, Medium, Small and Unique.
Any large panel can fit
in any other large panel area, medium in medium and small in small.
Some buildings have unique panels which cannot be swapped out, such as the Bar in the Recreation Habitat, and the Narrow Locker in the Dormitory.
However, we have designed the panels so that you can attach them to their MDF supports and slot them into the buildings, but remove them at will, either for painting or to replace with an alternative panel.
This means that you can tailor the Habitats' Interior to a degree to suit your purposes.
For example: In Habitat 1 you could swap out the Large Accommodation Panel (bunk bed & locker) for a “Personal Station” and then the Large “Lounge & Diner” panel for a “Science Station”.
You will now have turned Habitat 1 from an Accommodation Hab for 1 person, into a Small Science Center.
Similarly a small panel could be a fridge unit, a shower unit, waste-disposal or a ladder to the rooftop.
More details on these options, as well as pictures and renders of each panel, will be available during the KS.
To start with we have selected a "default" set of interior panels for each Habitat so that you have a starting point (See the graphic below "Forward Base - The Buildings") and if you want Interior Panels for that Habitat simply add the price of the add-on to your pledge: you can wait until the backer survey after the KS closes to chose your exact panels, so there is no rush!
2) Interior scatter:
Interior Scatter are items that you can place “free-standing” within the habitats to produce some interior cover for gaming purposes, or just to look cool.
They range from simple packs of tables and chairs, through to bespoke large sets such as the Science Centre set or Medical Set replete with dissection table, bio-scanners, Microscopes and centrifuges. .. or table and chairs to relax in the Recreation center whilst watching the latest Aristeia on the big-screen.
And the Exteriors?
The exteriors of the habitats come with a full set of “Standard
Fittings” which includes, doors, windows, power panels, hatches, air-con units,
light strips and more. These are detailed fully in the graphic “Forward Base –
These fitting are designed to work with the MDF content of the buildings and the two often can be joined together to produce an enhanced effect; f.e.x the doors in the Habitats MDF are printed mirrored - you remove them and glue them to the back of the Resin door - this then gives you exterior detail in the form of the resin and interior detail in the form of the laser-etched MDF - because we mirrored the MDF the back of the door is aligned properly so that all its parts "Make sense" when looking from the front of the door i.e. hinges on the correct side, panels shapes and so forth.
Light-strip fittings also come with acrylic rod included in the kit - this adds a bit of "zing" to the buildings and, combined with the depth of the resin components, really brings the habitats to life and makes them "pop" on the table, transforming them from a 2D looking kit, into truly 3 dimensional structures.
In addition you can purchase extra rooftop items such as “Safety barriers”, Air-Mover and Air-Con ducting and fans, and extra Solar Panel sets. These all help to change the rooftops from dead-zones into good firing positions and means you can tailor the roof-top action to suit your needs.
Helping you to do this are the “roof lugs” which allow you to mount things like the Safety Barriers in place and stop them sliding around, and these also prevent the Dormitory sliding around when placed on top of other Habitats. The ladders latch into the grooves along the ridges of the buildings, fitting between roof-lugs, this stops the ladders sliding of along the building, or away from them - but we've made sure that you can still lift the roofs off even when ladders and safety barriers are fitted in-place.
And, just to show the level of detail we put into the
designs – the roof-top hatches on the Habitats all have matching-location
interior panels – so a panel with a ladder on it leads up to a roof hatch – and
that roof hatch lines-up with a floor-hatch in the dormitory… which has a panel
with a ladder on it that goes up to its own roof-top hatch.
Combined with an exterior ladder this provides you two avenues of reaching the rooftops; interior access or exterior access, adding yet more variation to you gaming choices.
Vehicles & Scatter:
We have four vehicles at the start of the Kickstarter:
1)Fork-Lift: This is a little “teched-up” Fork-Lift that every base needs for moving cargo about and it even includes a clear-cast canopy.
2)Samsara Utility Vehicle: The Samsara was designed by TOPO as a card model some time ago for Infinity. We've taken that design and created a set of modular parts that will allow you to make a range of Samsara Vehicles. All of these are non-military, so there are no weapons systems available for it within the Kickstarter…and the designs will be completed during the course of the Kickstarter.
3)Meerkat Explorer: High-Tech, sleek and sexy 4x4 with a new Sensor Turret for it designed for Exploration role (Turret 3D design is pending)
4)“City Hopper” 7 years ago we kit-bashed a VTOL
hypersonic vehicle that could hop from one city to another, across entire
continents, in an hour or less.
That concept has now been updated by "Irrational Designs" Charles Oines, to a 4-person version; entirely non-military which can be used as an executive travel craft or an Air Ambulance – it’s perfect for going on the rooftop of either Habitat 2 (Med-Lab) or the Security Tower Habitat 7… you can even use it within 3rd edition rules.
We have designed 2 sets of Alien Flora of exceptional detail
as part of an on-going process to produce more organic cover for Infinity
gamers. The existing sets comprise of some “Paradiso Sails” a fungal type of
plant that grows large “sails” from the edge of which it disperses its spores. The
other set is a collection of fallen trees with, vine and leaf cover, odd-fungal and giant fruit pods.
To produce these we have had to develop an entirely new casting technique utilising a specialist resin used within the Film Industry – you will not find anything like these anywhere else… and do not worry about fragility as they are tough (with a capital T).
Crates et al?
And on top of everything else we have the ubiquitous collections of crates and containers that all games need to provide cover – in our case with Phoenix Company logos on the pre-painted containers – and sets of different power devices (all to be charged from our “Power Generator”), bundled into handy pledges for those who want scatter but not buildings.
Stretch Goals and other “stuff”?
We have created this Kickstarter so that as much of it as possible could be shown right from the start - we wanted you to see exactly what was possible with it, without having to rely too much on renders and concepts... and Forward Base is the
culmination of almost 2 years of work to get to this point.
That said we have many ideas and concepts for producing alternative Habitats and other vehicles and scatter. Our initial Stretch-Goals therefore consist of extra components for all building pledges, that add that 'extra-special little touch' to them, such as the awesome looking "Mirrored Solar Panels”, and handy alternatives to construction such as translucent acrylic windows for your habitats.
If we achieve those goals then, yes, there is even more that may be coming to your Forward Base; if you are as excited by this system as much as we are and if we can get your backing to help bring this gaming system to fruition.
So, we hope you like what you see and please see the graphics that follow for pledges of buildings, building & resin bundles, resin-only pledges and other graphics to show precisely what each habitat consists of and what can go with each one.
Savings indicate your potential saving versus intended retail pricing once the Habita systems become commercially available in 2015 (after KS delivery is completed). It is probable, even likely, that the savings will be more as prices will inevitably rise in the meantime.

Risks and challenges
We have worked with other manufacturers to produce products for their own kickstarters and have delivered over 250,000 pieces of resin over the last 12 months and all on-time.
That experience has given us a significant amount of hands-on experience in delivering un-anticipated numbers of products for very successful kickstarters, and given us a grounding in how to plan for and manage kickstarter production.
That experience has resulted in our "wave" approach to the pledges allowing us to better regulate production in distinct periods, but one of our greatest assets is that we produce everything in-house using our own equipment, meaning that we know how much we can produce and in what time.
As such we believe that we have mitigated for most circumstances, including machine failure, as we have redundancy in all areas of the manufacturing processes involved.
Further details are included in the FAQLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
