Pledge Details:

You may pledge for a single Azure Dragon, to be dispatched during the specified month in the pledge.

The Azure Dragon is a resin-cast, multi-part model kit that will come with etch-brass extras (grilles for the main engines, front engines and top exhaust area) as well as a clear-cast resin cockpit canopy.

The Azure Dragon requires assembly and painting.

The Azure Dragon comes with no weapons, although it does have turret-mount discs that weapons can be attached to and under-wing attachment areas for third-party weapons.

Decals may be added to your pledge as an add-on.

You will not be able to add additional Azure Dragon models to your pledge.

Prices: the price varies depending on the dispatch month of each pledge - the longer you are prepared to wait for dispatch the cheaper the pledge.

Please note that models are dispatched over the course of the month assigned to each pledge - they are not all dispatched on the same day. Therefore your pledge can be dispatched to you at any point during that month.

Postage: postage is fixed at £7.50 for the UK and £12.50 for the rest of the world using a Signed-For Service.

"Designed for Infinity " Faction & Unit Decal Sets:

We've got together with a professional decal manufacturer to produce a variety of decal sets for Infinity.

To start with we will be producing sets of small decals designed to be used on Infinity figures, REM, TAGs, bases and scenery.

Each set relates to a specific faction or sectorial, and is divided up into two main sections: one section will have faction or sectorial badges, and the other section will have Unit badges.

The exact number of each faction/sectorial/unit badges varies with each decal set, but the average is as follows;

2mm Faction/Sectorial badges = 100
3mm Faction/sectorial badges = 8
4mm faction/sectorial badges = 7

2mm Unit Badges = 100
3mm Unit Badges = 4-12
4mm Unit Badges = 4-12

As we run through this Kickstarter we will show each of the decal sets individually so that you can see precisely what is on what set e.g. PanOceania Main Faction:

PanOceania Main
PanOceania Main

Numbers of each badge are related to the Unit availability (and/or figure availability) with different numbers of each depending on the AVA in the relevant army list, as well as the availability of figures and poses.

Each Set costs £4.00 during the Kickstarter.

Some examples from a sample set that we had produced before the kickstarter:

ALL of these sets WILL be produced once the main KS goal is reached. There are no stretch goals or targets other than the main funding goal, and you can add as many decal sets to your pledge as you like - there are no restrictions.

What we are doing during the Kickstarter is, as far as possible, finalising the layout and numbers of each badge for each set, and so we will add images of the decal sets as we go through the Kickstarter - but you can add the sets to your pledges whenever you like - you don't need to wait for in the images if you do not want to.

--

Note: If you only want Decals then use the first pledge (decals) and then top-up your pledge amount to cover the cost of the decal sets that you want.

Postage is fixed on the decals-only pledge to:
UK - £1.00p
EU - £2.00p
RoW - £3.00p

--

Production of the decals sets will commence as soon as the survey has been completed; this may be before the stated dispatch date (of November) and will certainly be before many of the Azure Dragon pledges are dispatched.

(As such, if you have an Azure Dragon pledge and you want to get your decals ASAP, then simply add the postage cost for the decals set to your main pledge and we will then send you your decals as soon as they are ready.
N.B.: your Azure Dragon decals will always dispatch with your Azure Dragon pledge)

With the Sectorial Badges we have added in (where there is space) additional graphics that represent the sectorial army, typically numeric and lettering elements, graphics associated with the sectorial and images from Corvus Belli painted figures.

These will, therefore, vary from sectorial to sectorial - images of the other factions and sectorials will follow during the Kickstarter.

How we made the Azure Dragon
How we made the Azure Dragon

How we made the Azure Dragon:

We have the fantastic opportunity to be able to create vehicles for Corvus Belli’s “Infinity the Game” and within that license to be able to create at least 1 “Landing craft” for each faction within the game.

As part of our regular work we search for concepts by artists on the Internet and elsewhere to pull from the fabulous wealth of artistic talent that there is in the world, and to see whether we can work with them to produce something worthy of the depth and characteristic design elements of each of the major faction within the Infinity Universe.

Some years ago we found a fantastic concept by Vitalii Smyk and sought and were given permission by him to transform his concept art into a physical model. Consultation with Corvus Belli then led us to the conclusion that with some modifications this would make an ideal Landing Craft for the YuJing faction.

Original Concept by Vitalii Smyk
Original Concept by Vitalii Smyk

The Concept was modified by our regular freelancer Patrick Soeder, going through a number of iterations:

Firstly we knew that we needed to remove external weaponry and add-in enough carrying capacity to work with the 3rd Edition rules for landing craft.

To do this, we had to add extra room to the central portion of the concept and a system to allow troops and TAGs access to and from the interior….

The new concepts showed us that the design as it stood had to be changed as there was not enough room in the central hull area to add doors - without making the ship substantially larger - a move that would cause both manufacturing and pricing issues and would generate a need to overhaul and downsize the entire cockpit area: an area and design that we considered very significant to the overall look and feel of the design.

The solution was to raise the wing and move the engine intakes even higher on the body...

Changes to original design
Changes to original design

This change then gave us room to look at different types of doors for the cargo area:

We had wanted to have some form of hinged physical doors, but this became impractical in the design (nowhere to open the doors into, especially when the under-wing area had weapons attached to it), so we transformed the doors into a more futuristic systems that would “collapse back” into the cargo door frame – leaving an open cargo area.

It was immediately apparent that the open cargo area was the best solution and allowed for simple placing and movement of figures for gaming (Not to mention an ideal area to slot the odd door-gunner for those so inclined!)

Once we were all happy with the concept we then had to work out how it could be manufactured – so even before going to 3D design we worked out the various sections that would be required – and then check to see their viability for casting in resin:

Suggested cutting areas
Suggested cutting areas

At this point, we handed the concepts over to Questron, a specialist 3D design studio with some fabulous artists working for them… they converted it rapidly into 3D:

...and then once happy with the Renders we had to move into precisely where to ‘cut’ the 3D parts that would allow us to have the parts printed and later moulded:

After checking and verifying the parts, we then needed to size the model to make sure it fit in with the Infinity figures…And at this point, it was ready to go to 3D print.

Sizing the Dragon
Sizing the Dragon

That isn’t the end of the story though… as we’re not allowed to produce “Weaponised” vehicles we had to develop an alternative to the front weapons on the chin turret. We did not want to prevent the end user adding weapons though, so we retained room under the wings for mounting missiles and suchlike, and have also kept the front Chin-turret, albeit without the actual guns.. but including two blanking plates (the blue parts on the video)

(There is nothing to stop 3rd party manufacturers for making their own weapons kits for the landing craft, and kits such as the 1/72 Valkyrie Macross parts set are also superb for that) .

In addition, we wanted a specific sensor ball for the “Recon” version that ours is – and Questron quickly came up with that for us:

This means that you have two different chin-turrets in the kit - the single Sensor for the "Recon" version (shown above), and then the alternate chin turret which allows fitting of weapons which is seen on the video.

Production testing:

Once the 3D parts were completed and delivered we then had to check them and clean them. All 3D printing processes (currently) leave surface artefacts on the prints, ranging from tiny cross-hatching to staggered lines from the shifting z-axis. The severity of these artefacts varies by type of print, material and other matters, the end result meaning that hand-finishing the parts is generally required.

This is laborious but straightforward, although some parts required panel lines and other elements to be re-done by hand. The Cockpit canopy, in particular, required a lot of attention as this was going to be cast in clear resin and needed to be exceptionally smooth - in all this part took around 20 hours just of smoothing, moving from 1500 grit paper down to 12000 polishing cloths, and then another round of using silk.

Test moulds and casts:

We then had to produce test moulds and casts for every part. These were done early on in the "cleaning" process so that we could do test casts to ensure parts fitted together, and to get an early version off to be painted. The model in the video and stills is done from these early parts and the actual production parts are cleaner (although it is exceptionally difficult to spot anything on the pre-production parts anyway).

The other major reason for these early moulds and casts is to test weights and work out prices - the number of moulds, time to make each mould, ease of casting, reliability of casting and so on and so forth. This process also tells us any changes that need to be made to either the moulds themselves, parts or the casting process itself.

Risks and challenges

Why Kickstarter?

Firstly; we need to fund the decals production - these are the new digital UV-print type that come pre-cut, so in usage, they are essentially the same as traditional model-kit professional decals that you do not need to cut out of a full sheet, but come as individual decals… However, done with the sooper-dooper new digital UV systems rather than the traditional and more expensive screen-printing process.

Whilst these offer more choices and lower volumes than screen-printing they are still, relatively, expensive and we're looking at funding not just the decals for the Dropship, but also "shoulder patches" for figures, REMs and TAGs, as well as the generic decals set for the Azure Dragon (English and Chinese) and then the Yu Jing Badges plus the sectorial badges (for the Azure Dragon - so IS, JSA and White Banner) {as shown in the video}.

Successfully doing so will mean that we also open up decals for other factions, unit badges and sectorial via the same decal manufacturer... and also professional decals for our other vehicles and scenery... essentially it opens the doors to lots of decal-type shinies (Think Police car, Hopper, Super-Hawk and so forth).

Secondly - we need to carefully manage the numbers and delivery dates on the dropship production... Kickstarter is ideal for this and it also acts as a public record for both numbers and delivery.

Thirdly - it gives us a "template" for moving into production of the other dropships:

For the Azure Dragon we funded the 3d work and 3d prints ourselves, but when you're looking at £3K + before we even get prototype parts, these vehicles are expensive to produce, especially for tiny companies like ourselves.

If this KS is successful, it gives us the template to move promptly on to the other factional designs, particularly those for which we have existing concepts, where we will only have concepts and renders to show and no physical models.

However, we will be using the same designers and printers as we have with the Azure Dragon {and then our moulding and casting services} so you will know the quality of the final products even though we *only* have renders to show for each dropship as we move forward (with the possible exception of Ariadna landing craft which is currently being hand-made)

Why so few production casts?

We want to produce more dropships "as fast as we can" but we have to be able to deliver on time. We don’t want to "fill the system up" with Azure Dragons and not be able to do any "Roc's" (f.ex).
So we've limited the numbers not just for KS delivery reasons but also to allow us room to overlap production of new dropships - meaning that we can start producing other dropships before finishing delivery of all Dragons.

To ensure we can do that we have had to put an extremely strict limit on the numbers so that we can keep parts of our production open, and clear, for the other dropships.
Fourthly: We need the funds for production – Yes, we’ve already financed the most expensive elements, but there’s still a big chunk of work and materials that are still needed to go forward.

Delays and Problems:

We learned a lot from our first Kickstarter (Forward Base) which is only just now being completed through July and August this year.

Our second Kickstarter (GameBox) was, by comparison, delivered entirely on schedule... because of those lessons learned.

Primarily that was down to strict limits on numbers, not adding in new pledges once the totals were met, and by using everything we learned from Forward Base to better predict our capabilities, staff, equipment and so forth.
