My name is Eric Armusik and I am a classical figurative painter from Pennsylvania. When I was 20 years old, I picked up a copy of Dante’s Inferno and it had a profound affect in shaping my work. Today, I’m known worldwide for my dramatic, emotional and thought provoking work that draws it’s narratives from mythology and history. As many of you know, last year, I was commissioned to do a large painting of the seven deadly sins for a very important client. While painting, I began thinking about Dante’s Inferno and wondered why no skilled artist of the past ever took on the challenge of painting this incredible epic in its entirety. After much thought, I decided that I was at the point in my career where something of this magnitude was not only realistic but necessary.
After intense discussions with my wife, I reached out to several world-renowned Dante scholars to help me with this project. I was excited to hear that Professor Christopher Kleinhenz from the university of Wisconsin was more than willing to not only guide me in the creation of these compositions, but was also enthusiastic about narrating a comprehensive book once the paintings were finished.
In the end, I will complete 40 4ft x 5ft paintings carefully illustrating the dramatic poem. In order to take on a project of this magnitude, I need financial backing. Over the next 2 years, I will be unable to take many commissions due to the size of this project. I will need painting materials, 40 large aluminum panels and a way to supplement my income for that time.
For this I will need your help. I’ve set up a campaign here on Kickstarter which will offer numerous incentives for you from prints of my paintings to signed copies of the upcoming book.
With your support and your sharing this video on social media, you will enable me to recreate one of the most important literary works of all time. I am grateful for your support and I am anxious to embark on this amazing journey.
Risks and challenges
Painting 40 - 48" x 60" panels in just under 24 months is going to be a rollercoaster ride. Not only will it be a lot of real estate to paint during that time but each canto will be ornate and complex in its own way. Fortunately I've began the process of working on the compositions weeks ago. Professor Christopher Kleinhenz, one of the world's leading Dante scholars, has offered immeasurable assistance to prepare me for what lies ahead. I expect there will be many challenges but I've proven over the years to be quite resourceful when it comes to delivering what I promise. I look forward to the challenge, the late nights and long days ahead.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
