About

The ThinkKit is a card deck of classroom techniques for students (aged 7 to 17) working on creative problems in small groups.

ThinkKit is great for those occasions when you want students to be coming up with creative ideas - from ways to solve a real world challenge to interesting topics to write a story about. Rather that working by themselves, ThinkKit is about working creatively in groups.

Designed for teachers (and adventurous parents) the deck is made up of 32 large format cards, nice and thick to survive in the classroom. Each card explains a particular exercise or tool in language suitable for confident young readers.

There are lots of different group tools and techniques in the deck. These include;

  • EXPLORATION: Things you can do to gather inspiration before you start coming up with ideas - like conducting 'expert interviews' or making a mindmap
  • IDEATION: Ways to 'think laterally' and get to interesting and unexpected ideas - like reversing an unbreakable rule, or thinking about how someone completely different might approach the problem
  • EVOLUTION: Tricks to take ideas you have come up with and evolve them - from combining ideas to making a particular aspect of the idea much bigger or smaller
  • SELECTION: Different ways for the group to select the ideas to progress with - you might hold an idea tournament, or have each group member invest one hundred imaginary dollars across the ideas.

There are also cards that explain key concepts to students - including the process of thinking creatively and some of the social psychology behind group dynamics. Finally, we've included a couple of cards for teachers that outline how the ThinkKit might best be used in the classroom.

The big challenge in making the ThinkKit turned out to be cost effective printing - particularly because we wanted nice thick cards. Rather than compromising and producing flimsy cards that wouldn't last in the classroom, we decided to run this Kickstarter.

Based on quotes from potential printing companies in China, using Kickstarter, and sending copies of the ThinkKit out to our backers, our project model looks like this.

These ratios are based on us hitting our target - things change a little bit as we go beyond that.

One of the things we are most excited about is creating beautifully illustrated and designed cards. We find that craft can make so much difference in the way students interact with resources.

To bring the tools and techniques to life, we will be working with Roni, an Indonesian illustrator with a beautiful, playful sense of character. You can see how well he transformed our scribbles and references into charming illustrations on our last project.

These illustrations are from a similar resource we produced earlier this year for our course on 'Design Thinking with Kids'. We learnt a lot about what works in a printed resources, and how to produce eye-catching work - lessons that we will be putting to use in the ThinkKit.

You can read more about this project (and even buy a copy of the resource) at http://pen.schoolhouse.edu.au/design-thinking/

Which brings us to the first of our stretch goals. We think that if you're keen on collaborative creativity then you'll love design thinking too. So if we hit $10,000 we'll throw in a copy of our design thinking resource for every backer that we're mailing a physical copy of the deck to.

Help us get to our stretch goal and you will get your hands on a guidebook and design thinking map.

With the Kickstarter closing in December, we will be doing final art for the cards over the Christmas break. That will allow us to get artwork off to China in January, with a month turn around time. All of which means we aim to be sending decks out in the first few weeks of Term 1 of the Australian school year.

Risks and challenges

When it comes to offshore printing, we're across the possible challenges, and how to avoid the pitfalls. We'll be on our toes - and we'll share that journey. But we recognise that there is an inherent risk in this part of the process.

We feel very comfortable about the illustrations, having worked with Roni in the past. Should anything go awry there we would need to source an alternative illustrator.

We have also kept international currency fluctuations in mind - we have included contingency that will accommodate that, barring major international finance catastrophes!
