About this project
JOIN ARCHIE COMICS IN BUILDING A NEW RIVERDALE! WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR SUPPORT TO HELP EXPAND ON THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW ARCHIE #1 WITH THREE NEW MUST-HAVE TITLES. BECOME A PART OF THE MOST EXCITING, VIBRANT RELAUNCH IN COMIC BOOK HISTORY!
The world took notice when we announced that we would—for the first time in 75 years—relaunch Archie with a new #1 issue. With your help, we can build off that huge anticipation and expand the new Riverdale to include three new series crafted by the biggest names in comics: JUGHEAD (from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist TBD), BETTY AND VERONICA (from writer/artist Adam Hughes) and LIFE WITH KEVIN (from writer/artist Dan Parent and inker J. Bone)—crafted by the biggest names in comics, from the company that has built a reputation as the most daring, progressive and fan-friendly place in the business. This is your chance to have a hand in building a new Riverdale—for everyone!
We're not Marvel or DC. That's a good thing. Archie Comics does not benefit from a deep-pocketed corporate parent. We're the scrappy, quick-moving and progressive publisher that is never afraid of trying new things. From the debut of Kevin Keller to the Death of Archie to AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE to day-and-date digital, the company has been known for one thing: keeping readers on their toes with daring initiatives and compelling characters.
But it all starts with the story. While many of our events and publishing moves have garnered worldwide attention, they all stand as great works of fiction—from the wedding of Kevin Keller to the Death of Archie to recent successes like AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE and CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA, fans have come to expect a level of quality that we are honored and always eager to meet and exceed. Which is why we need your help.
For the first time in 75 years, we will be launching a new ARCHIE #1—from the jaw-dropping creative team of writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, Thrillbent Comics) and artist Fiona Staples (Saga). The new series reveals the never-before-told origin of Archie and his friends while reintroducing the cast for the modern reader. It also harkens back to the timeless elements of the character that have always resonated: comedy, friendship and Riverdale.
But why stop there?
Riverdale is for Everyone: Jughead, Betty and Veronica, Life with Kevin.
The response to the new Archie #1 was massive. Fans are ready and eager to read Archie's new adventures. Why? Readers are hungry for stories featuring these iconic characters from top comic book creators while still retaining the comedic and family-friendly elements that have sustained the brand for decades.
It got us thinking that perhaps there was room in the crowded comic book landscape for the kind of comics we want to publish—funny, engaging and emotional stories from the best creators in comics featuring the most recognizable characters ever. But we can't do it alone!
Here's what we'd like to do: Launch a new, ongoing JUGHEAD series from writer/artist Chip Zdarsky. You read that right: Archie's best pal, written by Chip Zdarsky. As you all know, Chip is the artistic visionary behind Image's hit Sex Criminals series and the writer of Marvel's excellent Howard the Duck. How perfect would it be to have a monthly JUGHEAD comic written by Chip? With your help, we'd make this happen, and consult with Chip on getting the perfect artist to bring his vision to life.
Archie? Check. Archie's best friend? Check. What's missing? Betty and Veronica, of course! The world of Riverdale isn't complete without its two most engaging and awesome characters, girl-next-door Betty Cooper and posh socialite Veronica Lodge. While they complete the world's most iconic love triangle, they're much more than just foils for Archie—and merit their own book. We've enlisted legendary writer/artist Adam Hughes to not only write but draw their adventures in a new, ongoing BETTY AND VERONICA series. While this book will fit squarely in the new Riverdale universe, you can expect some fun adventures and an engaging story of friendship and the challenges of being a teen from one of the most unique voices in comics.
If you ask our Publisher/CEO Jon Goldwater what the turning point was for Archie as a company in the last six years, he'll point to one thing: the introduction of Kevin Keller. Kevin reinvigorated the company and showed fans and longtime readers that this was a new Archie Comics, ready to present the world as it is today. So, it's fitting that we announce a new, ongoing Kevin series, LIFE WITH KEVIN, as part of the expanded line. Written and drawn by Kevin's creator, Dan Parent, with inks from the legendary J. Bone, LIFE WITH KEVIN zooms ahead to showcase the adventures of a 21-year-old Kevin Keller as he explores the big city with his BFF Veronica. A coming-of-age story that is both heartfelt and funny, LIFE WITH KEVIN reintroduces one of Archie's most popular characters in a new setting with a whole new cast of characters—plus a handful of familiar faces!
Who We Are and What We're About
The foundation for the new Riverdale was laid six years ago when Jon Goldwater stepped into the offices of Archie Comics. He found a brand that was in stasis—and faced with questions like "They still publish Archie?" and "Are the comics set in the ’50s?" He set out to do what no one thought he could: reinvigorate a company that had been, for all intents and purposes, trapped in amber—a relic of the past.
Jon began the long process of dusting off Archie and his friends to get to the core of what made these characters interesting—and relevant. With the help of the legendary Editor-in-Chief Victor Gorelick, Archie President Mike Pellerito, Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and the diverse and talented creators Archie employs, Jon began chipping away at not only the content by making it more vibrant and engaging, but the perception of Archie as a retro, nostalgia brand. The list of accomplishments reads like a resume covering decades, but in reality only sum up the last five or so years: Kevin Keller's debut, LIFE WITH ARCHIE, the Wedding of Kevin and Clay, the Death of Archie, AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, Day-and-Date Digital, an expanded and engaging line of digests, Dark Circle Comics, CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA and so much more. Archie is, truly, everywhere.
All of these accomplishments have been building to this moment and we're ready to take Archie Comics to the next level—by joining forces with our fans and telling great stories by some of the best creators in the business. We know we can get there together and continue to provide everyone with the best comics possible.
By the Numbers
Archie isn't owned by a corporate behemoth. We're more like David, fighting against Goliath. The reality is that we're not Marvel or DC. We see this as a good thing. We move quickly. We take risks and we are not beholden to any paper-pushers with a profit margin to meet. The only people we answer to are you, our fans, which we love.
But the reality of publishing is what it is, and if we want to expand and bring you more of a good thing—which is what this Kickstarter is all about—we need funding. We want to bring you more great comics by the best and brightest, featuring your favorite characters. But we can't do it alone.
We're supremely excited to launch a new ARCHIE #1. We're just as excited to partner with you, our fans, to help build a new, exciting Riverdale. We're handing you the keys to the town and we're excited to tell some amazing stories. We hope you can join us!
Risks and challenges
We have approved pitches and outlines for the three new series we've listed above. We're also in the process of filling out the creative teams. These books are in the pipeline and will debut over the next six months—you may even see some pop up in monthly solicitations to comic book shops. With your help, these projects will go from "theoretical" to certain.
We can't do this alone. Even with an effective publicity and social media machine, word of mouth is important to getting people on board with this important initiative. We're looking to you—our amazing fans—to be complete collaborators on this journey. That means we'd be honored if you'd plug the Kickstarter even if you can't contribute. Be it Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, YouTube or whatever new platform is born in the next few weeks, help us spread the word: we're building a new Riverdale, and we want all of you to join us!
We've decided to offer a wide array of rewards—some are more immediately gratifying than others in terms of how quickly we can get them to you. Specific issues are tied to the release dates for the books, and we will do our best to keep you, our awesome backers, informed as we go. If you've selected a high-end, interactive reward that includes you being drawn into a comic book, we will be in touch directly and provide you with a unique timeline of delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
