In the world of the pulp magazines, the name of Walter Baumhofer has always resonated with a solemn and respectful gravitas. His masterful cover paintings from the golden era of Dime Detective, Dime Mystery, Dime Western, Adventure, Pete Rice, Doc Savage, and The Spider were among the most iconic images in pulp art history. The design and execution of his work combined an impressive combination of sensational brushwork with a theatrical flair for composing striking scenes of intriguing villains, rugged heroes, and steadfast women. His creative ambitions elevated him from the low-paying field of the pulp magazines into the respectable and higher-paying realm of the slick magazine industry. When he quit the pulps, he left behind a legacy of innovative design and high standards that the next generation would struggle in his wake to attain. Although he is renowned for his paintings of pulp magazine covers, the actual number of years he worked in the field is but one chapter in a lifelong history of creative accomplishments. That full story has never been told—until now.
Pulp and illustration art historian David Saunders has written an insightful biography, chronicling the life and work of this influential artist. This is the consummate reference book on the life of Walter Baumhofer, filled with over 300 reproductions of original art, rare proof sheets, working drawings, reference photos, as well as historic family photos.
This book will be limited to 1000 copies. It is 224 pages, 9”x12”, full-color on premium glossy stock, hardbound with dust jacket. Every copy pre-ordered through Kickstarter will include a signed and numbered bookplate.
By pledging through Kickstarter you will receive a signed and numbered copy of the book for only $40 delivered anywhere in the U.S. (Early Birds can get the book for only $35, if you act fast!) The regular unsigned edition available after this Kickstarter campaign ends, will cost $44.95 plus postage.
Unlike previous titles from The Illustrated Press, this book will not be offered through Amazon, so it will never be offered at a discounted price (unless you can find a "used" copy.) If you want this book new, you will have to buy it directly from The Illustrated Press. In other words, don't worry about funding the book for $40 and then turning around and seeing it listed on Amazon later for $26. That is not going to happen.
Every edition of this book sold on Kickstarter will feature a full color bookplate glued to the front endpapers, signed and numbered by David Saunders. Your number will be assigned in the order received, so pledge your support early to secure a low number!
We're also offering a Special Edition version of the book, limited to 100 copies. These are presented in a red cloth slipcase with white stamped lettering, signed and numbered with a bookplate design unique to the Special Edition. We're also including one black and white ORIGINAL 8x10 photograph from Baumhofer's studio. This reference photograph was personally shot and developed by Baumhofer, and was part of his "morgue" of reference images that he used to create his paintings. (Every photograph is completely different; we'll be choosing the most interesting photographs to include with the book. The sample shown below indicates the general look of the photograph you will receive.) This version also ships with a copy of Illustration magazine #44, the Walter Baumhofer Special Edition, signed by David Saunders.
The author David Saunders is the son of legendary illustrator Norman Saunders (the artist behind Mars Attacks, Wacky Packs, and much more). David has written two books for The Illustrated Press, the first on NORMAN SAUNDERS, and the second on H.J. WARD. He has also contributed numerous articles to Illustration magazine on such artists as Ernest Chiriacka, Rafael DeSoto, John W. Scott, Frederick Blakeslee, Rudolph Belarski, Gloria Stoll, Allen Anderson, and others. His website, www.pulpartists.com, chronicles the life and work of artists who worked for the pulp magazine industry.
In addition to his work as an historian, David is also a fine artist with works in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; The Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; The New Museum, NY; The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden; and many more.
The Illustrated Press has been publishing Illustration magazine since October of 2001, and has produced 45 issues to date. In addition, the publisher has produced monographs on the illustrators REYNOLD BROWN, NORMAN SAUNDERS, and H.J. WARD, as well as the book MASTERS OF AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION—41 ILLUSTRATORS AND HOW THEY WORKED.
Publishing art books has become an increasingly risky business. They're complicated to assemble and expensive to make, and they can take up a lot of space in the garage when they don't sell. I want to produce the right number of copies, and using Kickstarter enables us to gauge the demand for these kinds of books, and to adjust our print runs accordingly. By "pre-ordering" this book, you're helping to relieve some of the pressure and risk of publishing this book, and you're helping to finance the project from the ground up. Without YOUR generous support, this book will not happen.
Risks and challenges
The Baumhofer book is completely designed and is ready to go to press. Having already produced dozens of magazines and four hardcover books in China, there are relatively few risks associated with this project. All we need are some generous backers, and the book will be released in no time. We hope you will back our project and spread the word to other illustration fans everywhere.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
