About this project
Looking and seeing = the soul of the visual artist. Regardless of the medium ~ it is in the time spent in understanding what one is actually seeing that allows for that information to be translated into some other form.
Over the past several years, I have worked as a graphic designer, a photographer, a knitwear designer, and goldsmith. I have created ikebana installations, painted murals in restaurants, and produced entire fashion collections that have been shown in NYC. Whenever I look at a potential job opportunity, the employer inevitably asks for my credentials and whether or not I have performed these tasks before. The heart of my answer is always the same. Regardless of whether I have done something before or not, I believe that can do it! If it involves design, I can design it - or - I can creatively find a place to offer new perspective. The root of this confidence stems from my deep understanding of design and aesthetics. Whether or not I have designed a shoe does not matter, the fact that I understand what a shoe is, what the function of a shoe is, and how a shoe can make one feel gives me the basis for designing something like a shoe. Then, because I understand design, I have that knowledge I bring to the project as well. Finally, understanding the human form gives me that final edge that makes my designs not just something that look good, but something that makes sense to the body, the mind, and tangible reality.
For the next 52 weeks, it is my goal to focus on that looking. To hone my skills as an artist and my perception of life. To really see the line, the contour, the shadows and depth of the human form. I believe that through doing this exercise, what I can offer to clients in the form of design will only be improved and heightened.
By the end of this 52 week in depth study, it is my intention to create one final folio of my work. It will contain 52 drawings, be hand-bound in a traditional manner with ribbon tie, and organized in a chronological progression so that the development of my skill is evident in every line and shape on the paper. It will include drawings taken from a variety of different timed poses along with some that will be hand colored in the rendering process.
The funds raised through Kickstarter will offset the cost of sessions with a live model along with some minor supply requirements of paper and drawing tools.
In short, whether it is the design for a chair that we sit on, the couch that we lounge in, the lighting in a dining room, the plate we eat off of.... whether it is the robe we wear, or the sheet we lie on.... the necklace that cascades over our collar bone or the earrings that dangle with each turn of the head... regardless of what I am designing, the heart of that design is the human form. Our bodies inspire design, dictate design and can transform design.
I hope that you will allow me to continue this journey into looking and really seeing. I thank you in advance for your kind support and generosity!
