Sculptures that tell stories about girls who kick ass - an exploration of girl's culture and gender roles.

Alright!

This project got fully funded in less than 24 hours, which is mind blowingly amazing! So here's what I want to do next - let's keep this going. All additional funds raised will be used for materials to do a free workshop with underprivileged and at risk girls. The more money I raise, the more girls I can take on. I am currently working on the details, but I'd like to offer a workshop for girls to tell their own stories using writing and clay. I will keep you all updated as this idea solidifies, but one way or another, I'm going to do this! Please keep sharing the link and telling your friends about this project. Let's get more Girl Stories out into the world!

Hello! My name is Lori Leaumont, and I am a ceramic artist, a girl, a geek, and a mom.

For the past couple years, I have been making a series of work that I call my Doll Jar series. Inspired by Matryoshka dolls, Kokeshi dolls, and custom vinyl art toys, as well as feminism and girl's culture, these fully functional jars have taken the shape of rabbit girls, grumpy girls, and fully raging goddesses of death and destruction.

With your help, I'd like to take my work to the next level, and do something a little bit different. For my Kickstarter project, I want to create a new body of work that I call Girl Stories. I love a good story in any media, but I've never attempted to tell one of my own. I realize that most of my favorite video games, comics, books, and movies from childhood all have male protagonists that are iconic, cool, strong, clever, brave, or kind. Where are all the girls? Where's the female equivalent of Calvin and Hobbes? Super Mario Bros? Ness from Earth Bound? All we get is a nondescript girl in a pink dress and a hair bow??? UNFAIR!

My thought is simple. If we want better stories about girls and women, we've got to make them ourselves.

I want to create 12 new doll jar sculptures, inspired by girls, feminism, my life, and geek and pop culture - objects that tell stories. With each work, I will write and illustrate a short story to go with it. The story, drawn and written on a length of paper, will be kept inside each jar, living inside like a written soul. It is my hope that these doll jars will tell stories that will excite and inspire other girls and women like myself, who may not have thought they had anything to say.

In order to do this project, I need your support! Backing this project will not only help me to buy the supplies I need to create these pieces; it tells me that you believe in me, and that this project is worthwhile. Please check out the rewards on the right (which are awesome, by the way), and give a little, or give a lot!

I want to make artwork that leaves a mark on this world. I want to tell stories through my work that empower girls and women. I want the world to know that I have a story to tell, and it's real, and it's strong, and it's uniquely and inherently my own. Finally, I want to do work I can be proud of, so that my daughter can grow up proud of her mom, and proud of who she is as a girl.

Everyone has a story worth telling, if we only have the courage to speak.

To find out more about me, my awesome daughter Maddy, and my work, please visit my blog at http://15paintedcups.blogspot.com. I will be posting updates of my work in progress there, along with sneak peeks at the rewards and snippets of my stories. I hope you enjoy following along with me!

Thanks for your support, beautiful people:)

  • I am working on getting working prototypes made of each reward level so that you have an idea of what you're getting. Because of the nature of this project, all the available rewards will be revealed as I make them over the next few months. So consider it a nice surprise!

  • The jars range in height from 10-14" and are roughly 5-6" wide.

  • They don't ALL look angry, but I admit there are quite a few with grumpy or scary expressions on their faces. I'm really drawn to these expressions because I feel that displaying emotions like anger or sadness are somehow considered unacceptable for girls. I think girls need to know that all of their emotions are normal and exceptable, and that getting angry or sad does not make you bad or unlikeable. Most of the images girls see of women are women smiling, and being nice and pleasant. Girls, like any human being, are much more complex than that, so I think it's good to see more images of girls and women that reflect that.

  • First of all, no pledge is too small! Dollars add up, so it that's all you can give, please do! Second, Kickstarter doesn't charge backers until this project ends at 8pm EST on the 31st. So you can pledge any time, and your account won't be charged until then. If you're not sure how much to give, pledge a $1. You can change your pledge and reward selection any time between now and the 31st.
