About

HOP TO IT!  HELP US TO GIVE HOPE TO HURTING KIDS.

Serving in an urban school district for ten years gave me a glimpse of the desperation and hopelessness many children experience as they struggle against poverty and violence every day.

In addition to learning about the challenges children are faced with daily, I also learned that they loved stories.  So, I began writing stories about them, for them.

Last fall LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE was published and I've been giving away copies to kids ever since.

This is one of my favorite students of all time, Tyari, and me. Tyari was the inspiration for the Bonnie character in LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE. Tyari was thrilled to receive her copy when we went out for lunch recently.

Isn't this young lady gorgeous!  She's Alexis, Tyari's cousin.  Alexis and Tyari went to the same middle school where my son was teaching this year.  Last fall, their school was forced into a hard lockdown due to a gun threat.

Not long after the lockdown, Alexis spoke with their principal about ways they could help end the violence. Tragically, her own life was snatched by violence shortly after the holidays.

This little guy with the sad eyes is Isaiah. Isaiah was in my 3rd grade class last year.

Part of the reason Isaiah looks so sad is because only a couple of weeks earlier, his beautiful little cousin, Angel, was gunned down while buying bubble gum with her dad only a few blocks from where they lived.

I don't believe it was a coincidence that my visit to Isaiah's 4th grade class was scheduled prior to Angel's death. God knew these precious youngsters would be even hungrier for hope, and struggling even more to understand the effects of poverty and violence on their young lives.

I wish you could have seen their faces when they were given their own books with stories of love, hope and forgiveness. More classroom visits are scheduled this spring but we need your help to make sure we have books for each child.

Don't let these beautiful smiles fool you! For this hour, these sweet children were safe in a church, had a hot meal, listened to a story, and got a copy of a book to call their own. I was amazed when I learned about the trials and tragedies in their young lives.

Later this year, we will be returning to Denver to visit with more kids in urban multi-unit housing. Your help will allow us to continue giving children like these something to call their own, and give them hope in knowing there are people who care about them.

WHY KICKSTARTER FUND-RAISING?  LET'S TAKE A LOOK.

LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE is a self-published book, about kids for kids. Self-publishing means an up-front investment by the author, including the purchase of books for distribution, sold or given away.

To date, my husband and I have purchased all books, and financed all visits with children.  It is a tremendous blessing that we are starting to get more book visit requests, however, personal funding for books to give to kids is limited, and books on hand are quickly dwindling.

About 90% of Kickstarter funds will be used to purchase 100 - 125 books to give at risk kids during a story time with the author (me!).

Administrative costs, such as Kickstarter and handling fees are necessary expenses which will require about 10% of funding.

BOTTOM LINE: Kickstarter funding will purchase enough books for 100-125 kids desperately needing a token of hope.

Risks and challenges

The greatest risk is that this project of hope will not succeed in generating full funding. The fields are ripe with opportunities to reach out to at risk kids who desperately need to hear that someone sees them in their pain and cares about them. Current requests exceed number of books available for giving to children.

Spending a few minutes reading a story and chatting with children is a valuable, but fleeting, token of care and concern. Giving each child a book of his/her own provides him/her with a tangible reminder of that care, and can be a source of hope.

As strong as my calling is to reach out to at risk kids, I need partners to make it happen, PARTNERS LIKE YOU! The journey of hope can only continue with your help.

Another risk, in addition to project funding success, is availability of opportunities. There has already been one opportunity which was denied by the venue administrators. The experience has been the impetus for compiling a digital portfolio, an accountability component.

The portfolio is designed to communicate vision, document experiences with children, and promote new opportunities. It can be shared in person or remotely with prospective outreach partners.

We need your support to bridge the gap between a message of love, hope and forgiveness and at risk kids who need to hear it most.
