About this project
Setlr is a translation app with a difference: It offers super-fast human translation that's powered by your local bilingual community.
All you need to do is type, paste, take a photo or upload your file for translation and our huge community of bilingual translators will be ready and waiting to start translating.
It’s that simple!
When you submit a text, individuals, tens, or even hundreds of bilinguals can work on your text at the same time so you can literally watch as your translation is completed in real-time by the community.
The community also work together to up-vote the best translations, so as well as being super-fast, you can be sure you're getting a locally sensitive translation you can trust.
The app is FREE to download.
When you’re looking for a translation, nothing can beat the human touch.
Machine translation services might give you quick answers, but they often get the context and meaning completely wrong, leaving you with a translation that might not be saying what you think it is!
At Setlr, we’re on a mission to deliver human quality translation at machine speed!
More than half of the world’s population is bilingual – that’s around 4 billion people!
We're on a mission to empower them, and build an app that provides local, human driven translation that people can really rely on when they need help to cross the language barrier in their everyday lives.
Ever wondered why machine translation sucks? Check out this brilliant video from Tom Scott...
With Setlr, the possibilities are endless.
Our app is needed to help schools, councils, expats, relocated professionals, retirees, students, travellers, cross-border businesses, websites, bloggers, social media marketers and more!
We want to help everyday people to translate:
- Lesson plans
- Social media posts
It's also incredibly useful for those situations where you need to talk to someone in real-time, like:
- Talking to a foreign local
- Talking to a foreign tradesperson (plumber, electrician etc.)
- Getting urgent help while abroad
Another goal is helping schools to educate foreign students who don't speak enough of the local language to make their lessons meaningful. Many students spend hours sitting around because they don't understand the study material or the lesson plan. Schools can't afford professional translation and machine translation just isn't good enough. We want to give students and teachers a way to communicate.
Short translation takes our community seconds (they're always online)!
Regardless of what you need translated; Setlr can offer you translations you can trust.
Setlr strives to provide clients with a truly local translation - no matter where they are in the world.
That’s why we’ve built our global community of translators to help bring them affordable and reliable translations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We work hard to make translating fun for our bilingual community! We also believe in rewarding our best community members for a job well done. As translators work on Setlr, they can build up their translation experience and boost their earnings as they help more clients across the language barrier. Our community of bilinguals can learn, help others and earn at the same time!
Having been lucky enough to have spent 5 years as a expat, I can’t count the number of times that I needed a trustworthy translator.
Luckily I could lean on the bilingual friends I’d made along the way when I needed help; but as I couldn’t afford to pay an agency, my friends got paid in coffees!
Back in 2015 I found myself without my bilingual friend, and had to make do with that well know machine translator mentioned in Tom's video above. I needed to write a letter to my French speaking doctor and walked into his office with a printout. He started reading.. took a pause.. started laughing.. looked confused, and started rubbing his chin. Turns out "phlegm" needs a human translation as it's not "flegme" in French! Even though I expected it, it sucked! I found myself wondering: ‘why can’t I get help from all the bilingual people around me?'
There were also so many times when I needed to communicate with my local French plumber, builder, mayors office and school. Machine translation just didn't work for me because of all the specialist terminology and local language variation. I knew the bilingual community could help.
I banged by head for a while and came up with an idea: Setlr was born.
Remember those coffees I mentioned earlier? Well, that’s how we’ve priced Setlr. Instead of charging the sort of fees you’d see at an agency, we’ve priced Setlr competitively, paying everyday bilinguals a fair amount as a thank you for their time and effort. It’s kind of like all of those coffees I bought my friends when I needed their help with little bits of translation; the only difference here is that Setlr is truly global, bringing you bilingual friends from all over the world, ready to help 24/7 365, whenever you need them most.

What people are saying
Setlr is first and foremost a community product. It's built by a passionate community of app enthusiasts, for the everyday community of people who struggle with the language barrier, and powered by a global community of bilinguals. What better way to get the traction we need to bring Setlr to the world than through crowdfunding, and the Kickstarter community!
Well we've already spent the last year building the technology behind Setlr. That's been the most expensive part of the project so far and we were lucky enough to have some great backers behind us. But while the apps are almost complete, the technology that allows multiple translators to work on texts at the same time is complex, and needs the next round of real-world testing with an even larger user-base. Our Kickstarter funds will power the next round of fine tuning, allow us to build new features and help us advertise the app to clients all over the world who need something much better than machine translation, but much cheaper than an agency. With your help, we can get there!
Thanks a million for taking a few minutes to check out our project :)
Feel free to hook up with us on social media, leave us a comment or a question. We love hearing from you!

Risks and challenges
We've spent the last 12 months building the technology behind Setlr, and we've got some big names in app development, like Evan Luthra behind us.
It's time to get Setlr into the App Store and on Google Play. We value your feedback and we'll be working hand-in-hand with our backer and early adopter community to continuously improve Setlr, and deliver a product that's going to improve people's lives - helping the world overcome the language barrier and helping bilinguals to put their skills to better use.
