Metagame project report

Hello supporters! It's been several weeks since you heard from us. We don't want to bombard you with emails, but it seemed like a good time to send out an update.

Overall, progress is going well. We're working with about a dozen illustrators on creating our 100 game images (our lawyer advised us not to use screenshots). Just to whet your appetite, we have included a handful of final (or near-final) illustrations - for Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, and Pitfall.

We are still optimistic that we'll be putting your decks into the mail in September. We are truly sorry that this has taken so long, but we are very excited about how the cards are shaping up!

In the meantime, we did send out everyone's t-shirts today (for some of the sponsorship levels). Remember to send an email to if your address changes.

Word is starting to get out about the Metagame. The crazy gamers at Giant Bomb somehow managed to scrape together nearly a full deck of cards from GDC and have been posting Metagame duel videos on their site - getting thousands of views and hundreds of great comments.

Coming later this year: we are preparing for the November release of a special edition of the Metagame in Esopus Magazine that will include not just games, but all kinds of cultural artifacts, from music and film to literature and architecture - and games too! You can read about some of our playtesting on the blog of Local No. 12-er Eric Zimmerman.

If you are in the Netherlands for the Digital Game Research Association conference next month, we'll be playing the game there. And there may be a special Metagame going on at Indiecade too. More conference announcements to come.

In the meantime, thanks as always for your amazing support. We can't wait to finish the decks and send them to you!

Metagame update!

For backers only. If you're a backer of this project, please log in to read this post.

We did it.

Our generous Metagame supporters,

Local No. 12 wants to offer a heartfelt thanks to each of you for helping realize our project. Some of you are players from the Game Developers Conference that wanted your own deck of cards. Others are educators that plan to use the Metagame in your classrooms and at other events. Still others were just curious to see what this Metagame thing was all about.

But all of you are rockstars in helping us far exceed our goal of raising $10,000 for a print run of the game - the final total was more than $20,000! Thank you thank you thank you!

In earlier updates, we have outlined how we are going to use the funds and when we are getting you decks. You can read these posts by clicking the UPDATES tab on our Kickstarter page, but here's the summary: all funds will be used towards the creation and distribution of Metagame cards. A portion of the funds will be used for a visual revamping of the game. The time required for this design process, plus printing and shipping, means that you will receive your decks this summer - possibly as late as July, but hopefully sooner.

We are also currently playtesting a number of Metagame variants - for groups as small as 3 or 4 players, through party-sized groups - which will help you make the most of your decks. By the time you do get your cards we will have an expanded Metagame website - now located at the fabulous URL (which was donated by one of you). The site will be a hub for our community of players to discuss game rules, trade experiences, and suggest cards ideas for future editions of the game. And stay tuned for more Metagame news - we have had some interest in larger Metagame projects we hope to announce soon.

In the meantime, expect to hear from us in the next few days as we gather information about your shipping address and (depending on your level of funding) your t-shirt size. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us through the Kickstarter site or through

Finally, thanks again! You folks are truly awesome.

Home stretch!

You are spectacular. It's just over a week before our Kickstarter campaign ends, and we're less than $1000 away from our goal!

We wanted to thank all of you that have supported the Metagame so far, and especially those of you who have been tweeting, emailing, and blogging about our videogame card game. You've been extremely helpful in getting the word out.

Most of the questions we get about the game are answered in the previous Kickstarter update. But we wanted to send a quick note about when you'll get your decks. We have decided to upgrade the visual design of the Metagame cards, and after the Kickstarter campaign ends, we'll begin that process. With the new visuals, the printing time, and all of the packing and shipping, we expect the games to be in your hands by this summer - hopefully June, but possibly July.

With just a few days to go, we'd appreciate any help you can get us - tell your friends, post about the game, and spread the love.

Yours in Metagaming,

 - Local No. 12 (Mike Edwards, Colleen Macklin, John Sharp, and Eric Zimmerman)

Looking for Metagame stories!

Hello Metagame backers!

We're not going to be sending out too many of these updates, but we wanted to shout out a quick request... most of you played the game at the Game Developers Conference, and we are collecting stories about your experience of the Metagame.

If you have a moment, please write up a sentence or two about the favorite Metagame match you won (or lost) - an unusual debate that you judged, or any other Metagame encounters or experiences in which you took part last week.

Feel free to post them in the comments section of our Kickstarter page, or if you prefer, you can send them directly to We'll be compiling them on our blog.

In other Metagame news... we posted a postmortem on the game at the Local No.12 blog. And there's a flicker page with images from the game

We are up to 100 backers and almost $4000! Keep spreading the word and thanks for your support!
