How it works
The SafeWake lamp automatically detects if you are having a night terror and illuminates the room to help wake you. The system talks wirelessly to your fitness heart-rate monitor and lights when your heart rate exceeds a user-adjustable threshold. It's patent pending!
The lamp may interrupt your night terror, allowing you to wake in the comfort of a well-lit room. The activation of the lamp also alerts your sleeping partner that you're having a night terror, and provides light so they can assess how best to help.
Using SafeWake is simple: all you do is turn on the heart-rate monitor. SafeWake automatically connects and checks your heart rate throughout the night.
SafeWake has an optional audio alert that plays Beethoven's Fuer Elise. You connect an amplified PC speaker to SafeWake's 1/8" audio jack to hear the audio. SafeWake does not ship with a speaker.
We ran a field trial with volunteers. We provided them with prototype SafeWakes using 3D printed cases and hand-built circuit boards. We'd like to thank our awesome volunteers for helping us refine SafeWake!
Here's an evaluation from a field tester who initially contacted us through our website (we added emphasis in bold):
1. Would I recommend SafeWake to someone with night terrors?
Yes, I would recommend SafeWake to individuals that suffer with night terrors.
2. Did SafeWake help you with your night terrors?
Yes. When I would wake up in a night terror, the light helped ease the fear I would normally experience. SafeWake was successful 12 out of 15 night terrors.
3. What did you like about SafeWake?
What I liked about SafeWake is that once I was awaken with a night terror, the illumination of the light helped ease my fear and it allowed me to snap out of the state I was in very quickly. The alarm setting also allowed for my significant other to wake up and help me snap out of my night terror. (I can see this product helping individuals partners see what a night terror is and help them truly understand what the individual experiencing night terrors is going through.)
4. What would you change?
What I would change about SafeWake is the sensitivity of the heart monitor. At times when the heart monitor would shift on my arm, the alarm from the SafeWake would go off. In order for to prevent that from happening I would have to sleep with the heart monitor snug slightly above the wrist.
5. What features would you like to add?
I would like to see the SafeWake have different alarm sound options along with a volume control.
I have been suffering from night terrors for the past 15 years.
Here are some of our field trial videos. These videos show accessories that are not included in the Kickstarter campaign, such as the USB disco ball and the USB camp light. These accessories still work with SafeWake, they are just not part of the Kickstarter campaign.
SafeWake has a simple design aesthetic. It looks like a lamp, so there is no need to explain why it is in your bedroom. Here is the evolution of the case from initial concept to high-resolution prototype. The production cases will look even better with a glossy finish on the button and sides.
Silver Level Reward: you get the SafeWake base, a USB LED lamp, a 120V power supply, and a small screwdriver to adjust the alert trip-point. You will need to supply your own heart-rate monitor.

Frequently asked questions
What Heart-Rate Monitors Work With SafeWake? We have tested SafeWake with the Scosche Rhythm+ and Mio Link. We prefer the Rhythm+ since we feel it is more comfortable to wear while sleeping. Other Bluetooth LE (Bluetooth Smart) heart-rate monitors will probably work too but have not been tested.
Will SafeWake Cure My Night Terrors? Unfortunately, SafeWake isn't a cure for night terrors. SafeWake may shorten the duration of your night terror and may also wake another person while giving them light so they can see how to help. SafeWake alerts when your heart races during a night terror and attempts to wake you with illumination.
SafeWake is not a medical device. It is not for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.
Will SafeWake Work For My Child? SafeWake talks to a fitness heart-rate monitor. Young children are generally too small to safely use the heart-rate monitor.
