Welcome to my Kickstarter Campaign for the Sorrel Dress paper sewing pattern!
Sorrel is a fresh take on the classic shirt-waist dress, seamlessly pairing vintage elements with modern design. With inclusive Sizing, A to D cups, and Pockets!
About the Campaign:
Making different formats of my patterns available to suit individual needs has long been a goal of mine. I released my first digital sewing pattern more than four years ago. Now with 22 full digital patterns under my belt and having been asked numerous times over those years when paper patterns would be available, it’s time to finally commit. But to do that, I need your help.
I’ve been researching printing, paper stock and packaging for a long time, while also developing my patterns to provide a more inclusive size range.
My recent patterns include cups A, B, C, & D and range in size from an A cup bust size of 74cm (29") to a D cup bust size of 134.5cm (53"). The Sorrel Dress (the special design currently available only to Kickstarter backers) is no different and includes full Finished Garment Measurements so that you can get the perfect fit for your unique shape.
Why support this campaign?
Sorrel is only going to be available at this price for a limited number of backers — if you purchase any of the Sorrel Pattern Sets you will get the pattern for over 50% off* what you would pay to purchase both a paper pattern + its digital format.
Kickstarter Special pricing - the first round of Early Bird special prices for the digital-only pattern have now all sold. However, you can still receive the Sorrel Dress sewing pattern in digital-only format with the Kickstarter Special Pricing. You'll still pay less than what the full retail price will be and you'll have access to the pattern in December 2018 rather than having to wait until mid-2019.
The Sorrel launch is a Kickstarter exclusive, and the pattern will initially only be available to Kickstarter backers. After the campaign has ended, Sorrel will not be available in either print or digital format until the middle of next year, which is all the more reason to get in now.
When will my paper pattern be available?
Due to the timing of the campaign finishing (with Christmas and the New Year right around the corner) my best estimate is that paper patterns will start shipping out around mid-March 2019.
However, digital patterns will be emailed to all qualified backers within a fortnight of the campaign closing and being successfully funded. This means that you can start making your Sorrel Dress ASAP if you can’t wait for the paper pattern to arrive. Digital files include a Print Shop version as well as an easy to assemble print-at-home version. All digital patterns include the Layers feature.
As soon as the campaign is funded, the envelope designer will be engaged to start the design process. This could take anywhere from 6-8 weeks depending on availability to start and any alterations to the initial design.
During the envelope design period, I will be modifying the layout of the instructions to turn them into an A5 booklet form ready for printing.
From there, patterns and envelopes will be ordered and it will be a waiting game for them to arrive in NZ to be assembled with the instructions and any bonus rewards that you may have ordered.
Patterns will then be packaged up and shipped off to their new homes.
I will be keeping backers up to date on the Kickstarter page as well as Instagram and Facebook so that you know what stage we are at with patterns.
How will the money be spent?
Since the pattern itself has already been designed, made, and tested (and is ready for immediate sale in its digital format), all funds from this Kickstarter campaign will go into producing the paper pattern itself...
- Hiring a graphic designer for the full-colour printed envelope
- Printing of patterns, envelopes and instruction booklets
- Shipping costs of pattern elements to NZ, including import fees and relevant taxes
The initial sum I’m asking for is lower than the full cost of pattern production (it’s expensive!) but it helps me gauge your interest and gives me a great start to making paper patterns available. I plan to fund the remainder of the production costs personally because I want to see my patterns printed and in as many of your hands as possible.
About the Sorrel Dress Pattern:
Shaped with double open-ended darts around the bodice and skirt waistline, Sorrel’s relaxed silhouette and sleek skirt provide the illusion of a fitted garment with all the comfort of a shift-style dress.
A simple foldout collar fames the face, creating a gentle V neckline, and kimono sleeves lend a casual vintage vibe.
Layer with fitted long sleeves and boots for cool weather, or make up in a seasonal double gauze or flowing cotton lawn for a light-weight summer garment.
View 1 includes a separate button placket, great for playing with prints and different fabric layouts. View 2 has a grown on button placket, helping you to keep the design simple and the construction straightforward.
With A, B, C & D cups included as well as clever inset pockets, Sorrel is a perfect project for confident beginner seamstresses.
Fabric Requirements & Sizing Info:
Choose from a beautiful selection of extra rewards on top of your Sorrel Dress pattern set (available to backers at the $28NZD level).
From glass headed pins and gold tipped needles, to mini embroidery scissors and heavy duty thread snips, there are so many lovely bits and pieces to round out your sewing space. These tools are high quality and fit for heavy daily use - they will make sewing up your Sorrel Dress a breeze and a pleasure.
I'm excited to show off some of my tester makes during November! They'll be paired with mini-interviews so that you can get to know more about each tester and any pattern adjustments they made.
Gathered Sorrel Dress Tutorial:
Get more out of your Sorrel Dress pattern!
Mid-November, I'll be posting a tutorial on how you can transform your Sorrel Dress into a looser silhouette with a gathered skirt. Perfect for the warmer months when you may not want a fitted silhouette (or if you're pregnant!).
During the month, I'll be revealing Stretch Goals as each milestone is unlocked.
Goal #1 UNLOCKED - Paper Pippi Pinafore
The Pippi Pinafore will now go into print along with The Sorrel Dress - yay!
Purchase the paper Pippi Pinafore pattern at a great discount of 25% off* the retail price - numbers are limited.
Stretch Goal paper patterns will ship at the same time as Sorrel but will only be available to Kickstarter Backers initially. If you miss out, you'll have to wait until mid-2019 to purchase a paper pattern at the full retail price of $18USD.
* exchange rates may fluctuate over the course of the month. This is accurate as of the 1st November 2018 NZDT.
Goal #2 UNLOCKED - Paper Juniper Cardigan
The Juniper Cardigan will now go into print along with Sorrel & Pippi!
You’ll get the paper copy of Juniper for 25% off** the retail price of the pattern by pledging through this campaign.
So, if you’d like a paper copy of The Juniper Cardigan and:
1. You haven’t pledged yet:
Please find the Juniper Reward tier on the right. You will need to add $7 worldwide (or $5 within NZ) for postage.
2. You have already pledged:
Please go into ‘Manage Pledge’ in your Kickstarter account and add an additional $20 onto your pledge.
If you have now pledged for all three paper patterns, you’ll need to add an additional $7 worldwide (or $5 within NZ) for postage.
If this is your first paper pattern that you are pledging towards, please add an additional $7 worldwide (or $5 within NZ) on top of your pledge amount for postage.
- If you’re only pledging for two paper patterns, your initial postage cost of $7 worldwide (or $5 within NZ) will cover those.
Once the campaign has finished, I will send out surveys where you can let me know everything you’ve pledged for.
If any of the above is confusing, please send me a message with everything you’re pledging towards and whether you’re in NZ or not and I can send you back the total you should add to your pledge.
**exchange rates may fluctuate over the course of the month. This is accurate as of the 10th November 2018 NZDT.
Risks and challenges
Risks could include the following:
Hold-ups on the printing end (machinery break down etc)
Delays at NZ Customs entering the country.
Damage enroute to NZ or once completed and on their way to you.
Time of year (Christmas and New Year manufacturing closures etc)
I'm pregnant and due in mid-February!
Prior to my career as a pattern designer, I worked closely with graphic designers, publishers and printers over several different jobs, so I know the industry pitfalls. As with any publication project involving both production and international shipping, there’s always the potential for delay, but I have done my research and will only be working with printers and shipping partners with proven track records in delivering high quality material on time.
I’ll keep backers updated with any and all news (as well as sneak peeks into the production), and am confident that I’ll be able to overcome any hurdles that may arise. And, my trusty husband is on deck to pack and send your paper patterns while I take photos and update this page from the couch under the newest addition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
