About this project
What if there was a card game that stirred players thinking and creativity, provided an exceptional learning experience and was actually fun to play?!
CLEVER is an educational card game that was designed around being a blast to play. What's more, is that CLEVER accomplishes this through creativity and strategy while inviting players to utilize their cognitive thinking skills. What makes CLEVER so unique is its ability to teach and reinforce learning basics such as- categorical classification, color matching, sequential ordering, spelling, mathematics and more, all in ONE easy to play, tough to master game!
Supporting CLEVER is more than just supporting a game- It's supporting the idea that games can offer so much more than just entertainment.
It's time for a new classic card game. It's time for CLEVER
*Check out the above video to see how it works.
Hey, the project video changed a little bit! It sure did, simply wanted to try a little different approach. You can still see the original video here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck9lZJzyvSU&feature=player_detailpage
CLEVER @ PLAY
Although the first edition of CLEVER is the focus of this kick-starter project, the scope and possibilities of CLEVER is much bigger, more exciting and ambitious! CLEVER was designed to be the educational card game, providing a more comprehensive learning/creative experience than any other “educational” game out there. However, after having people play the game, it very quickly became apparent that CLEVER is much more than a educational game for kids; adults love it too and they are already asking for more!

Let's play some CLEVER!
What do you see? (Part II)
How many different combinations of 3 or more related cards to you see in the below sample hand? See- (Part I) below "Part II" for ideas.
Answer: There are NO possible combinations of 3 or more related cards in this hand! To the draw pile or discard row you will go!
Thus far, the example hands you've seen have been set up to showcase all the different types of play a single hand could have. I wanted to show a hand that illustrates the opposite end of the spectrum. Sometimes the hand you're dealt won't have any matches! CLEVER will not be as easy as it may appear to be in some of the examples previously set forth. You will in fact need to be clever, in order to win!
What would help the above hand? A vowel, orange, grey, bird or the number "5" cards would all prove to help the player with this hand.
What do you see? (Part I)
How many different combinations of 3 or more related cards do you think there are in this sample hand?
The ANSWER: There are 20 different combinations of 3 or more playable cards from this example hand.
Color Matching (1) – “Red”
Category Matching (1) – “Fruit”
Sequence (2) - “1, 2, 3” & “D, E, F”
Math Equation (4) – “1+2=3”, “2+1=3”, “3-1=2”, “3-2=1”
Spelling (11) - Awe, Awed, Daw, Deaf, Dew, Fad, Fade, Fed, Few, Wad, Wade & Wed
As CLEVER is not yet made, this example further illustrates how the game works and allows us to begin sharing the rules that will accompany the game. The rules as they are written are set up to provide best possible gameplay. However, as with any great game, “House Rules” are encouraged and will certainly apply! CLEVER will even be committing a page on its’ website to sharing different variations of how to play the game; both from the creator and the community of CLEVER players!
Here are a couple of things we’d like to point out with the above example-
1. Vowels are important! Spelling words would drop to 0 without them in this hand.
2. Once you own the game, you’ll realize that the order in which you play an equation matters!
3. Playable categories are predetermined and specific, and will appear in the rulebook.
Have questions? Feel free to leave them in the comments section and we’ll be happy to answer them!
CLEVER will include free shipping to all US backers. Due to the cost of shipping internationally, if making a pledge to CLEVER from outside the US, please include an additional $7 to account for shipping. Thank you
CLEVER is made up of 72 cards in total, with each card having an alpha or numeric value, a title, a color and a photo image all its’ own. The card values represent every letter in the English alphabet as well as the numbers 1 - 10.
There are a total of 12 unique colors and categories.
The colors consist of- Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Pink, Brown, Black, White, Tan & Grey!
The categories consist of- Fruits, Vegetables, Insects, Birds, Instruments, Road Signs, Sea Creatures, Animals (4 legged), Electric, Balls (sports), Body Parts & Vehicles.
*If you have further inquires regarding the above, please feel free to post them in the "Comments" section, or by contacting us directly via the "Send Message" link on the top of the CLEVER kickstarter page.
Through our play-testing we have found the best age range for CLEVER is 7 years of age and older. We've found that most 7 year olds pick it up immediately and are able to utilize all facets of the game within the very first time they play.
However, we’ve gone on to find that the educational/learning aspect of the game is perhaps more beneficial with even younger children.
One of the things we’re really proud of with Clever is that the learning interaction between different levels of players seems to happen rather quickly and organically during gameplay.
The best example of this comes from parents playing with their children or an older child playing with younger children.
This is how it works- as you saw in the video, players are trying to match 3 or more related cards in their hand. Once they accomplish a “matching” they will then play their cards by placing them face up in front of them. By doing this, all the players can see what has been played and more importantly WHY it has been played. Through this simple game mechanic, players of a lower skill set begin LEARNING from players with a higher skill set! Likewise, sometimes the most obvious way to play is only realized by a younger or lower skilled player and in turn they are able to TEACH the players that are concentrated on playing a more complex combination.
By the time CLEVER is released, we will have the most appropriate age range listed on the game box. Most likely that range will be ages 7 and up or ages 5 and up.
Thank you for taking an interest!
Suppose I pledge $100 and choose 3 copies of the game and no additional T-shirts. How many total copies of the game will I be receiving?
At the $100 pledge level you would have a combined total of 5 copies of CLEVER, as it INCLUDES ALL of the lower tiered awards!
In addition, you would be receiving a CLEVER T-shirt, a prize pack consisting of CLEVER stickers, notepads, pencils & magnets, and one of your copies of the game will be signed by the creator!
You will also be a "CLEVER Participant", giving you the ability to submit and vote on a version of CLEVER you'd like to see made, as well as be a part of the process as it's brought to life!
