What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

I am working on a monograph of my life's work that is entitled Two Journeys. Ashley Simone is the editor of the monograph and, pending funding, Lars Müller Publishers will be the publisher. Below are images of some of my work and a description of the monograph. Your support is greatly appreciated!

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Two Journeys is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of Michael Webb, an artist trained as an architect and operating at the intersection of art and architecture. He is widely known for creatively exploring the boundaries of drawing techniques, specifically perspectival projection. The book features a foreword by Kenneth Frampton, critical essays by Michael Sorkin and others, commentaries by Webb and nearly 200 drawings—artistic works rooted in analytical thinking and structured about architectural elements and notational systems.

Webb’s aspirations for and re-conceptions of the built and natural environments are revealed between a twenty-year study on perspective projection that utilizes as its subjects the Regatta Course at Henley-on-Thames, in England, and early work, some of which was done in conjunction with the avant-garde, neofuturistic group Archigram, which formed during the 1960s at the Architectural Association in London.

The publication connects work of the artist-architect completed between the years 1958 and the present into a continuously evolving narrative about the relationship between architecture, the automobile, and landscape. Webb’s work investigates these relationships using notions of time, space and speed, and analogue drawing tools such as pencil and collage, which are often rendered later in oil paint.

Risks and challenges

I have been working on the production of this monograph for over 3 years along with my consistent and committed editor. 95% of the material is collected and we are in the process of curating the book and editing text. Most of the essay writers have been secured. Lars Müller Publishers, is committed to publish in early 2018, but with exception: the production must be funded by me. Thus, this Kickstarter which, if successful, will provide approximately half of the book's production costs. I will fund the other half privately. It has taken a long time to arrive to this point.

Siting in my studio today is an oil painting that began as a pencil drawing more than 30 years ago; changes were made to it yesterday. I am known for endlessly working on projects. Some of the individuals that have generously purchased work from me in the past may tell you that I do, on occasion, go to their homes, remove work from the wall and make subtle alterations. This is true. So, I myself may be the biggest challenge the project faces, but I've committed to working under the direction of my editor and publisher and have come to accept that the book will be representation of my life's work at a moment in time; I'll keep working in my studio. Perhaps you will find me at your home one evening, after the book is released, making changes to the printed copy you received as a reward for support.
