As of November 24th, I have reached my original goal of $8500!
Thank you for showing such strong support for this new album "Spinning Yarns". In order to take the release of this album to the next level of success, it needs to be in the hands (and ears and minds) of folk DJ's, journalists, music critics all over Canada, the USA, UK and Ireland.
For an independent release, that is a tall order....however I do have professional publicists who have agreed to do publicity campaigns for "Spinning Yarns". I have budgeted for publicity in North America, but not in the UK. Publicity in the UK will be an extra $2400.
If you would still like to show your support for this project before December 4th, that is what your pledge will be for - $2400 for UK publicity.
Original Project Description
Many people know Canada as a home to vibrant music traditions with roots in Scotland, Ireland and Brittany. From eastern areas such as Cape Breton, Newfoundland and PEI; to Quebec, the Ottawa Valley and Métis communities on Canada’s prairies; Celtic connections live on in the fiddles, accordions and dancing feet of current tradition bearers. Canada is also home to rich singing traditions, many of which show strong ties to Ireland, and these are less well-known.
In 2009, I was nominated as "Best Traditional Singer of the Year" by the Canadian Folk Music Awards. I was also named "Best Vocalist of the Year" in 2011 and 2012 by the Live Ireland Awards. I have toured internationally performing traditional songs from Canada, Ireland, Scotland and England with The Outside Track. I have also performed and recorded with the Canadian folk string quartet, the Fretless, the Two Tap Trio (St. Paul), the Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and Paddy O’Brien’s Doon Ceili band in Minnesota.
I am really looking forward to creating a great album that will ignite more interest in folk songs from Canada. I have also been featured as a soloist at the Celtic Connections festival in Cape Breton, Pierre Schryer’s Canadian Celtic Celebration in Thunder Bay and at the Celtic Junction in Saint Paul.
With the release of this solo album, two years after my last tour with The Outside Track, I am breathing new life into such songs - rare gems with an Irish flavor that were once sung by skilled Canadians such as Angelo Dornan from Elgin, New Brunswick, O.J. Abbott of the Ottawa Valley and Cyril O'Brien of Trepassey, Newfoundland.
These ballads hold stories that connect us to our history and collective memory, both conscious and unconscious, in ways that only traditional music can.
The songs have been arranged by some of the best Irish song accompanists anywhere; Brian Miller (Bua) on guitar and bouzouki, Randy Gosa (Myzerk) on guitar and bouzouki, Ailie Robertson (The Outside Track) on harp and Dáithí Sproule (Altan) on guitar.
We are recording at Hideaway studio in Minneapolis and the songs are coming alive, but there is still a lot of work to be done! This Kickstarter campaign is to cover the cost of the remaining tracking, mixing, mastering, graphic design and manufacturing of the albums. Thank you in advance for your support of this exciting project!

Risks and challenges
There are many significant challenges with this recording project, in particular challenges of time and financial resources. First, if this Kickstarter project isn't 100% backed, there will be no funding for us to complete the album!
Brian Miller and Randy Gosa, the backbone of the album, live in Saint Paul and Milwaukee respectively (5 hours apart). It is costly and difficult to get together for critical quality lengths of time to rehearse and record. We are fitting the time in between gigs and road trips, but it is admittedly, a significant challenge.
As many of you know, my husband Brian and I are fairly busy with our family and careers. I am the part-time Executive Director of the Center for Irish Music, a non-profit Irish music school in Saint Paul and Brian is completing a Masters degree in Library Sciences while developing his Northwoods Songs project including performances, lectures, research and academic writing.
In addition to raising a lively little son and being active community members, we are dedicated to continuing to be creative, productive and inspired musicians well into our midlives and beyond! This solo album is an important next step in this plan. We have spent years honing our musical skills and tastes and are both driven to continue developing the music that we are so passionate about.
I am really looking forward to getting this album finished with your support. Thank you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
