A Sister's Journey is a challenging platformer game, set in a modern, near-distant future not too far from our own time. Explore a vast and immersive world and uncover the mysteries it holds!
The game is planned to be released in the second half of 2020 for PC (Steam). Personally I would love to bring the game to consoles, too! While the current focus lies on finishing and releasing the game for PC, a console port might be quite possible some time after the PC release.
The game tells the story of Violet on her adventure trying to find Airena, her beloved sister, who seems to have disappeared very suddenly and without a trace. And if that was not enough, starting with Airena's sudden disappearance, mysterious and dangerous events start to happen all around. With her world suddenly turned upside down, help Violet find out what dangers and mysteries are lurking in the shadows, and where her sister might have disappeared to. Embark on an epic journey, in a both dangerous and wonderful world!
A Sister's Journey is a challenging 2D platformer game, offering a gaming experience that will feel both familiar and unique. The game's main focus will lie on exploration, platforming and combat; all while following the story - and with secrets, puzzles and new things to be found all around you!
A Sister's Journey is being designed to be a hard and challenging, but also fair and accessible game throughout. It will start off easy to learn, but increasing in difficulty steadily as you progress through the game.
Prepare to beat increasingly challenging levels, where your true platforming skills will be put to the test, and the right timing and movement might decide between failure and success.
Gather your strength (and weapons!), and face dangerous and deadly bosses in action packed fights, where every wrong move could be your last. Learn their tactics, and improve your own, and you might emerge victorious. Some fights and levels might be really tough to beat; But in the same time it aims to be a very rewarding experience if you do!
Take a break
But sometimes, we all just want to relax and take a break from everyday life when playing games, so for those players who wish to experience the game in a more relaxed manner, by simply enjoying the story and exploring the world, without worrying too much about difficulty, the game will feature a Guidance Mode. By enabling, you will probably have a much easier time, by giving you more survivability, movability and more help in general on your journey, to beat difficult stages and defeat bosses more easily, while still providing a fair challenge and the full gameplay experience.
You will find many obstacles in your path, and not all of them are mere traps or environmental hazards! Dark forces seem to try to stop you on every step you take on your journey, and while smaller enemies can be a nuisance, much more dangerous boss fights and encounters will await you. A LOT of them!
A Sister's Journey will feature many weapons that can be found, each with multiple fire modes, and various ways to upgrade them along the way. The same goes for a multitude of character skills or traits, which you will discover and learn along your journey, to improve your movement, strength and survivability.
Unlock your true potential and master them all. In order to reach (and survive) even the most dangerous areas, you're probably gonna need every one of them!
Everything in A Sister's Journey is lovingly crafted by hand - the art, the animations, the levels - and passionately put together to create a charming and wonderful world ready to explore.
Your adventure will take you through lush plains, eerie forests, mysterious caves, ancient temples, snowy landscapes and high mountains, as well as futuristic laboratories, magical places and the darkest dungeons!
The world won't be divided in separate, linear levels, but will be connected together as a whole. Explore freely as you go, revisit previous areas, find new routes and secrets, as well as unlock and discover more possibilities to reach new areas as you progress through the game.
On your journey you will meet many interesting characters, both friend and foe, and probably also make some new friends! Additionally, the characters created by you though the rewards from the 5th tier onward will be able to be found all over the world after you progressed a bit through the game. Seek them out, for they need your help as well as you will need theirs!
My name is Florian Lackner, 33 years old, and I'm a solo indie game developer, digital artist and programmer from southern Germany. Gaming has been a dear hobby of mine since forever, and already in my younger years it sparked a huge interest in game development, too!
It has been over 15 years now since I first started with programming, always with a heavy focus and interest on game development, and always eager to learn more. I wanted to make sure that, when starting a big game project, I am truly ready and capable of delivering the quality it deserves. Not only for me, but primarily for you. To me, this project is not just a game, but so much more! Something I put all my heart and passion into, a huge chapter of my life. And ultimately an adventure to create something to share with the world, something that people will hopefully enjoy playing.
Additionally, I've been working as a digital artist for almost 7 years now, focusing on animations, effects and pixel art. If you are interested to see a bit more of my work (though not directly game related), you can check out a few of my animations and effects under:
Those Animations haven't been created using standard animation and editing software like Adobe After Effects, but by programming - using the same self developed particle engine A Sister's Journey uses!
A Sister's Journey has now been in development for a little over a year, mostly fulltime. The game uses its very own engine, written and developed by myself. It was specifically designed with this game in mind, to have maximum flexibility and possibilities to bring A Sister's Journey to life.
That said, the game's engine and the tech behind the game has now finally been completed, and everything is in a fully functional state, providing already a satisfying and really smooth gameplay experience. It will however continuously be improved further along the way, to provide an even better performance, improved visual effects, gameplay mechanics and in general more possibilities for the final game.
With the game engine ready to go, and all core mechanics finished, it's time to bring life to our world!
To give you a short overview of what's done and still has to be worked on, here's a rough and approximate breakdown:
- Game engine : 98% done
- Game assets, objects, characters and enemies : 30% done
- The world, levels : 20% done
- Sound effects : 50% done
- Music : 10% done
- Game mechanics : 80% done
It's still quite some way to go, but a major milestone have already been reached by finishing the game engine, the core gameplay and the game's mechanics. What's coming next is tons of designing and creative work, something which I'm personally really looking forward to!
I'd say the game is about halfway there, and I'd love to take the rest of the journey together with you!
This game started as a passionate project I put lots of love and work into, with the intention to create something unique and wonderful. But since then it has come a long way, and now it's time to start going all in.
Starting a Kickstarter campaign is a wonderful way to start making your creative work public, and come in touch with those people who ultimately and hopefully might want to play and enjoy the finished game. But first and foremost, in my opinion it's one of the best ways to help financing and completing such a passionate project, while also giving something back in return.
Risks and challenges
This project as well as the journey up to this point already has been a challenging, but also very rewarding experience for myself.
Planing and realizing such a large game project, especially as a solo dev, most certainly always comes with certain risks and challenges. But by reaching this point of the game's development, the biggest technical challenges have already been overcome, and a solid foundation has been established.
One of the remaining challenges is providing you with both a realistic and accurate release date for the game. For us gamers, it can often be exhausting when the game we are waiting (and have paid) for is constantly being delayed, or in the worst case: being rushed and released as an unfinished and often unstable game. For that reason, I want to make *sure* to deliver the game to you as polished and complete as it should be, all while giving me enough time to do so.
I'm taking this project and the final quality of the game very seriously - since besides being a game developer, I'm a passionate gamer at heart myself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
