About this project
The Daring Comics Roleplaying Game is a complete super-hero rulebook, providing you with new rules for creating your own comic book adventures, along with the Fate system rules, all in one place.
Designed around the Fate Core system from Evil Hat Productions, the Daring Comics RPG not only gives you an extensive set of core rules for creating your own comic book roleplaying series, but also maintains the toolkit nature of Fate by showing you how to turn many of the dials to customize the rules at the table.
The book is expected to be in the area of 250 pages after layout, 8.5” x 11”, with a color cover and black and white interior artwork. The retail version will be offered in PDF and softcover.
The hardcover edition ($30, $40, and $55 reward levels) is exclusive only to this Kickstarter.
Some of what you’ll find within the rulebook:
- Series and setting creation rules. Choose the power level and tone of your series, then determine the experience level of the player characters. Each choice directly effects how powerful your heroes are at the beginning of your series.
- Point-Build character creation rules, along with an optional Less Math variant for those who just want to jump in and play.

- Over 100 ready-made super-powers and rules to create your own

- Full Fate system rules
- An appendix of tips and examples on how to turn the dials and customize various rules.
The (estimated) 96 page mega-adventure begins with a series of strange attacks in the player-characters' city of operations, and quickly expands to propel them across the multiverse and into a final confrontation against Intellitron, with not only the fate of their world, but all others, hanging in the balance.
You'll visit other versions of Earth, each with their own tone and flavor, and each with their own cast of heroes and villains. Who will you be able to recruit, and who will become sworn enemies? It all depends on the choices you, the players, make.
The mega-adventure will take you all the way to a Major Milestone; and a majority of the NPCs come with variable game stats for different series power levels, as well as GM tips for further customization.
The GM will also receive tips on how to springboard off the choices the characters made throughout the adventure, and quite possibly have enemies strike again at a later time from across the Multiverse.
The Mega-Adventure will have a PDF-Only retail release. The softcover ($45 reward level) and hardcover ($55 reward level) editions for this book are Kickstarter Exclusive..
If your reward level earns you a physical copy of any product, make sure you review the Physical Copies section below.
All PDF and physical copies of a product will have the orders sent out to you 30 days before retail release. Keep in mind that although we will send them out 30 days before release, we cannot guarantee you will receive them 30 days before the product becomes available in retail.
Sidekick ($10): You get the PDF version of the Daring Comics RPG, plus any unlocked Stretch Goals will be set to you in digital format.
Urban Protector ($15): The first physical reward level, you’ll receive the Daring Comics RPG in PDF and Softcover format, and you’ll also receive each unlocked Stretch Goal in digital and softcover format.
Team Reservist ($20): This level gets you a PDF copy of the Daring Comics RPG rulebook, plus a PDF copy of the Mega-Adventure. You’ll also receive digital versions of all unlocked Stretch Goals.
Team Member ($25): You get the Daring Comics RPG in both PDF and softcover, plus a PDF version of the mega-adventure. When each Stretch goal is unlocked, you’ll receive it in both digital and softcover formats.
Team Leader ($30): This one not only gets you the Daring Comics RPG in PDF, but you also receive the game in a Kickstarter Exclusive Hardcover. When each Stretch goal is unlocked, you’ll receive it in digital format and get your choice of either softcover or hardcover format.
Earth’s Strongest ($40): For this level, you get the Daring Comics RPG in both PDF and the Kickstarter Exclusive hardcover formats. You also receive a PDF copy of the Mega-Adventure. As with the previous level, you’ll receive it in digital format and get your choice of either softcover or hardcover format.
Galactic Guardian ($45): You receive the Daring Comics RPG in both PDF and softcover, and now you also receive the Mega-Adventure in both PDF and a Kickstarter Exclusive softcover format. When each Stretch goal is unlocked, you’ll receive it in digital and softcover formats.
Paragon ($55): The final reward level. You’ll receive the Daring Comics RPG in both PDF and Kickstarter Exclusive hardcover, plus you now get the Mega-Adventure in both PDF and as a Kickstarter Exclusive hardcover. When each Stretch goal is unlocked, you’ll receive it in digital format and get your choice of either softcover or hardcover format.
For those of you pledging a level with a physical copy, the physical copy will be provided through OneBookShelf (also known as RPGNow and DriveThruRPG), which is also the only place at this time where we plan to retail the book.
The way it works is that you will be sent an order for your physical book at OneBookShelf and you will pay only the printing and actual shipping costs on that order, thereby also making sure you received a discount off the retail MSRP when combined with your backing here at the Kickstarter.
The expected printing costs are as follows:
- Soft Cover Rulebook: $7.00 USD (approximate)
- Hardcover Rulebook: $11.00 USD (approximate)
- Mega-Adventure Softcover: $4.00 USD (approximate)
- Mega Adventure Hardcover: $7.00 USD (approximate)
What we wanted to do was pay the printing cost on our end from the Kickstarter, and you pay the shipping. But OneBookShelf only provides two options due to how they are set-up with the printer. The first is that we pay all printing and shipping on our end from the Funding Goal. The second is that the backer pays printing and actual shipping costs on their end.
We had to go with the second option.
We are doing it this way because we wanted to keep the Funding Goal realistic, and predetermining shipping costs without knowing the exact location of potential backers beforehand is impossible (especially when shipping outside the U.S.). This assures that every dollar pledged to the project goes into actual production of the rulebook, the mega-adventure, and any stretch goals.
OneBookShelf uses Lightning Source, Inc. for all printing, which is a division of Ingram Books. They have printing and shipping facilities throughout the world, including U.S. and U.K.
We've used print copies of our War of the Dead line (Savage Worlds) from OneBookShelf, and not only did the books look almost identical to the books previously printed for us by Cubicle 7 Entertainment and placed in retail stores, but they've held up equally well under use.
Your backing also assures you access to any unlocked Stretch Goals in digital format for free (and they all have a digital format). Backers who chose the reward option to also receive physical copies of unlocked Stretch Goals will only have to pay printing + shipping costs.
Just as for all other physical copies, you are required to pay printing + shipping costs at OneBookShelf.
Kevlar Costume ($5): One extra copy of the Daring Comics RPG softcover edition. Limit of four (4) extra copies per Backer.
Utility Belt ($10): Available only to backers of the Galactic Guardian or Paragon levels. One extra copy of the Daring Comics RPG in softcover, and one extra copy of the Mega-Adventure in exclusive softcover. Limit of four (4) extra copies of each book per Backer.
Specialized Vehicle ($20): One extra copy of the Daring Comics RPG exclusive hardcover edition. Limit of four (4) extra copies per Backer.
Secret Lair ($25): Available only to backers of the Paragon level. One extra copy of the Daring Comics RPG in the exclusive hardcover, and one extra copy of the Mega-Adventure in exclusive hardcover. Limit of four (4) extra copies of each book per Backer.
Each time a Stretch Goal is unlocked, every Backer of $10 or more automatically gets the PDF added to their rewards. There's nothing else you have to do.
If you are due a physical copy of a stretch goal, the process will work the same as for all other physical rewards. You will be required to pay printing and shipping cost via OneBookShelf, thereby receiving a decent discount off the retail MSRP.
$8,000: The first stretch goal is called Daring's Most Wanted, and is an NPC compendium book of 32 villains to add to your campaign. Each villain has multiple stat options with additional GM customization tips for tailoring them to your series.
The physical book will be black-and-white interior, 8.5”x11”, and run approximately 64-96 pages (depends on whether layout will need two or three pages for each character). Estimated print cost for the softcover is $4.00 USD, and $7.00 for an exclusive hardcover. The estimated print cost covers the entire page count range mentioned above.
$11,000: The second stretch goal unlocks the Daring Deck, a 52 card deck of 26 unique cards that add dramatic twists to your play sessions. Cards range in scope from bonuses to certain tasks, story twists, and even new subplots.
Below is a mock-up of three cards to show how some text mechanics work.
Physical cards will be printed as a standard stock, poker card sized deck with rounded corners. They will be full-color, and printing costs should average about $4.50 per deck.
$16,500: A focal point of super-human activity, Sentinel City goes into production. The setting book details dozens of districts, locations, factions, organizations, and story elements, but leaves plenty of slots open to be customized by your group.
Sentinel City includes modified series creation rules, so your group can easily add their own setting aspects, locations, people, and story elements to make it their own. Plenty of ready-made NPC villains are waiting to take on your heroes, and GMs are provided with dozens of plot hooks to help build their own comic book series.
Sentinel City is playable both on its own, and as a city plug-in for your existing series.

$20,000: Whether you're a hero fighting crime or a villain trying to stay one-step ahead, Inside Solitaire takes you deep inside a maximum security super-villain prison. Written by John Polojac (who's worked on both Wild Cards and DC Adventures from Green Ronin Publishing), Inside Solitaire includes details on life inside the Solitaire Island Federal Prison, the Null Therapy where a villain can undergo experimentation to remove his powers in exchange for a shorter sentence, dark conspiracies, secret organizations, and detailed maps. The book is chocked full of villain NPCs to toss at your heroes, whether the heroes are inside investigating one of the conspiracies, or the villains have done the near impossible— and escaped!

How Much is Already Done?
All that remains of the rulebook manuscript is a final proofing pass (which is always done one more time after a Kickstarter funds, just be safe), and then it goes off to the editors.
All artwork and layout needs to be done, and is primarily what this Kickstarter is about.
As far as the Mega-Adventure, it has been play tested, and everything is prepped for writing the commercial manuscript, which will take less than 30 days to do. It also needs artwork, zone maps, and layout.
Stretch Goals will be released as they are ready, beginning in 2016.
Risks and challenges
We've been in the writing and publishing industries for nearly 25 years, and in the RPG business for roughly a decade (originally under the name Arbor Productions from 2005 to 2008), and have produced successful products both with and without Kickstarter.
Those years have given us the experience to know what it takes to get a product to market.
