With your help I will travel there this fall to interview artists for season three of the Tales of a Red Clay Rambler Podcast.
The Tales of a Red Clay Rambler Podcast features interviews with artists and culture makers from around the world. The show explores how the ideas and aesthetics of the interviewed artists reflect the greater cultures in which they belong. In the first two seasons I have recorded more than 70 interviews in China, Denmark, Australia and the United States. I need your help to get on the road this year and record more episodes with the amazing artists who inspire us all.
Why donate to this campaign to fund Season Three?
The podcast is based on the idea that casual, but focused, conversations between creative individuals can lead to deep insights into the nature of creativity and the human experience. I start each recording with the intent to explore both the mundane and spectacular aspects of an artist’s life in contemporary society.
I receive listener comments weekly about how these conversations have touched their lives and led to breakthroughs in their own creative practice. I believe in freely sharing the show through iTunes and Stitcher Smart Radio. Your financial support enables me to keep the podcast 100% free of cost to the listener and guarantees I'll be able to produce another great year of podcasts.
What does your donation pay for?
The show is independently funded with only minor support from advertising sponsors. Your donations make up the majority of the yearly budget for the show. My current need is broken into three categories - travel, equipment, and production cost.
I want to interview more people in more places. Your donations will help pay for the travel costs associated with visiting artists. One of the main goals for this year is to give a voice to older artists who have many wonderful stories to tell. Their generation has a lifetime of experience but little connection to share that experience in the digital era. By traveling to where they live, I will record interviews collecting their experience and insight. My travel plans this year include first-time trips to Wisconsin, Nevada, and Massachusetts, as well as return trips to Minnesota and North Carolina.
I want to upgrade the show's sound this year. Your donations will help pay for better equipment. I'll use a portion of this campaign to invest in a new audio recorder, better microphones, and other equipment upgrades. The unique environment of every episode necessitates that I have to be prepared for all sonic situations. It has been a fun challenge to turn my guest’s studios and living rooms into professional recording studios. This new equipment will help in that process and give the listener the best sound possible.
I want to continue a professional standard by producing the highest quality show possible. Your donations help create the time and resources to cover production costs. For every radio hour that airs on the podcast roughly ten hours are necessary to produce the show. This time is spent communicating with guests before and after the interview, editing sound files, mixing the episode, and using social media to distribute the episode. Your donations help pay for the production time necessary to create each episode.

I used a Kick Starter campaign to fund a teaching trip to Ernabella, Australia in 2012. In addition to being a life-changing experience it was a great introduction to the Kick Starter community and fund raising process.
During the beginning part of the campaign I felt the surge of excitement that comes with a new project. I thankfully reached my goal and set off on the trip. Once I arrived in the Outback I ran into my first set of challenges. The rewards for the campaign included collaborative pieces created by myself and the Pitjantjatjara artists that I visited. I had not anticipated the difficulty in shipping art from the middle of the Outback to the United States. Armed with that knowledge, I have planned extra time into the budget for my current Kickstarter campaign to deal with shipping.
Another challenge that I ran into was fund-raising fatigue. The beginning of the campaign was filled with encouragement and "high-five" experiences. Months later as the last of my rewards were distributed I was exhausted. To help counteract this sort of fatigue I have planned a gentler time line for this campaign. I now know how long it takes to fulfill rewards so I have readjusted my expectations. I think this will help me not to burn out early in the campaign. Fundraising is a lot like distance running.
