Summary of Documentary - Full Circle

Aid and Effect - Jake Goodman, Jason Dunn, Matt Paige, David Clark
Aid and Effect - Jake Goodman, Jason Dunn, Matt Paige, David Clark

This is a story about friendship, breakups, reconciliation and following your passion.

Full Circle is a documentary about three of the founding members of Hawk Nelson. This is a story of how three kids grew up in a small town with a passion for writing and performing music. From humble beginnings playing small shows, Jason Dunn, Matt Paige and Dave Clark wrote their iconic album Letters To The President. This album helped bring them the success they had always dreamed of as kids in the mid-2000’s. In the midst of the lights, fame and sold out shows, the once unbreakable friendship had become tested on the road. This documentary takes you behind the scenes of what actually happened during those years on the road, how the friendship and bonds became tested and broken, and how things managed to come full circle with guys coming back together years later to form a new band, Aid & Effect.

WHY THIS STORY IS IMPORTANT

This story is important to not only those that grew up listening to Hawk Nelson, but also to young and aspiring musicians that want to embark in creating music in a band with others. Friendship is often at the forefront of some of the most well-known bands, but money and different ideologies can often be the thing that tears those friendships apart. Jason, Matt and Dave sought out to be good friends making music for the love of music, but as some would put it, life happened. This film has the ability to reach a large audience of former Hawk Nelson fans, current Aid and Effect fans, and anyone who has played in a band aspiring to “make it”.

We believe that reaching our goal with this documentary will have the ability to help young and aspiring artists in the music industry. We want to give everyone involved in this film the platform to talk about their touring, fame, the music industry and how to navigate friendship. Simply put, if you have ever played in a band, were a Hawk Nelson fan, supported the music scene or independent documentary filmmaking, then this is a film you should consider backing.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

Reaching the fundraising goal for this film is critical to producing this documentary. There are many reasons why we need funds for this film, the main reason being a large portion of this story happened in the United States and we live in Canada. Our interviews with the record label, their producers and tour managers would happen in Nashville and Seattle, Washington, where they reside. We have a great crew with a ton of talent, however, there are flights to Nashville, Washington and other states for a team of four (Cody, Patrick, Pawel, Rob). We want to create the most visually pleasing story and in order to tell this story well, production costs will be incurred.

Budget:

  • Sound & Engineering Technician: Estimated $1000 for a full feature film.
  • Flights: $6000 with baggage and flights to two-three different states.
  • Film Festival Fees: $2000 to rent out Market Hall or ShowPlace in Peterborough for the night.
  • Video/Lighting Equipment Rentals: $2000
  • Catering (Food & Drink For Cast/Crew at Premiere): $1000
  •  Marketing Budget: $1000

 WHO WE ARE

PWD Visuals, StudioPTBO, Stephen Digital Media
PWD Visuals, StudioPTBO, Stephen Digital Media

Cody May, Director

Cody is the Video and Marketing Director for StudioPTBO, a digital agency based out of Peterborough, Canada. Cody has a passion for telling clients’ stories in an authentic and creative way. Cody believes the journey is the reward, and as such loves documenting people’s stories. The concept of documenting one’s journey is unique and Cody has an incredible eye to create content that sparks an emotion in the consumer. Cody has been working with StudioPTBO creating commercial material for the last year and with Full Circle is setting out to create his first feature film.

Cody is passionate about this documentary because he grew up listening to Hawk Nelson, travelling to some of their shows in the States, and has since been able to form a great friendship with three of the founding members (Matt, Dave & Jason) as they have re-formed under Aid & Effect. Cody is excited to work alongside Pawel Dwulit (PWD Visuals), Patrick Stephen (Stephen Digital) and Rob Lock (StudioPTBO) to create this film. He believes that between the four of them and their expertise and passion for storytelling, they will create a compelling story that resonates with filmgoers and documentary fans alike.

Patrick Stephen, Director of Photography & Producer

Patrick is a commercial filmmaker and director for Stephen Digital. He believes that personal stories can have the power to change lives and loves to grow these stories through motion—creating a world where the viewer can resonate with it on a deeper level. Patrick brings a passion for storytelling to every project he does, from commercials to short films and documentaries.

Especially in hard times, it becomes important to inspire those around you and Patrick believes Full Circle will be a truly inspiring story. It re-lives the falling-out and reconciliation of three lifelong friends, and all the hard times along the way: on tour, in the studio and beyond. It will be a story reaching far beyond their passion for music, to show the intricacies and hardship of real human relationships.

Pawel Dwulit, Cinematographer

Pawel is the Owner/Operator of PWD Visuals. After graduating from the University of Ottawa with a BA in History, Pawel discovered his passion for documenting stories from behind the lens, receiving a diploma in Photojournalism from Loyalist College. Pawel then had real world training as a Photojournalist for the likes of the Canadian Press, Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen. He also had stints as an associate photo editor in video at the Globe & Mail, as a multimedia producer at The National in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate, and has worked on a documentary for National Geographic. Pawel transitioned from editorial to commercial work in recent years, and has worked as a Director of Photography / Cinematographer on commercials for brands such as GM, Nike, Coca-Cola, NBA, YMCA and Air Miles.

Pawel is excited to work on this project because telling a hometown story is inspiring in itself and he believes that having the ability to tell the homegrown story of a group that has accomplished so much in such a volatile industry is an example of a real human story that everyone can benefit from watching.

Rob Lock, Production Assistant

Rob — or “Electric City Rob” (EC Rob) as he’s more commonly known — first discovered his passion for photography/videography over the Christmas holidays in the early ’90s when Saint Nick gave him a simple Kodak point-and-shoot camera that kickstarted his love affair with the art form. EC Rob shoots and edits the StudioPTBO content marketing videos and assists the team on client video shoots, many of which he edits. “I love gaining the experience and learning the skills to one day get ‘the shot.’ I have numerous short film ideas and certain pivotal moments within them are burned into my mind. Learning what I need to one day capture those moments exactly and how my mind envisions them is what keeps me ticking.”

Rob is excited to be able to help weave together a compelling documentary about a story that has is 20+ years in the making. He believes that this is truly a once in a lifetime experience and cannot wait to see the finished product

Risks and challenges

Aid & Effect has an extremely wide reach and potential because of Matt, Jason and Dave’s time playing in Hawk Nelson. Exhibit A: Someone drove 16 hours to take in their first show as Aid & Effect in Peterborough. Their music has had a tremendous impact on people across North America, making it difficult to tell the story without travelling from Peterborough, Canada to the United States. We have been working with Jason, Dave and Matt to make this all possible and tell the story to inspire other musicians that play in bands.

The most apparent risk is the fact that this Cody and Patrick’s first time tackling a feature-length documentary. Luckily we are able to work alongside Pawel Dwulit, who has worked on multiple feature-length documentaries travelling to countries like Uganda and Kenya to do so. Between the connections we have made with the help of Jason, Matt and Dave and our partnership with Pawel, we believe we will be able to produce an inspiring film.
Everyone has a passion. Ours is to make this documentary and tell this story. Help us make this happen.
