About this project
Vinyl has made a serious comeback and more and more people are interested to hear just how much sound you can get from records. That's why we've developed the Mies i100 amplifier. Unlike many other amplifiers or home theatre receivers, this tiny all-in-one solution comes with a built-in high performance phono input for your turntable so you can hear your vinyl as it was meant to sound.
How does it sound?
The Mies i100 is a result of years of research and testing, gleaned from extensive comparison listening. We plan a retail of $399. The built in phono input sounds as good as any external one up to $300. The Mies i100 has an incredibly clear, natural and powerful sound. It can party with the best of them, or deliver finesse and delicacy at low volumes. It's a great match for any speakers costing up to $1500.
- 2x Aux inputs (for CD, Computer, iPod, etc.)
- 1x Phono input for your turntable
- 1x 3.5mm front input for convenient phone or iPod connection
- 42 watts per channel of high current power into 8 ohms (70w into 4 ohms)
- Superb sounding headphone jack
- Record output to add more amps for more speakers
- Preamp output for adding a subwoofer
How big is it?
At just 9.5" x 8.5" x 2" (24cm x 21cm x 5cm), it's tiny! However, don't let the size fool you. It has a beefy power transformer and is beautifully made with top quality parts and high quality aluminum faceplate. The front panel is a model of simplicity with an easy-to-use selection switch and volume knob. Everything you want, nothing you don't. It's the perfect size and function to fit on your desk, on a bookshelf or in the smallest of places.
Who are we?
Mies® is the house brand of Planet of Sound. We are a retailer, wholesaler and now manufacturer of high quality audio components, based in Toronto, Canada. With over 7 years in audio sales and system consultation, we are experts in sound and we love vinyl. We've long traveled the world to visit the major audio shows in search of the few products that are exceptional and now we wish to fill some of the gaps in the market ourselves. A tiny amplifier with a great phono stage is our biggest request. Planet of Sound's Managing Director is Gunnar Van Vliet who previously owned RecordStoreReview.com and is well known within the audio community, especially for his critical listening tests regarding MP3, AAC and AIFF compression. We have already completed a few self-funded projects under Mies Audio Inc. including the s1 bookshelf speaker ($999USD), e200 in-ear headphones ($99USD) and the m25a and m50a tube amplifiers. Due to the cost and complexity of the i100, we are seeking funding help!
We have completed Phases 1-4. The final Phase is the production run.
1. Feature spec and design concept COMPLETED Jan. 2013
2. Electrical prototype COMPLETED Apr. 2013
3. Final production protoype COMPLETED Oct. 2013
4. Contract production partners COMPLETED Dec. 2013
5. Final production run PENDING May. 2014
The production facility is ready to mass-produce the i100 and we just need the funding to bring it to reality!

Risks and challenges
Production of electronics is the same as any other complex product. There is always a small chance of errors in manufacturing which could delay delivery. We are confident of our partners' abilities as we have been working with them for over 2 years and have built a strong relationship and system to ensure quality control. Pending successful funding, we have arranged production to start in May 2014. There is extensive electronic testing and benchmark trials before each unit is QA passed. As a final safeguard, we will be present in the factory during this process to ensure that everything meets our standards. Production time will be approximately 30-45 days.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We designed the Mies i100 with a preamp output for connecting a subwoofer. It's ideal for desktop use with a small pair of speakers and an auxiliary subwoofer to handle the low bass frequencies. Connect a Red & White RCA cable to the preamp output and use a Y-combiner cable to go to a single RCA cable into the subwoofer. Adjust volume and crossover of your sub to match your main speakers. When you adjust the main volume on the i100 it will change the main speakers and sub at the same time so everything always sounds perfect.
The record output allows you to add either an external headphone amplifier, recording device, output to connect into your computer (for recording LPs fro example), or an other Mies i100 for adding multiple zones of speakers. This can be especially useful in restaurants or bars where you wish to have 1 amp for each pair of speakers and volume control independently for each. Just daisy-chain them together for as many pairs of speakers as you want.
We have tested the headphone output with a variety of common headphones from Grado, Sennheiser, AKG etc. and it is a great match for most of them up to $300. In comparison to standalone headphone amplifiers, we think it is on par with the average $150 external model. Given the cost of the Mies i100, we feel this will more than satisfy the average desktop, IEM or casual headphone user. For advanced headphone listeners there are more expensive standalone headphone amplifiers which can be connected via the Record output jacks on the i100.
The short answer is yes. However, Kickstarter requires us to include the shipping cost as part of the pledge price and we can't specify which country receives which shipping cost. Shipping to Europe is on average about 100USD so it would push the price too high for the majority of our backers which are in North America. If you'd like to back our project and you're in Europe please kindly increase your pledge by $65, or if the project is funded, we are more than happy to ship you an i100 after the production run is completed.
99% of the people buying in the price range will be using an affordable MM (moving magnet cartridge) such as Ortofon OM5e, 2m Red, Grado Black or Gold, etc. so we've optimized it for the very best performance for moving magnet cartridges. It sounds spectacular. Of course, any high output MC (moving coil) such as Sumiko Blue Point Evo III or Dynavector 10x5 will also work wonderfully. We have tested with these and the amp is a great match for this quality of cartridge.
Yes, the i100 has a Record Output which allows you go straight in with your turntable and then out the Record Output to any other amplifier or home theatre receiver of your choice.
