Threadbare Theatre Workshop's production of or, The Whale, an original stage adaptation of Herman Melville's MOBY-DICK, illuminates the great American novel like never before. Through the magic of live storytelling- the company rekindles the rich poetry of Melville's language and the wild way he wished to tell it.
It turns out Melville was steeped in Shakespeare's plays at the time of writing his novel- the influences can be felt throughout; from the depth of his characters to heart-wrenching soliloquies and witty asides. Did Melville secretly wish to write a PLAY himself? Well, Threadbare Theatre Workshop has taken a dive in to find out. After chipping away at the enchanting prism of the play hidden in the fathoms of this hulking novel, we are ready to share an exciting and timeless, local theatrical happening with you. But we need your help.
We are raising $15,000 on Kickstarter to mount the fully realized production of or, The Whale which requires a budget to compensate the entire team involved as well as the resources needed to bring this theatrical re-telling to life. We are committed to paying our actors, designers, crew members, stage managers and director. We must also pay for rehearsal space and the performance venue as well as all scenic, lighting and costume elements.
NEWSFLASH! THIS JUST IN: PortSide NewYork has expressed interest in staging our production on their flagship, the historic and beautiful tanker MARY WHALEN. After a serendipitous meeting with the PortSide NewYork crew and a tour aboard the MARY WHALEN on a sunny afternoon in the Red Hook harbor- our wheels are turning in an auspicious direction. We are so inspired by her, she's magic. We feel as though staging or, The Whale in such an evocative space would elevate and transform the production, and my mind is already off and running in a million directions with the possibilities that a site-specific performance opens up! Our dream of "sailing" or, The Whale into the Brooklyn waterfront may be coming true...
