DR. ORANGE is a 22-page full-color self-contained Halloween-themed psychological horror comic book in which nothing is a given.
Suhaila, a woman with a history of hallucinations she now controls through medication, lives with her wife Chetana in suburban Mississippi. Her wife is a neurosurgeon and rarely home, so she often finds herself alone with her thoughts and her border collie, Rusty. She carves a pumpkin for Halloween, naming it Dr. Orange. Soon afterward, it starts coming after her in her dreams for revenge, and when she awakens things aren't as she left them. Is the threat real or all in her mind? And why does this orange menace take on the persona of a psychotherapist?
In interacting with horror fans, one thing I've noticed is that many want Halloween to be all year long. Our mission is to make this happen by giving you quality self-contained tales of terror!
I wrote the original prose short story in 2011 after carving a jack o'lantern while my wife was in med school and not home. I started thinking about what would happen if one were isolated and already unsure about the nature of reality. Would you start imagining that objects were alive? What about something with a face, like a jack o'lantern?
Last year I completely rewrote the story, then called "The Pumpkin," as DR. ORANGE, a comic book, greatly improving on it and giving it a stronger link to mental health issues. After hooking up with some new and old collaborators, the book was underway at the beginning of 2018. A practicing psychiatrist advised me on the portrayal of schizophrenia.

The webcomic serialization of the story will end just before Halloween but Kickstarter backers can read the ending first in the PDF copy! The print version will take a little bit longer and most likely won't be out by Halloween, but that will depend on how quickly I receive head shots from the drawn-in folks.
You can also check out a preview of the cover and the first four pages below.
Photos of some of the physical rewards are below!

Joseph Duis is the creator, writer, and letterer of Dr. Orange, and the founder, owner, and operator of Heresy Studios. An intelligence analyst by day and a historian by training, he spends 12 months a year wishing it were Halloween, so he formed his own comic book company to write horror comics. He wrote and published standalone horror comics The Order of Dracula, Bless the Children, and Cat & Mouse, and he also contributed a story, "Once Upon a Horn," to the anthology Nerd Nation Presents # 2 (synopses for those comics, all of which are available as part of reward bundles, are below). He lives in the suburbs of Nashville with his patient wife and three impatient toddlers.
Jose Raul Orte Crespo is the line artist for Dr. Orange. Born in Madrid in 1971, he has drawn comics since childhood, and was a professional storyboard artist for French animation. Later he made illustrations for numerous books of terror. As a comic book creator in Spain, he made the trilogy Gabriel, the standalone comic Darkgate, and has collaborated on the anthology Refugees. He has also collaborated on American comics at Insane Comics, Red King Comics, and Good Idea Comics.
Maulana Faris is the interior and cover colorist for Dr. Orange and a comic creator from Indonesia. He wrote and published several works in Indonesia including the comics Kisah Jahi di Sekolah, Kuman Rider, Parade Hantu Galau, Gogogo Boiband, Bisikan, Komik Hadits, and 30 Halaman Mencari Cinta and the novels Catatan Jahil di Sekolah, Kisah Nyesek di Sekolah, Baling Baling Bambu, and Catatan Hantu Jail di Sekolah. He lives in Jakarta.
Greg Woronchak is the cover line artist for Dr. Orange. For over a decade, Greg has illustrated numerous small-press comics including Hellcraft and Dulce, not to mention previous Heresy projects like Bless the Children, the cover of Cat & Mouse, and the story "Once Upon a Horn" in Nerd Nation Presents # 2. He hopes to become famous enough to get one or two pieces of outraged fan mail at his home in Toronto.
We need funding to pay for artist fees (67%), Kickstarter fees (10%), printing (11%), and shipping (12%). If you like our comics and want more, pledge so we can keep making crazy stuff like DR. ORANGE!
