Rite of Passage is a retro point-and-click puzzle-adventure game in the vein of King's Quest, The Black Cauldron, or many other classic Sierra games. Featuring a hint of the rotoscoped animation style of the great Eric Chahi's Out of this World series, and fully hand-drawn pixel art backgrounds.
It's a story about a man losing his way, facing the consequences of his decisions, and discovering who he is in the process.
Search the world for items to carry with you. Use them on your environment, use them on yourself, combine them with your other supplies. Uncover clues and reveal the way forward.
Stranded Sail's plan is to release Rite of Passage episodically, with each episode being sort of like an act in a play... telling a self-contained section of the adventure, but with all the acts coming together to build the complete story. We are seeking funding assistance because the company lost its art lead some time ago, and the cost of developing an animation-heavy game can be steep. It's crucial to our success that we have the means to hire a full-time artist to assist us.
We will release initially on Steam, for PC, and eventually port to Mac and Linux. For those interested in a DRM-free option, we will also offer direct download of each episode upon release. If all goes well, we hope to release the game for mobile platforms shortly thereafter.
We're also looking to schedule a Reddit AMA in the near future, so keep an eye out for that!
- Rite of Passage Episode 1 is in currently in development and roughly 60% complete. We will use this funding to hire an artist to assist us in completing our design. If this goal is met we will be able to complete the full Rite of Passage story with Episodes I and II
- With this level of funding and support we will be able to extend the story with a Rite of Passage sequel in Episode 3.
- At this level we will be able to port Rite of Passage to mobile platforms (Android and iOS).
Risks and challenges
Stranded Sail is a very small team of developers and artists, each with a full time job and family responsibilities. We put as much time and effort into our projects as we're capable of, but we would love to be able to hire some extra help, or even to do this full time.
If we are able to secure the funding and release our first episode, we will be able to extend the story into the proper number of episodes it needs to be fully fleshed out and complete. We really love classic adventure games and we want to share that enjoyment with everyone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
