Mable & The Wood - [LATE] August 2017 Update

Hi everyone,

This update is 1 month late, as I missed it in August. Please accept my apologies for that, it's been a hectic month or so, but it's just about starting to settle down.

I may have been extra hard at work changing nappies and not sleeping, but I’ve also managed to fit in quite a good chunk of work on Mable, so let’s crack on with the update!

I'll be doing another update at the weekend for what I've been working on in August, so this is just what I've done in July!

Caves

The entire cave area is now mapped out and stitched together, including a good number of secret routes. As discussed in the previous update, you can still make your way through the game without killing anyone or anything.

Here’s the least spoilery clip of the caves that I can do:

 -

Parts of the caves are still missing the final art. There'll be some interesting fossils in the rock and there’s meant to be a lava waterfall (lavafall?) in there too. These will be in there to help you orient yourself by providing landmarks, as well as adding some visual variety into the area.

Mini Bosses

I’ve also finished implementing this little fellow:

 -

He still needs a unique death animation, but that’s something that is being saved for the polish stage. If you can find your way to this guy, and beat him (which is a bit easier when you’ve got the different shapes unlocked), then you unlock a permanent upgrade to your health.

So it’s probably worth it…

I also maaaaaybe need to tweak it so he's not as hard to beat, even if he is optional. This is the current room setup:

-

New Death System

Now that you’re exploring a connected world, it made sense to add in a system that broadened the meaning of ‘failure’. When you die, you leave behind an ice statue of yourself that can be shattered to recover the resources that you lost upon death.

It’s basically the corpse run system that you see in the Souls games, although I hasten to add that Mable is not becoming a soulslike. It just fits well with the other systems in the game, and gives you something else to think about when you’re deciding on what to do and where to go next.

New Sound and Music

We have new sound and music! There’s not a lot I can really show you here, but there is a sample of the new music for the Drowned Village area of the game in this here tweet:

Plan For August

Well, August has already happened. So I'll be doing that update at the weekend for you! I'm also hoping to have alpha 2.0 ready by then. I'm just bug checking this week, and it's so far so good.

Sorry again for missing my normal update in August, but I hope you've enjoyed this shorter update and I look forward to showing you some more awesome stuff at the weekend :)

And, as always, thank you for the awesome support you've been giving to me. I say it every month, but I really can't do this without you!

Talk to you again soon,

Andrew

@Shawn Heatherly: it's hard for me to say, because I haven't done enough testing to see how folks cope with it.

It's easy for me! But I play it a lot...

I'm not aiming for retro hard, but I do want some challenge. It'll get tougher than Owlboy for example, but maybe not Hollow Knight. If that makes sense?

      @Scott Brodie: thanks Scott :)

I'm fine with a Souls-like mechanic here, as it's still useful outside that sort of game. That said, how difficult would you say the game overall is? I'm sure there'll be a bonus boss or two that's notably harder, but I'm curious about the average.

The ice statue feature sounds really clever!
