A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We can change the world with our patent pending, fully automatic, no smell, no pest, continuous process compost bin. With AeromatiCo composting doesn't have to be dirty work. You can take pride knowing you are doing something great for the environment.
First off, what is it?
AeromatiCo is the only “plug and play” composting solution for individuals who want a clean and simple way to deal with their food waste. There is no monitoring or turning your compost. Pests are not attracted to your waste and rotting smells are nearly eliminated. The AeromatiCo composter is a fully contained unit that simply requires an electrical outlet and water.
AeromatiCo accepts up to 2L of kitchen scraps per day. It is continuous process, meaning you never need to wait to add more waste or to use your liquid compost. AeromatiCo requires no additives and is energy efficient drawing the equivalent power of a 60 watt light bulb.
How does it work?
AeromatiCo has been engineered to effectively and efficiently harness aerobic decomposition of organic materials creating a micro biome that digests your organic waste.
The system was created by combining technologies from waste water treatment and compost tea brewing. The compost bin includes an air pump that provides the oxygen needed to support the micro organisms that colonize inside the barrel. The force of the air mixes the liquid helping to further decompose the food waste. It is the combination of aeration and agitation that creates the liquid compost. Similar to a refrigerator, the AeromatiCo is a convenience appliance that must remain continuously connected to a power source. There are no additives required. The micro organisms populate over time. We recommend that you introduce waste slowly over the course of the first few weeks to ensure a robust and healthy micro biome.
Simply throw your waste into the unit and allow the patent pending device to rapidly transform it into readily usable liquid compost. The liquid is an excellent soil amendment distributing vital nutrients, beneficial microorganisms, and fine particles of soil anywhere you apply it.
How can it change the world?
It is an ambitious claim, yes, but consider what could happen if 1 out of every 5 households were actively composting… For starters, that would mean less trash bags ending up in our landfills and oceans. Less artificial fertilizer would mean less groundwater contamination.
A significant number of people are not aware that food waste disposal has both economic and environmental impacts. Placing food scraps down a garbage disposal can lead to clogged pipes and expensive plumbing bills (for the individual and municipalities). It also uses excess water and increases demands on waste water treatment plants.
Food waste dumped in standard trash cans can result in leaky, smelly garbage bags that attract insects and rodents. Most importantly, organic waste (currently 25-50% of total waste) in the landfill can take up to a year to decompose and becomes a significant source of methane — a potent greenhouse gas with 20-25 times (a conservative estimate) the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Consequently, landfills account for approximately 20 percent of all methane emissions.
Recovering and recycling food waste diverts organic materials from landfills reducing these emissions and increasing the speed of decomposition. The use of compost improves soil health and structure; increases drought resistance; and reduces the need for supplemental water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
The most environmentally friendly way to dispose of food waste is to compost. Yet, it can be difficult and in today’s convenience culture, many people avoid composting.
The Eco-Blue Container
The industrial design reuses a food safe 55 gallon plastic drum, significantly reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing. We could offer the ability to customize the unit through color and style options, but we love the blue barrel because it is repurposed - not recycled. That means no additional energy or natural resources go into making our barrels, which is a plus for the environment. We get that some folks will want it in a steampunk whisky barrel, but we are counting on our sponsors to understand the value of reusing in lieu of fabricating.
Why should you back this?
Funding our Kickstarter campaign will help us to make the AeromatiCo unit available in households everywhere. Beyond creating an awesome product that we know people will love, we want to raise awareness and help more people compost. Composting returns vital nutrients to depleted soil. Everyone with a lawn and/or garden benefits from compost. Anyone who wants to reduce their carbon footprint can feel good knowing that composting lowers green house gas emissions.
AeromatiCo fills a void in the current compost bin market. There is no other fully automatic, continuous process unit that will deliver readily available nutrient rich liquid compost. Your support enables us to invest in the tooling and manufacturing capabilities to bring this revolutionary product to market. AeromatiCo is seeking to fill the niche of making a composter that is clean and simple.
Our rewards are designed to offer a clean and simple solution to the sustainable practice of composting.
Whether or not you can financially contribute to our campaign, one of the best ways to support us is through social sharing. Please tell your friends about AeromatiCo, like our FB page and share our Kickstarter posts.
We are so committed to doing the right thing for our planet, that we will donate a portion of funds raised to 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses, nonprofits and individuals working together for a healthy planet. 1% for the Planet brings dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving.
A Word from the Creators
We have known each other for 32 years and have been together for almost 10. We met in middle school when I moved to Dan's hometown. After high school, Dan went on to study engineering at GeorgiaTech and I ended up in business consulting. As you might notice in this video, Dan's a little camera shy, but he was a good sport when I asked him to shoot an interview about AeromatiCo. Regardless if you purchase an AeromatiCo, we hope that we have inspired you to start composting.
Risks and challenges
There is a lot of work to be done, and we believe it will take approximately 6 months to make our first shipment. We will keep backers notified with updates along the way. Based on the activities and sourcing of hardware components, we anticipate delivering the kickstarter units in February 2019.
We are currently producing our prototype composters using reclaimed food grade barrels as the receptacles with lids that are thermoformed from ABS plastic. We are manufacturing the lid from a prototype mold with a life span of approximately 200 units. This project will fund the process of refining the lid design (which will consume 3 weeks to complete) and enable us to optimize the per unit manufacturing costs.
Once the final design is complete, the mold will be built along with all the required tooling. All of the other composter components will be sourced focusing on long lead time items. We will finalize the contract for the facility and hire a team to assemble, test, package, and ship the composter.
