35000! Highwayman Revisited! Fallen King! And More!

We reached 35000, releasing the witch!

The debate about the highwayman has been enlightening, we were even contacted by law enforcement and informed of several breaches of proper firearm holding etiquette (!). So despite everyone who lived through the 90s knowing that holding a gun sideways is the coolest way to shoot; we rebuked our concept artist and may have broken a few pencils in front of him to get our point across.

As you can see, there are 3 hand options. The dagger, the 'gangsta', and the proper flint lock. Due to enthusiasm on all 3 options, Mike has kindly agreed to sculpt them all! There may be some assembly required.

Concept art for the Fallen King (once known as the shattered noble) is up for your viewing pleasure (and we don't think he'll come with optional hands, sorry).

Other things we thought we would tell you about.

1. If you wanted extras of just single minis than we are adding the option of you adding $4 to your pledge amount to receive another mini of your choice from the ones available (this offer is for those who have pledged from the $12 level and above). After you have increased your pledge, tell us what extra mini you want and we'll add it to your order.

2. We added an additional painting level. $265 for a full MEGA GOAL painted set ($10 for international shipping). These sets will be painted my Cameron (a professional miniatures painter, who helped train Mike to paint).

As always, we are grateful for your support! We enjoy positive feedback (but we'll take any feedback)! And questions are always welcomed!

@Larry, The magnets I used were labeled as Primal Horizon, but they are the same size as mentioned above. I used a Hobby Hand Drill to drill into the wrist far enough for the connector on the hand and 2 magnets to go into it. Glued one magnet inside the drilled hole, then another one on the end of the connector with the hands.

@James - the Character sheets will be based off of D&D and Pathfinder. We'll have to think about the multiple back stories for each hand. ;)

@Larry, you can pick up Rare Earth Magnets that will do the trick.
You need a pin vice and a steady hand.
You put a tiny hole in each end of the project, the wrist and the hand in this case, and then glue the magnet flat into it. Make sure you get the poles right otherwise you'll be shooting your hand off into the distance. You might have to trim down the project and rebuild with Green Stuff if you can't get a good shallow hole into the the ends.

@Larry, you can pick up Rare Earth Magnets that come in 1/16" diameters, which is usually small enough for all my pinning jobs.
It really depends on how small his wrist and hand end up being, you might have to trim away and rebuild with Green Stuff. I normally just use a pin vice and counter sink a tiny depth into each end of the project, one magnet goes into each tiny hole. and that's it.

    6. Larry Liang on July 14, 2012

@Crutch, can you share what you did with the magnet? I'm having a hard time figuring out how you got that to work in terms of what kind of magnet to get, etc.since it would have to be tiny.

What makess the fallen king "fallen" ?
From the concept art there is nothign to suggest he is having anything more than a bad day.
A broken sword? A battle damaged shield?
It looks like he's just kicked epic amount of a$$.

    10. Crutch on July 14, 2012

Love the Highwayman. I probably will purchase 2. 1 will be set up with the flintlock, and the 2nd one will use magnets to make the different hands interchangeable. I have one that I did that with that works really well...

      on July 14, 2012

So do we get 3 character sheets/back stories for the highwaydwarf? Or does each hand get its own backstory? ;)
Also and I'm sorry if this was answered somewhere else, what system are the sheets based on?

    12. Darsc Zacal on July 14, 2012

I'll agree with the others that a female fighter type is needed for the adventurers. As has been pointed out, nothing else offered so far quite fits that basic role for those playing them.

Female dwarf fighter doing the Captain Morgan pose maybe? Lol

    15. Jackson Starky on July 13, 2012

Tankard on her belt or backpack, then, because I was thinking she should be dual-wielding axes. :-D

    16. ASH LAW on July 13, 2012

Yes, another female dwarf fighter, preferably with a tankard!

    17. Ian Markon on July 13, 2012

That concept art for the Shattered Noble is simply amazing! He is by far my favorite from the concept art, though I still stand by my comments that the Bard looks awesome!

Speaking of the Bard, I know that he seems to be catching a lot of flack, but that doesn't make much sense to me. All of his gear is proper, "period" gear, and, while his pose is very "rocking," he is a DWARF. They should be in a solid "power stance" even when they aren't playing an instrument, let alone when they are playing one. After all, shouldn't he be playing low, dwarven ballads instead of flighty elven-type music?

    18. Jackson Starky on July 13, 2012

Oh, and re: my earlier post elsewhere here about the bard's choice of instrument: The crazed mandolinist is really starting to grow on me; after all, if any non-human race were to listen to heavy metal, it would be dwarves. :-)
Also, a suggestion for a $50,000 Mega Goal (and yes, we might just get there): How about that female fighter suggested by Eva? Just a thought.

    19. Jackson Starky on July 13, 2012

I'll second Eva's request for female dwarf warriors. The Necromancer can suffice in a pinch, but as a warrior, one would then wonder why she doesn't have a shield. :-)

As for the holster on the Highwayman, if Mike sculpts it ambiguously enough (and that should be easy to do, given that we're talking about 25-30mm scale figures here) it will easily pass as a dagger sheath. My question would be, where would he put the hand crossbow? But the hand crossbow is still an awesome idea as well. My personal choices for which ones to use for my own minis would be the dagger and the hand crossbow, but that's just because I tend toward no hand-held guns in my games.

This tendency is being violated by the campaign I have in the works, a Pathfinder pirate campaign. Pirates feel wrong without some sort of primitive personal firearms. As a result, I'd like to suggest a mixed-race pirates set: elves, dwarves, humans, (half-)orcs, and even gnomes, halflings, and goblins. But I'm in no hurry for this; I'd rather see more racial sets (the races just listed, excepting dwarves, obviously) first. Many thanks!

    20. Stonehaven Miniatures 10-time creator on July 13, 2012

Lots of ideas! Sorting through all of it! Wanted to let you all know that we're around and seeing your comments.

Several of these Dwarves have a "Steampunk" feel to them: the Witch - with the modern hair style and meat cleaver weapon, the Mechanist - with the monocle and wind-blown Teddy Roosevelt coiffure, the Bard - with the mandolin poised to rip a riff while he wears a pair of boots Peter Criss of KISS would be proud to wear and now - The Highwayman. But, with the additional hands option now available for the Highwayman (and hopefully with a foldable hand crossbow option soon to follow) all of them can now work in nearly any fantasy realm - be it Pathfinder, D & D or the Steampunk RPG Iron Kingdom. GREAT! I'm still a fan of the multiple hands (with the addition of the hand crossbow to add to the set or to replace the main-gauche because of the holster and lack of scabbard for it) - bases have to be glued onto minis as well, right?

Now, let's get some cards with the artwork and back story added to this project. If it's good enough for Larry Elmore - it's good enough for Stonehaven Miniatures.

      on July 13, 2012

These are lovely. Can we have some more female minis in the later goal levels please? I'd especially love some "regular" female dwarves in heavy armor with axes and hammers. :)

    23. Mitch A. Williams
      on July 13, 2012

Okay, I was waiting but had to go ahead and pledge so I could get in on this conversation. 8^o

No Gangsta' Dwarf please. The flintlock is great. A hand crossbow would work too. And I hate assembling minis. So, if possible, please pick one and roll with it (even if it is the Gangsta').

I guess he* 'cross-draws' with the holster on his right hip and the gun in his left hand? Or will the holster be moved to the left side on the 3d version?

*or She, this one is actually gender neutral. 8^)

    24. Sean L. on July 13, 2012

Love the solution- and the idea of cards as an extra. I do prefer the hand crossbow to the dagger as well. I will be adding a couple extra for multiple highwaydwarfs too...

    25. William Seppeler on July 13, 2012

Holy crap! heard my voice! A Fallen King is in the line up. I can't wait to read the back stories on all these characters. Especially the King!

As for the Highwayman, I'm with Stormfury. I'm happy with choosing one of the three weapons. I'd rather have solid minis as opposed to pieces that could fall off. Although I was being a stickler about modern weapons on these classic Dwarves, I must say I've completely fallen in love with that flint lock. I also agree on the proper hand position when holding a gun. Even if one was going for a gangsta look, the pose is all wrong.

The Highwayman with a flint lock, now THAT is really da bomb! He might be a one off from the rest of the minis, but I LOVE the Steampunk look. really nailed the look of a Steampunk Dwarf mini! Could even make him a time traveler. One heck of a back story that would make. :)

Would anyone else be interested in seeing the awesome artwork of Stonehaven Miniatures concept artist in the form of collectable cards included in the boxed sets? I believe Ral Partha miniatures did this in the '80's with their set of "Silver & Steel" miniatures based on Larry Elmore's artwork. The cards contained an image of the artwork on one side and some writing about the art on the back. For these minis - the concept art on one side (which is beautiful) and a brief history of the character on the reverse would allow all backers to have a concrete version of the artwork on which their minis are based. These cards could be a "Super-Mega-Epic Goal". If cost is prohibitive it could be added as an option for all backers. Just a thought...

Your heighto-centrism does great injustice to my forefathers. Clearly brother robber is a highwaydwarf, and calling him -man is an affront to all dwarfkind. A line will be added to The Great Book of Grudges. Be warned.

I just increased my pledge to $148. In addition to the $140 package, I'd love two extra highwaymen.

    29. D.J. Cole
      on July 13, 2012

From the "law enforcement" individual mentioned earlier: Awesome solution to the Highwayman conundrum! However, as to the crossdraw solution for the holster - if the optional hand with the main-gauche is used, the holster becomes moot. Might I suggest a hand crossbow - with foldable lathes (prods or limbs) instead of the main-gauche. It could then still be used in the holster. Not that I don't love the main-gauche (and just about everything else about all the minis) but since we seem to be looking for "accuracy" in a "fantasy" milieu let's go all the way. I vote for the multiple hands with the crossdraw holster and an additional hand with a hand crossbow and replacement scabbard for the main gauche to replace the newly exchangeable holster. If this happens that'll be three (3) extra Highwaymen I'll be purchasing - and I'm sure I won't be alone. Who would have thought one mini would bring forward such a lengthy discussion. EVERYONE is watching...

    30. Stormfury on July 13, 2012

I LOVE THE KING! As for the Highwayman, i would prefer we vote or you chose one of them so we don't have hands constantly falling off :)

Perhaps some deep gouges on the face of the shIeld where his crest has been scrapped off. Love the broken sword. Maybe you could add some runes to it?

    32. Larry Liang on July 13, 2012

No, please leave the king as is. I love the grizzled look. I don't think missing any of his limbs contributes any more to the fallen theme.

I know it's a bit late to be asking questions about finished art, but I would love to see he king missing an arm. It really adds a broken quality to see a warrior without his shield arm.
Does anyone else think this would be cool?

    34. Nathan Olmstead on July 13, 2012

I think everybody will need to up their pledges to get 3 copies of the highwayman. That way they can have one for each hand option. Awesome work on everything you've done. I can't wait to see how they all look standing next to each other.

    35. Michael Russell on July 13, 2012

Good, I was just about to point that out. I love the flintlock btw, those are my favorite weapons to use IRL followed by black powder muzzle loaded muskets. He is a sexy beast and the mini I have been looking forward to the entire time! Also, that Fallen King looks amazing.

    36. Darsc Zacal on July 13, 2012

I'm loving that fallen King. It looks like there will be a lot of gems in this miniatures set. Very wise decision by Stonehaven in letting us buy dupliicates of individual mini's.

    37. Stonehaven Miniatures 10-time creator on July 13, 2012

More pencils will be broken! We'll tell Mike to slant the holster towards the front.

    38. James P Walker
      on July 13, 2012

Looks cool. Might I point out that he holds the gun left handed but has an empty holster on his right side. It does not appear to be a cross draw.

    39. Larry Liang on July 13, 2012

That fallen king is a proper dwarf veteran fighter. I LOVE IT!!!!

    40. Adam Ridgway on July 13, 2012

      Wow on all fronts!

    41. Cerity "Legendary Bottlejak" Silverhawk on July 13, 2012

I sense a disturbance in the force. Your illustrator likes to sketch kneeling dwarves... which makes them even shorter :D
I always loved playing halfling/dwarf rogue in my tabletop because they could disappear. I like the highwayman for conveying this theme to me.

    42. ASH LAW on July 13, 2012

Brilliant idea that has a solution to the issue that should please all the fans if shooting and stabbing dwarves.

Flintlock FTW.. Something for everyone though. Awesome work.
