After his older brother's murder, a young man has to cope with his pain and anger while looking after his younger brother and family.

My name is Matthew Pickett, film student at Rochester Institute of Technology, and I am the director and the producer of "Restitution."

The film is set in the rural Appalachian Mountains of Virginia during the 1890s. At the beginning of the film, a young man named Roy learns that his older brother, John, has been murdered in a dispute involving another family; however, the local judge rules that John's death was self-defense.

Fueled by a naive sense that he could avenge his brother's murder and out of his feeling of duty to his ailing younger brother and his impoverished family, Roy puts a plan of deception into motion for him and his father to set out for revenge and justice against the unsuspecting family that killed John. When he gets closer and closer to confronting his brother's killer, Roy slowly begins to feel fear and guilt for the now unstoppable showdown that he has set into motion.

The crew for "Restitution" is extremely talented and dedicated. For example, the cinematographer, Adam Ouellette, has shot multiple senior thesis films at RIT, and the gaffer on the film, Ross Neugeboren has worked as a gaffer and an electrician on numerous short and feature films such as "Slash-in-the-Box" and Sinister.

We will also be shooting the production on a RED Epic with anamorphic lenses to achieve a true cinematic feeling.

In addition, our actors will be riding horses, herding cattle, and using real firearms (with blanks) to ensure as much time-period authenticity as possible.

All of this will take place on visually stunning Southwest Virginia farmland that has been owned by local families for generations, some as far back as the mid-1800's.

"Restitution" will be my second large scale film. "The King's River," a documentary about Virginia's Jackson River, was my first major production. The documentary chronicled a fishing rights civil suit between a fisherman and a landowner who argued that a King George II land grant, established before 1776, gave the landowner exclusive access to the river bottom even though Virginia state law says that river bottoms are no longer part of real estate transactions.

"The King's River" was a finalist at the Blue Ridge Film Festival, Official Selection at Forum Int'l Short Film Festival at Fordham Law, and was recently accepted into the Rosebud Film Festival. Also, the Washington Post used footage from "The King's River" in their article about the Jackson River.

I look forward to the production of my new film, and I will strive for even more success; however, in order to make "Restitution" happen, I need your support. Making a period piece with so much art direction, rental of a RED camera with anamorphic lenses, and expenses for everyone involved is very costly, especially for a college student.

Any amount of support that you can offer would be amazing. Please donate today!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

My first student film, "The King's River," that was finished in the Spring of 2012, had many challenges that arose during production. I managed each problem on a case by case basis and as the film has been successfully received at numerous film festivals, I feel that I have a strong track record in dealing with real world issues and finishing what I start.

My main goal for "Restitution" is to be as real and authentic as possible throughout the film. In order to appropriately prepare for the possible issues that may arise during filming, I have been aggressively pre-producing this film since early fall of 2012.

During this pre-production process, I have not only assembled a dedicated and technically gifted crew and spent numerous weeks finding the right locations for the film, but I have also arranged for an armorer with more than 40 years of firearm training experience to oversee all of the firearm handling. In addition, there will be a world-class riding trainer on set to manage all of the horses in the production.

I am throwing my heart and soul into the making of this film, and along with my cast and crew, we will successfully deal with any possible challenges ahead of us.
