About

An Artisan is an independent feature film shooting this summer in Noble, OK.  It is the 5th script written by John Morrison (2011 Nicholl Quarterfinalist, 2011 International Filmmakers Screenwriting Competition Quarterfinalist, 2012 Austin Film Festival 2nd Rounder).  It comes out of personal experiences had by almost the entire cast.  We have most of the equipment needed to get the ball rolling, but we just need a little help to get us across the finish line.

THE STORY

An Artisan is the story of a prophetic man's experiences during a 40 day fast.  Paul, a quirky college senior, has finally decided to embark on a "wilderness fast" to see if his ministry can reach that next step: signs and wonders.  Unfortunately, he doesn't like people as much as he should for someone with the gifts that he has.  That doesn't stop him, though, as he prophecies door-to-door and performs various wonders within the first two weeks of the fast.  He meets a girl who is just as quirky as he is and they discover a bond that seems predestined.  It's a roller coaster of emotions for Paul as he loses 20lbs, falls in love, gets beaten up, heals the sick, disciples a high school senior, tries to reconnect with his father, learns to paint, and leads one of the most powerful prophetic worship services in recent memory.

STYLE

The film will be a doc-style character study: think "Black Swan," "The Wrestler," "Moneyball," etc...

We're going for gritty, real, and raw (and we know in some way those are all synonyms of each other).  The camerawork in the television show "Friday Night LIghts" and in the films of Paul Greengrass ("Bourne Ultimatum," "United 93") will be our model.  I've found that movies tend to take on a different personality when a camera is handheld and close to the actors' faces.

I can't quite say that I have my own style yet because this is my first film, but I do know what I like and I do know what my vision for this film is.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS

Basically, you pledge any amount you want to help make this movie and, if we meet our fundraising goal, you get hip investor rewards and we get to make our movie.  Look over to the right to see the specific rewards.  If we don’t make our goal you aren’t charged a penny, and we'll be forced to max out some credit cards.  Kickstarter is a game-changer.  We’re all in this together now.  Art is not a one-way, supply-and-demand street any longer.  Give our project some serious thought.  If it feels right for you to donate, then donate.  If not, thank you and God bless you anyway.

REASONS WE NEED FINANCING

We will be shooting in some public places (grocery stores, a bar, college campus, etc.) that may require either permits or fees.  Both Matt and I (and pretty much all of our friends) are school teachers, so extra money is hard to come by.

We would like to feed all the extras (and we'll have a LOT of extras), especially during the long-hour days that we'll be shooting the house church scenes.

Registration and copyrighting fees.

Festival entry fees.

Various props.

We've already spent over $2,000 on various pieces of equipment and we've just started!

Also, there are miscellaneous expenses that (3 months out) we're not thinking of at the moment ("deliverables" being one of them).  $5,000 may be way too low to accomplish what we're trying to do, but it will definitely put us in a place better than where we are right now.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Posting the video on Facebook or Twitter would go a long way in helping drive traffic to our project.

Word-of-mouth.  Just telling people about the project will aid in getting it "out there" and we'll need all the help we can get.

Risks and challenges

Several scenes take place outside so weather may be an issue from time to time.

Schedules of the people involved may become an issue as well as we have several scenes that require the attendance of 15+ people (especially the last scene which demands 40+).

This is my first feature, so common mistakes like sound and technical difficulties probably need to be factored in. Although, I am somewhat OCD and I over-plan most things, I still can't predict what will happen on any given day.
