Yes, your man Christian is a cake boy. No, this isn't a Clueless fanzine.
Cakeboy magazine is a queer platform for discussing masculinity, community and identity through fashion, art, design and culture. The stories are political, global, and personal, allowing for complexities and complications, necessitating lots and lots of commas.
The first issue features interviews with performance artist and designer Santiago Venegas and disillusioned dream boat Derek Blair Cooper, as well as a portfolio on neoprene (the new latex!) and a poem by the prolific Max Steele.
Cakeboy 02, currently in production, will feature...
- More content! We're doubling to 64 full-color, perfect-bound pages.
- More collaborators and more features: A travel diary! A comic!
- More exclusive interviews and original photography.
This is more than just a magazine.
Cakeboy allows for multifaceted portraits of contributors and subjects through video, events, and social media. Your support means that there will be more time to create the most engaging stories possible in whatever medium works best. For issue one, the interview with designer and performance artist Santiago Venegas was supplemented by a video (below) and a live reading.
How can you help?
Your contribution will make publishing the second issue of Cakeboy a reality. Printing alone will cost almost $4,500. The additional funds, after fees, will help alleviate the costs of producing the issue, such as film processing and studio rentals.
I'm also updating Cakeboymag.com with original interviews that further the conversation and hope to develop and execute more original videos and host events, and to be able to work with more people on developing features for the site—and pay them for their contributions, as well.
It's just me! For right now. I'm Sean Santiago, a writer and photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. I work full-time as a senior editor at a fast-paced online magazine, and spend my nights/every other waking hour at home, working on this project. It's a labor of love!
Cakeboy 02 will print and ship this fall, in a limited run of 400 copies. It will retail for $12 and be available online at Cakeboymag.com as well as select retailers in NYC. If you or someone you know are interested in stocking Cakeboy, please be in touch!
Thanks again for your support. Be sure to visit us online or on Instagram, and share your support @CakeboyMag/#CakeboyMag!

Risks and challenges
The biggest hurdles for me to overcome as a creative have been fundraising and distribution. I edit and design the magazine and photograph many of the features, all the while balancing a full-time job.
It can be overwhelming.
But I love this project and believe in it.
Cakeboy is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion in all forms, whether that's print, a video, or a live reading. The print edition of Cakeboy allows these stories to take up space in the world in a significant, impactful way. Raising the money and awareness to make this project a reality has been hard, but I'm learning quickly and trying to make this worth everyone's while!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
