About

PITCH

The goal of this film project is to create a high quality short film, 5 minutes in duration, designed around the classic fairytale story. The film's characteristics include ski action in the dark of the night, imagery from winter wonderland in the Canadian Rockies, spooky and sometimes sinister soundtrack, moonlit landscapes and real wolves.

Filming at night provides some unique cinematography. Combining the originality of the night shots with a new take on a classic fairly tale, this should make for a fascinating and pulsating story.

In the story, the viewer will be led to believe that Little Red Riding Hood is being followed by a wolf. We will not be presenting the wolf in bad light however. The idea is to play on the classic story but have a humorous ending.

The slogan 'What are you hungry for?' plays on the idiom 'being hungry as a wolf', and also relates to our hunger for adventure. In the case of Little Red Riding Hood, her hunger for skiing, be it day or night!

THE FUNDS

$2700 -  a fee to film real wolves at Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre in Golden, British Columbia, which would help support their wolf rescue efforts.

$500 - backer rewards

$400 - rental of slow motion camera

THE TIMELINE

The first weekend of filming took place at Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies; Golden, British Columbia and Mt. Norquay, near Banff, Alberta, resulting in the 'teaser' posted on this site.

Two weekends of filming are planned for March 2014 in Banff and Canmore, Alberta. These will include filming of ice features at Grotto canyon (well known for its ice climbs and ice walks), full moon landscapes (the weather allowing), powder ski shots in regular and slow motion in the alpine terrain, and night time lapses.

In April we will be filming in full moon at Rogers Pass, British Columbia. Landscapes, ski shots, introduction and conclusion scenes at a rustic hut in the mountains. Filming wolves at the Northern Lights Wildlife centre will proceed if the fundraiser is successful.

May - June 2014: production time for the movie and the soundtrack.

Entries to film festivals in Aug - Oct 2014.

INSPIRATIONS

This project had a degree of inspiration from other artists, namely drawing on the dark humour of Grickle at

https://www.youtube.com/user/grickle

and the visuals in Salomon Freeski TV's 'A quarter past midnight' ski movie at

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybAohTwB5PA

TECHNOLOGY

We are using Cannon Mark II DSLR camera with 24, 50 and 85 mm Cannon super-speed prime lenses and a Sony FS700 slow motion camera.

Video production is done using Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion and Adobe Photoshop CS6.

DISTRIBUTION

The video will be available in 720p and lower web resolutions on Vimeo and youtube channels free of charge, giving a wide exposure to sponsors' logos and credits. The 1080p high definition version will only be distributed to our supporters on Kickstarter and film festivals.

The 'teaser' video is also available on YouTube at http://youtu.be/5tT5ZarCkfo

Our main goal is to be shown at mountain film festivals around the world.

Risks and challenges

1. Filming fast skiing action in the dark is technically difficult. We work around this by using the available light and terrain in creative ways. We also use super fast prime lenses for filming.

2. Filming at night, in the backcountry, can be demanding on the crew. We use our collective experience to carefully plan outings and assess weather and avalanche conditions.
