Hello, backers! We broke the 2,300 backer milestone and that brings us closer to unlocking the next stretch goal of improved dice. Wonderful!

In this update, we are introducing our building & troop illustrator and showing off one of his illustrations from start to finish. Next update will focus on combat, adventuring and attacking.

Now, I'll turn this over to John Lewis:

Hi everyone! John Lewis here, the illustrator for Lords of the Eastern Reach, and I’ve come out of hiding to introduce myself. I’m responsible for the building and troop illustrations, a few of which you guys have already seen here. In fact, I have a new illustration finished that I’d like to share with you all: the Inn.

Here is the artwork from start to finish:

And here is the final illustration on the card:

The Inn is a fairly expensive card that offers you an additional food bonus, which allows you to expand your army. That isn’t its most important feature though. Inns are the highest-value buildings in the deck and can make a huge difference in your overall score at the end of the game, especially if you have a couple of them.

Like Chris and Scott, I’m an avid board game fan, though my collection doesn’t look like much compared to theirs. We have quite a few boardgamers at Obsidian, so I try to participate in game nights as often as I can.

When Scott came to me a couple years back and asked if I’d be interested in illustrating this card game he and Chris were working on, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. It’s been a long road but it feels amazing that it is actually happening now and I’m so grateful to all of you that have put your trust in us to make a great game. Let’s keep those stretch goals coming! I want to illustrate more cards…

John

Another way of looking at it is that someone has to run the Inn. Maybe it's a retired adventurer who took an arrow in the knee... *hears groans throughout* ...I'll see myself out. :P

In Pillars of Eternity, Inns and Taverns are the same thing. They serve drinks/food to the locals and are inns for travellers. Check out The Black Hound Inn at Gilded Vale or the Goose & Fox at Defiance Bay for examples.

Also, you can only discard or destroy one of your own troop cards. We'll be sure to indicate this either on the card or the card FAQ in the rulebook. Thanks for mentioning it. I can see how it can be construed as any troop card.

As for the reason for the discard/destroy troop, the theme is some troops are too busy drinking at the new inn instead of doing their duty! And from a gameplay aspect, the inn is a big point building so it has a slight negative to build. But as Chris pointed out below, normally an army card doesn't give you any VP's at the end of the game so this is a nice way to convert a card to points.

yeah can you destroy other peoples troops. But more importantly why is an inn related to destroying or discarding troops. If this is related to an in game storyline where there is like an assassination at an inn thats a cool cross over but not having played the game right now an Inn being bad for troops is quite odd to me

Destroy a troop looks like you can destroy ANY..so also an opponent troop.

Also, the card itself has evolved over time. At one point, you placed the troop card under the Inn, and if the Inn was ever destroyed, the troop would come back into play (and probably very mad). We had to take that out since it caused some funky rule complications.

@Dominik: You can discard a troop card from your hand instead of destroying it from play. Also, troops do not provide VPs (unless you have the right quest). Thanks! We like the Inn, too.

      Great artwork, cool card.

So the actual cost of the Inn is its own costs plus the cost of the destroyed troop? And since troops also provide you with VPs the gain in VP is actually not 3 for the Inn. Curious to see how this plays out!
