Bilsborough & Strankalis was formed in 2014 by 2 recently graduated design students - Adam Bilsborough and James Strankalis.
Since setting up a workshop together, we have been experimenting with the use of Bamboo plywood and digital manufacturing techniques, developing a range of products in the process (alongside a full-time Masters Degree!).
About the Construction Lamp
Initially Designed by Adam during his degree, the Construction Lamp was inspired by memories of playing with construction toys as a child and aimed to bring creativity back into adult-life.
We Dont Grow Up - Our Toys Just Get Bigger!
Since setting up Bilsborough & Strankalis we have revisited this early design, and working with a local gallery we have been developing and refining the design and manufacturing process to overcome some early design flaws.
Here are just some of the developments we have been working on:
- Widened Base - The Original kept falling over!
- Lightened Lampshade - we have managed to refine the lampshade design and remove 3 components and reduce the thickness - resulting in a lighter lampshade, which also helped with the stability issues.
- Glue-less assembly - The Original Lamp relied on glueing certain components together, something we have worked hard to remove.
- Wiring - The lamp has been developed so that it can be assembled using a pre-wired light fitting which we are able to source directly from a lighting manufactuer - ensuring the wiring meets regulations.
All of these changes have meant that we are able to offer the Construction Lamp as a Self-Assembly Kit - Allowing the User to construct their own lamp and relive their childhood.
Whats in the Kit?
The Construction Lamp Kit contains everything you need to make your own Lamp - The only tool you need is a screwdriver.
The Lamps are available with a choice of Black or Orange fittings and either Black, Orange or White Cable.
We are planning to officially Launch the Construction Lamp later this year at several Design Shows (Dutch Design Week, Contemporary Craft Festival and The Home & Garden Show) and hopefully in certain Shops and Galleries shortly after.
In order to get to that stage we need to start producing Lamps to demonstrate.
The £800 Kickstarter Goal will help us to meet the initial set-up costs and minimum order quantities needed to get the Lamps into Small-Scale production.
If this Kickstarter Campaign is Successfull we will be working on the following timescale:
Lampshades - 7-day turn-around for the lampshades to be Lasercut
Wiring - 21-day Turnaround for the manufacturer to supply us with the pre-wired fittings
Bamboo Components - 7-day delivery on Materials and 14-day turnaround on machined components
Based on these timescales we should be able to start putting together Kits and assembling Lamps 21-days after funding has cleared. We will then aim to start shipping out 7 days later and then in batches every 7 days until all orders have been completed.
So what do you get by supporting us?
Bottle Openers - made from the waste material that is left from machining the Lamps.
Pendant Light - Made using the same metal shade as our Lamps, these pendant lights can be fitted to a standard ceiling rose. Available with a choice of Orange, White and Black Braided Cable.
Lamp Kit - Receive one of our Construction Lamps in Kit form, ready for you to assemble yourself.
Pre-Assembled Lamp - Not feeling very creative? No worries, we can assemble the lamp for you so that it arrives ready to plug in and use.
Giant Floor-Lamp - Based on the same design as the desk lamp, this giant version will happily sit in the corner of your room and provide a gentle ambient glow.
Due to all of the support so far we have already reached our Original Target of £800, A big Thankyou to everybody who has Pledged to support this project.
Due to the great support we have received from our backers so far, we have been able to look towards expanding this project even further. One of the limitations to this project is the reliance on external manufacturers to produce certain components on our behalf. If we can Raise £5000 we will be able to upgrade our current machining capabilities and produce more of the components in-house, therefore reducing manufacturing costs. With this reduced cost in mind, If we can Achieve £5000 in funding we will include a Free Bottle Opener with every Lamp shipped.
Risks and challenges
As with Every Project there are potential risks and challenges, however we have worked hard to try and reduce these.
Materials - We have atleast 2 suppliers available for all of the materials needed to fulfil all potential orders. If one supplier is unable to deliver for some reason, we have back-ups in place.
Machining - We aim to produce all of the bamboo components in our own workshop, however if we have any issues with this we have several local companies who are available to cut the components at short notice.
We also have 2 companies on stand-by to cut the metal lampshades.
Assembly - We will endeavor to assemble all of the lamps and kits ourself, however we have an extensive network of makers available to help through the University if needed to ensure all orders are dispatched on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
