The Jajamän cork backpack is the perfect bag for the conscious consumer. It's completely vegan and made from sustainable materials: cork exterior, post-consumer polyester interior, and recycled metal buckles. We've found the most planet-friendly option for each detail of our backpack without sacrificing style, durability or everyday practicality.
We're going back
We're going back to a more sustainable way of consuming and producing (and the Jajamän backpack is leading the way). Sustainability is our business, and thanks to your pledges, we will be able to begin producing our planet-friendly cork backpacks. We’ll be able to fund our team to continue to challenge the status quo of fast fashion, by creating truly sustainable alternatives.
A backpack made from cork?
The key difference between Jajamän backpacks and your current backpack is that Jajamän is made from cork. Cork is a sustainable, durable, natural material that grows on trees. It’s cruelty free, unlike leather, and totally natural and biodegradable, unlike the fabric and other materials most other backpacks are made of.
A backpack's just a backpack, right?
Jajamän backpacks are designed to be durable and practical so they can hack life being a backpack. The Jajamän backpacks are the result of a long and careful design process that’s seen different variations and materials put to the test to see which ones proved best suited to the job.
What's so great about cork?
The key material in Jajamän backpacks is cork, something you might only have ever encountered when opening a bottle of wine or champagne. But cork has so much more going for it than pops, bubbles and cheers, so much so that we’ve made a handy list of some of its benefits:
- Natural & Sustainable. Cork comes from harvested tree bark in a process that rejuvenates the cork trees. It has to go through a lamination to become strong and water-repellant, but this has a much lower environmental impact than the alternatives, animal leather and plastic-based faux leather.
- Water & Stain Repellent. Cork is pretty much everything-resistant. Water. Fire. Dirt. Stains. Cork can resist it all. It’s also anti-fungal and hypoallergenic, so it’s suitable for people with asthma and other allergies. And it’s easy to clean which is handy since you’ll probably take it on a fair few adventures.
- Unique pattern. Each piece of cork is unique. No two pieces of cork look the same, so your bag will be unique.
- Light-weight and strong. Cork is lightweight and strong. Ideal for making a bag out of, we would say. The whole backpack weighs less than 3 bananas. It’s a very versatile and durable material that can handle the heavy loads you’re likely to want to carry around with you.
Designed to last
Jajamän can really hack being a backpack (we’ve tested it).You want a backpack that’s going to be with you for the long run (or walk). Because who wants to be throwing away a backpack after a year or so because it couldn’t hack the rigors of daily life in the city or the countryside or even a summer of full-on festivals?
Plenty of skill has gone into engineering the Jajamän backpack, especially the side panel which is really flexible so it folds in for easy storage when the backpack is empty and really expands to give you plenty of room inside when you need to fill it.
Our cork backpacks come in three colours:
JAJAMÄN ETHICS: HANDS-FREE AND GUILT-FREE
We’ve made sure that it’s not just the people who wear our backpacks who benefit, but also everyone and everything affected along the way - the oak trees that are harvested for cork, all the people who help make the bags, and the environment at large.
Finding the most planet-friendly option for each detail of our backpack without compromising function was also a long and careful process. Here’s what won through (drumroll please):
- PRIMARY MATERIAL: Cork. Our beloved cork from Portugal. So strong, so smooth, so durable. We love it and hope you will too.
- CLOSING MECHANISM: 100% YKK zips made from post-consumer plastic. So reliable and recycled.
- INSIDE LINING: Italian quality felt made from recycled polyester. Smooth and strong.
- PUSH BUTTONS: 70% recycled brass. They’re solid and really look the part.
- TAGS AND TRIMS: Recycled paper for easy labelling and stylish finishing.
Designed in Sweden. Made in Portugal.
All Jajamän bags are carefully made in a small factory in the north of Portugal. We’ve chosen to produce in Portugal not just to be close to the source of the cork, but also for collaboration and quality purposes, and to support the manufacturers that operate in secure and safe environments.
Fair wages and good working conditions are standard practices not just at our factory, but throughout Portugal. We like that, and on our many visits to the factory, we’ve worked on the styling of the bags, ensuring our Nordic vision of function combines with Portuguese artisanal production methods to create a unique backpack that meets the highest quality standards.
The Jajamän team aspires to create fashionable, functional products that have a positive impact on people and the planet. We believe sustainability issues don’t have to be serious, they can be fun as well. And that backpacks can do more for the world than just carry stuff around for us so we can be hands-free. They can lead the way in the quest for environmentally friendly bags, and get people doing more fun things. Like in the video we made, where we're walking backwards. Here's a reminder:
If you read this far, chances are you're really into our backpacks, or then you just want to know why the guy is walking backwards. So here's a SPOILER ALERT! The Jajamän backpack is pretty forward thinking, as backpacks go. But sometimes progress involves a bit of going backwards. We’re going back, to a more sustainable way of producing and consuming.
If we could sum up Jajamän in a couple of lines it would go something like this:
DO GOOD. CARRY WITH STYLE.
Actually, it would go exactly like that!
Jajamän cork backpacks are stylish and timeless. A Nordic design made in Portugal for the quiet revolutionaries who want to change things and go about their daily lives with style and ethics.

Meet The Team
The Jajamän team is a multinational team based in Malmo, Sweden. We all share the same passion for sustainable living and ethical production.
With a background in Sociology and Fashion Design, founder Netta aspires to create fashionable, functional products while bringing a positive impact to the people and planet.
Our studio images are taken by photographer Johanna, who is consistent about her Nordic aesthetics. Peter knows about quality and production. He has spent the past 20 years or so travelling around the world keeping track of timelines in order to make production and processes run smoothly. AD Angela loves making sense of the world through her lense, and there is some “Angela magic” to her images. Leonor’s passion is combining analysis with intuition, and she has a double degree in psychology and economics. Viviana is Jajamän personified, and you can see her in many of our images. Apart from modelling and being our ambassador, she also takes care of our social media and PR.
The cork backpack represents Jajamän’s first step in their search for sustainable materials. It’s a big part of their mission to encourage everyone to be more conscious of their consumption and more determined to make meaningful connections, be they with nature, beloved items or people around them.
Here are some quick answers to a few questions you might have.
Q: Is cork leather really vegan?
Q: Will the material really last without cracking?
Q: Will you be able to ship the bags to anywhere in the world?
Q: What’s Swedish for “hell yes, without a doubt?”
Q: Is that the end of the Q&A?
Can't Contribute Right Now? No problem. You can still help...
We understand that supporting us financially might not be possible right now. But you can still do your bit to spread the word about Jajamän across social media or at your next dinner party.
That’s it from us, except to say: if you’re asking yourself can I really help launch a more sustainable backpack that could do its little bit to make the world a better place, there’s only one answer we’d like to give you and it’s:
Risks and challenges
We acknowledge the risk of unexpected delays or complications, but we are committed to getting the best products to our backers on time, and we are confident that we will be able to do that. Between Jajamän’s founder and quality manager, the team has a long collective history in manufacturing, sourcing, purchasing, design, and product development. Our quality manager has two decades of experience in a senior position securing quality production in a major company. This means we know how to handle quality and make sure a timeline is kept to. We have also done our share of prototyping for the past 2 years and now have a nearly final version ready to produce. Before going into production, we plan to make some minor adjustments and make one last prototype to ensure that all details are in place. We are confident that we can manufacture our backpacks from cork and distribute them all over the world (their lightweight nature really helps keep shipping costs down). We just need people to believe in the importance of using backpacks that are as environmentally friendly as a bag can be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
