Mother.F*cker. is an absurdly poetic dance that speaks with a joyfully impolite voice about contemporary motherhood.
Motherhood is the inspiration for Mother.F*cker. Part solo, part community dance-theater project, Mother.F*cker.previewed at the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival in July. Santa Cruz.com hails it "honest...heartfelt...playful...hip."
Mother.F*cker. premieres October 26 and 27, 2012 at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, CA.
Mother.F*cker. is my first evening-length work since Jack was born 4 years ago! I am mining my own story - my own struggle to hang onto my identity as an artist while the rest of my identity is in flux. I am also conducting over 50 interviews with mothers - some old enough to be my mother and some young enough to be my daughter– to explore what this fraught word means while also finding community partners as collaborators.
In the last section of the piece 20 mothers, dancers and non-dancers alike, will join me dancing on stage forming a line and a lineage representing our shared rite of passage. As I build it, the work is transforming from being solely autobiographical into a collection of physical and vocal memoirs.
In partnership with the HeArt Project and Highways Performance Space, I am also working with young mothers at a Los Angeles continuation high school where we are collaboratively making a dance-theater work about motherhood.
From this fieldwork the voice of the piece grows. I am inspired and entrusted with these stories of both hope and desperation. My aim is to channel a mix of Sandra Bernhardt and Pina Bausch - fearlessly shedding light on the absurd and poetic life of a mother.
I am grateful to be collaborating with an amazing team of designers and dancers. What is absolutely paramount is to be able to pay them! This is where you come in!
In order for all of this to happen, we need your help. We need to raise a minimum of $3,000 to cover the artist/designer fees that won’t be covered by box office and other incomes. Please give what you can. Any amount is welcome and valued. Your donation is 100% tax deductible.
I encourage you to consider donating in honor or in memory of a mother figure that has impacted your life: your own mom, grandmother, sister, wife, aunt, or friend. All funds raised from this campaign go directly to the artists and designers. I hope that you chose to invest in our project - allowing for all these mom stories to be heard and seen.
