Mercenaries and Diorama Questions

Dear Backers,

We have been happy with the general reception of the Diorama scene and the general art style. We know it won’t make _everyone_ happy, but we really want to give Flashback a visual identity and art style. Not too comic, not too photo realistic and still inside what Jagged Alliance is all about.

Diorama Questions

One of the often asked question is, if the diorama is representative of a sector. And its not! It is a small visual slice of what you would be able to expect to see on a little more than a single screen. Technically there is no limitation of how large a sector could be. But there are gameplay related limitations of how fun it is to travel 10 minutes from one end to the other on foot.

Another question is, if this is final art and final models etc. It is not - a LOT can change during initial production and design phases. But Jesper and Javier have tried to hit the mood and visual style that is in their heads as close a possible. Remember this is 2 week effort - and its kick ass. So the game might in the end be a little more gritty, less color saturations etc - or it might stick to this initial take. But we don’t want the game to turn into a comic book - and we don’t want to run a bland photo realistic brown shader boring look either.

Last but not least is a question of camera angles and 3d vs 2.5d. At the moment in our heads we run a 3d environment with a fixed rotation and only little zoom. It is what we have in Space Hulk, and it works surprisingly well to not allow for full freedom. The current thought in our heads is to have a similar angle and distance as in JA2 (maybe just a little closer) - and then allow the camera to rotate 90 degrees with a single key press. But this will all be playtested and tweaked yet.

Alllllll righty!!!

We have been through the list of mercenaries now and taken a look at who would qualify for a prequel, and who would be too young or not fit.

So without further delay, here is our current 3 lists. If we forgot someone you really want back (most likely we did), maybe misinterpreted backstories and ages or similar - give us a shout and we will take a second look. The lists are NOT complete through all games - we know that. And we cannot use Wildfire characters due to licensing issues.

Also remember that these are NOT lists of who will appear. These are qualifier lists ONLY. Additionally we have other mercenaries we want to add fresh to the mix.

Sad to see Guntarski is too young to make it, please think about giving him some reference though, i couldnt stand it if no medpacks mysteriously disappeared on me after waiting so long for a new JA!

I totally agree with Kaeroku about Fox. She could be used as a very young mercenary, that has not quite that medic skills, but that she's a very fast learner (like Ira, Vicki or Danny from JA2). Fox has been in all the Jagged Alliance games - just like Ivan. Those two are legendary game characters - in my opinion I guess.

just saw the list, after I wrote an email. stupid me!

But what about... MIKE??????? Or maybe Carl "Reaper" Sheppards?

Maybe some characters from Wildfire could be used, such as

      Rudi Steiger
      Henning van Branitz
      Dr. Laura Colin
      Victor "Monk" Koleshnikov

Just sad, that Raven and Buzz are not involved in JA-F - those are my favorite Mercs.

I hope my eyes are just deceiving me, but where is the patriarch, Gary and Larrys dad? Isn't his name Leon Roachburn?

    6. Claudius33 on May 21, 2013

Perhaps FC has planned a surprise such a Fox RPC taking vacation stuck in the turmoil island :-). Or a Buns RPC doing some training in order to run for a gold medal at the Olympics. In the meantime Lynx is training a recently met young Buzz to improve her marksmanship.

Surely FC has planned new female mercs. What about Igor's mother, a former KGB operative? What about Larry Roachburn mother? Roachburn are a family of mercs, aren't they?

    7. Munly Leong on May 21, 2013

I would probably want to de-emphasize many of the "super mercs" and espec some of the bang for buck outperformers like Buzz and Raven that came in the later games. We've had enough of them. I would rather have a good reason to pick mercs that are usually less popular this time around. Looking forward to seeing Bernie, Larry Roachburn and others in their prime and don't forget to throw in some new characters. You could have some backstories with credible reasons why they would not have joined up with AIM afterwards, retirement, change of lifestyle etc, or had motivations or recklessness that would cause them to most likely get killed or disgraced in a conceivable canon like fashion.

This can get them up for JA3 where it might be nice to meet some retired ex AIM guys come in for one last sortie or guest mission etc. Could see Vinnie retired into the sports betting arena, Vicki with a custom car shop etc.

Another benefit with emphasising less popular mercs is that you can come in with newer voice actor interpretations while fans would be much more picky with stalwarts that they know well like Magic, Raven etc.

      Re: Fox

Fox was a doc with marginal medic skills in JA1. Her youthful enthusiasm (and looks) earned her reputation. I could see her fitting in as a Peace Corp. volunteer on the island, maybe interning to complete her fellowship for med school? In any case, she could fit in, if you wanted to play with her backstory a bit.

Nice thing about prior JA installations is that while they have backstories, they are fairly minimalistic, leaving a lot of room for additions and interpretations if you want to go there.

Also, I believe Fox is one of the core players in the series. The "foxy lady" archetype was very nicely sated with her early on, and as a late teen / early bloomer, seeing her childhood med-school turn her into a hardened Merc could make for some very interesting gameplay / story.

      Just my $0.02

I think the big thing for JA was not so much individual Mercs by the relationships between them.
In JA2 I don't think I'd have been as interested in Lynx without Buzz in the game and vice versa. Same for Fox and Wolf or Raider and Raven or Igor and Ivan.

I'd like to see the character decisions made by trying to build a network of personalities and relationships and including people based on how well they influence that web.

Except Scope, she should be included without question. I love Jon's idea that she could be inserted someplace training gurillias supporting whichever side the British favour, that could have some good story.

    11. Missing avatar

      jon on May 19, 2013

Regarding scope, given that her skill is teaching, and given that the british military do sometimes provide training for the side they favour in a conflict they are not directly involved with, I could see a possibility for her to appear in that role, possibly as part of some covert team of specialists

Come on, just bring them back, I don't care about if they are too young.

    18. Gomisan on May 18, 2013

It's cool to hear everyone's favorite characters. Personally, mine are Grunty and Bull. "You gotta pay more to get more!!"

To be honest, I'm very cool with about a 70/30 split between classic characters and completely new mercs. I think part of the fun will be interacting with some new mercs.

I agree with the idea of building the initial team out of a pretty small pool of possible mercs (e.g., your CIA handler gives you of few dossiers and a briefcase of money and says, pick you team) and then encountering our old friends though the course of game play and island exploration. It would also open up possibilities for side quests, in other words, you find Malice working at a bar and he explains his predicament and if you solve his side quest he joins you.

    20. Wenxiox on May 18, 2013

Grizzly, Wolf and Len, those are the ones I would like to see back most. I am pleased to see Len in there, although his age might take its toll...

    21. Rutkowski on May 18, 2013

Snake Edwards. Also, Ice should fit, he isn't that young(probably 30-ish or late 20's at least in JA1).

Bring back Skitz! He seems to have a reasonably long (if spotty) history with AIM.

Mitch's recruitment story might be interesting. He could fit easily.

Speck seems a little young, but he could still be useful in his early days as a "whiz kid". I always thought of him as a ground-floor member of AIM. Plus he's my favorite mechanic.

Hyrax is right: Ice is a "longtime member". Don't disrespect the Ice.

Sadly, Tex is listed as a "new member", but that doesn't mean he couldn't be around for some reason ... I'd rather see the story stretched a bit to accommodate him :) My all-time favorite merc. But I'll understand if he's left out.

Fox is clearly a series favorite, and I love her too. Her bio doesn't seem to indicate any reason for her to be inactive during the Cold War.

No Malice? Why? Malice is great, he's been hurting people for a long time, he looks old, he can be there. Come onnnnn. Please?

Leech is another great character I've always enjoyed *because* of his limitations. No reason he can't be there.

Scope is a fun character; she's so straitlaced. Would be neat to see her in JA:F. But she's not a dealbreaker for me.

And, just in case you can't implement all the characters on the "qualify" list, I was very glad to see these in particular: Gus, Grunty, Hitman, Dr. Q, Sidney, Lynx, Needle, Gary, Smoke, Doc, Bud, Larry, Reuban, Pops.

While I can understand why Igor isn't in the list (due to age) it was mentioned in the Reddit IAmA:

"3) The i-team definitely is back. They are some of our favorites and one of the reasons we wanted to bring in the Red Army as part of the story in such a prominent way."

So with that in mind, what does that actually mean? Is it a 180 on that decision or are we getting a replacement to join Igor as the I-team? :)

I don't know about all the extended universe stuff, but from the description in JA2 i don't think Barry Unger should be in a prequal to JA (as much as I love him) specifically that it states (in 2): "Unger is part of a new breed of explosive experts"... new.. his training probably wouldn't be considered "new" if occurred in the 80's etc.

    40. Louis Rompré on May 18, 2013

It pains me to see Malice on the "not" list. He has a background as a bouncer, why not put him as a recruitable bouncer in a bar? He could work there on this remote island hiding from the mob or escaping the tax collector or unpaid tickets...suits the character ;) I think age is irrelevant in his case also.

    41. Hyrax on May 18, 2013

Seems there is some confusion on the list:

Dr. Daniel "Danny" Quinten - is on both lists - maybe and do not qualify. He should be on the latter only.

Ice Williams - has in his bio that he is a longtime member (In JA already). I think he looks younger than he is, so he should still be a member.

Ron "Raider" Higgens and Charlene "Raven" Higgens - they should be in the NO list, because their background is police and Raven seems to young to be in JA:F.

Maj. Spike Scallion - should be included.

Thor Kaufman - this character is NOT canonical.

John "Bull" Peters, Dr. Donna "Spider" Houston, Dr. Q Huaong, Norma "Meltdown" Jessop - These characters seem to young to be included.

Peter "Wolf" Sanderson - I think 4 years would squeeze this guy in barely.

Sheila "Scope" Sterling - Served in another organization at that time. I wouldn't personally include her.

Willy "Weasel" Augustin - Has been in the organization for over 5 years (JA bio), Should be included.

Howard "Carp" Melfield - Is also a longtime member.

and this like 5 minutes of analyzing, so there is more characters to go over.

I would recommend taking a different approach to this merc selection:

      First find who is canonical
Second the most popular from later and if there is a way to bring them back list
Third all the others who can be added but are not very popular but still interesting
Fourth decide on how many mercs are going to be in the game
Fifth add new members (MAYBE remove some who don't seem to be important to be included, can figure it out on with fans)

    42. manio on May 18, 2013

Boy Ivan is in! Best merc ever :)

"If I work with your team, I whip other members into shape DAMN QUICK."

      And I will certainly miss:
"My skin is punctured and leaking!"

    44. Ernan O Donnell on May 18, 2013

I guess half my line up won't make it, Keith, MD and Igor. That being said I totally understand why. This is the 80's, JA2 took place in the late 90's. The 80's is a brilliant setting and gives access to great period weaponry and new characters along with funny references to pop culture/movies.

    45. JayM on May 18, 2013

Is Ice really too young? :S too bad, he was one of my favourite mercs I always used to hire...

    46. Teatermenneske on May 18, 2013

Also, it would be interseting if Ivan is included in the game, because he would have been a loyal Soviet officer in the eighties.

He only joined A.I.M. after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.

    47. Teatermenneske on May 18, 2013

For some reason I have always loved Larry Roachburn.

I am not sure if his brother, Gary Roachburn, will qualify, though. In the first game he was listed as a "new member of A.I.M."

Should we expect to see the legendary Leon Roachburn? I get the impression that he and Samuel Garver have been in A.I.M. seemingly forever.

Oh, and it will be good to see "Unusually Ruthless" Reuban again.

    49. Dan Verständig on May 18, 2013

@FC I didn't consider that Fox would be too young - but I got your point and completely understand that Yes, the story of that book is settled some years after the foundation of A.I.M.
      @Nakano You're right, it's considered as non-canon, anyway kind of a good story. :)

I'm pretty sure that exploring new characters (no matter what gender) will also be a nice experience. I really enjoyed the connections between characters, their backgrounds and relations. So it would be nice, if such a feature would be kept in the hopefully upcoming game!
